Wow, the commentary on this is so incredibly well observed. I have a masters in screenwriting and have watched this film multiple times (it being one of my favourite films for many years)- even so there were points made that had never occurred to me previously. Very insightful, really interesting, great job!
I watched the Joker film first. There is so much carry-over from this film to that one in terms of physicality. Joaquin really accentuates his angularness to represent social and psychological discord/ostracization in both movies. It seems like this film has quite a bit more depth to it, and it makes The Joker feel like a caricature of Freddie. And that's incredible because The Joker is a pretty good movie.
I really cant get behind Joker. Like at all. No disrespect to those who enjoy it, but the dialogue really betrays Joaquins talent. It sounds like something a 14 year old would write.
The backdrop of the film is a fictional portrayal of L Ron Hubbard and Dianetics. Dianetics concerns itself with the practitioner's ability to free oneself from their emotional reactive mind (think Stoicism and Buddhism). As Lancaster Dodd (Hubbard) is developing this paradigm he invites Freddie into his life. Ironically Freddie runs purely on emotions. He is lecherous, a drunk and has has a temper. As their relationship develop not only does Lancaster have difficulty in adhering to Dianetic principles Freddie becomes an extension of them. When Lancaster gets angry at the reporter, Freddie beats him up. When Lancaster is arrested by the police, Freddie fights with them. As Lancaster's value system evolves he finally realizes his relationship with Freddie is in total contradiction to it and sends him packing. Beautiful film.
So should every movie have likeable characters. Look at series like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul very successful series with unlikeable characters.

I found the arguments presented & the visual examples quite good. I'm guessing you're referring to his tone of voice when saying he could put Burn to sleep. But I actually find it quite soothing. The fake "energic" delivery that those crazy youtubers use is definitely more annoying
The Master is PTA's masterpiece from me, and Joaquin's best performance to date.
AMEN.
For every PTA movie, there is someone saying it's his masterpiece. And I kinda have to agree with them 😄
I must agree.

Freddy was in the Navy…..not the Army
@@NoNameNo.5im sure he realised that he just misspoke
As good as joker was, i feel like Phoenix winning the oscar for that was just a popularity contest. He shoudv won it for this role.

I wrote a paper on The Master my sophomore year off college, still my favorite paper I’ve ever written.
The Master: Learning to Feel
One of my top 5 films ever.

Beautiful film.
He doesn’t send him packing, Joaquin flees
this is his masterpiece
Nice analysis, I’m interested in seeing more of your work
You should read the book he wrote on Anderson called Masterworks its great
Masterful.
Fredie sees his father in the master. Thats why he attacks that guy who he photographed. Him and the master look like eachethor
Nice work 👍
nice video
Well there were more scenes in the movie that should have analyzed.
The problem with this movie is that the 3 main characters are very unlikable people

Very Mediocre Movie
This review and some of the comments are as nonsensical as the books in the film.
Then why don't you enlighten us with your genius?

Adam nayman is pretty annoying

"its a kind of" "its a sort of" mate how many times do you have to say that it's so annoying
This is probably the worst video I've ever seen on this movie. You could put Ken burns to sleep
Yeah hes not going crazy enough like these young youtubers out is he
