  • The next "Aces" video.
I'm flying an F4U-1a against a KI-61-Ic "Tony" set to Ace skill level. Unlike the "Zero", the "Tony" has self sealing fuel tanks and armor protection for the pilot. While not quite as maneuverable as the Zero, it is faster.

Notice how the reflector glass takes on a prominent yellow splotchiness when your plane goes inverted? This phenomenon of the gunsight reflector texture being most apparent when the Sun is shining from underneath (as though the floor/hull is transparent) is a consequence of one or more factors nit fully appreciated by the creator of the sight. In some cases the sight glass goes quite 'milky' and hazy, significantly reducing contrast. Some windscreens suffer similarly, too.
The opacity of the texture, its Ambient and Diffuse values in the texture's .mat file and the orientation of the model's surface normals play a role.
In my mods to sights and for my new creations I take such factors into consuderation. Then there's no unrealistic enhancement of the glass that could occur only if the Sun could shine upward through the floor. ;)
Furthermore, I do add a new element where aporopriate. And that is a reflection of the collimating lens. It dynamically varies in intensity as the angle of the Sunlight changes, being strongest when the Sun shines straight down, directly on the lens.
