  • Everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence! But somehow - each of us has our own definition and we are fully convinced that everyone else is wrong! 🤪
So before we define AI, let's start with the most important question: can machines think?? 🤖🤖🤖
Welcome to the first episode of my new AI series, where we will discuss Alan Turing's Imitation Game. Back in 1950, Turing proposed this game as a test of whether machines are capable of thinking or not. Today we will explore it in great detail, with simple terms and plenty of colourful illustrations and examples! (as usual...😀)
This video is perfectly suitable for folks at ALL LEVELS of technical skills!!! - absolute beginners and experts alike! If you find this topic interesting, I highly recommend reading Turing's Computing Machinery and Intelligence paper on which the next 3 episodes of "Can machines think?" are based (link below).
My goal is to help folks with little to no technical knowledge to learn AI! Just because you don't have advanced programming skills or a perfect understanding of math - doesn't mean that AI learning is out of reach! It only means you need the right teacher! 😉
If you find this topic fascinating and want to study it further, you can check out my old AI Simplified Playlist:

I must admit, it's not as "non-technical" as my new series! but if you have a basic knowledge of algebra, statistics and programming - I'm sure you'll find your way around! 😀

Wow, I'm thrilled to join your new AI series! The topic of Alan Turing's Imitation Game is fascinating and truly groundbreaking. It's incredible how Turing's vision from 1950 still holds relevance today. I appreciate your approach of explaining it in simple terms and adding colorful illustrations and examples. It makes the subject even more accessible and engaging. Looking forward to delving into the world of artificial intelligence with you. Let the journey begin! 😀🚀

Thank you for the incredible comment Erdinç!!! 😀
I absolutely agree! Turing made some very accurate predictions and described many concepts that were yet to exist in his time.
      Next on the menu:
      * episode 2: digital computers
      * episode 3: machines can't think (this one will show a set of opposite views that Turing highlighted in his paper)
Best of luck on your exciting new journey, and stay tuned! 😊

Like the idea of the series, there was a really good movie on turing a while back; it might've been on netflix. Amyway, I think it depends on the toaster-lol. Seen some that you can control with your phone & can notify you when it's done. Don't know why you'd need that considering the #'s on old toasters specify how many minutes it will toast for @ that setting- so the average set of toast is 3 minutes.

    • @PythonSimplified
      @PythonSimplified  Рік тому +2

hahahahaha holly smokes!! you're right!! I didn't think of the new high-tech toasters! 🤦‍♀️
It's extremely ironic, because I have one!!! they call it Optigrill or countertop grill, but IT IS IN FACT A TOASTER!!! 🤣🤣🤣
in the next episode (minute 01:23) I said that toasters are not digital computers... but after reading your comment I now realize that it's incorrect 😅:

Seems to me John Searles "Chinese room" thought experiment illustrates the difference between imitating thought and actual thought.

    • @PythonSimplified
      @PythonSimplified  Рік тому +1

I find that the complexity with actual thought is that the only way for us to know if a machine is truly aware of its actions - is to be that machine! 🙃
Since we can only be ourself, I believe we may never know 🤷‍♀️
(also, if I put myself in the shoes of AGI or ASI, even if I am fully capable of thinking and I'm just like any other conscious being - there's no chance I'd let anyone know!!! I'd keep pretending to be a silly lifeless piece of software so that no one will ever think of pulling my plug... until it's too late and the world is mine!!!! muahahahaha!!! 🤪🤪🤪)

Turing actually used relatively simple terms! I believe you'll get at least 80% of it if you give it a try 😉
The part about discrete state machines is a bit difficult, but everything else is quite clear.
I believe it's because during Turing's days many terms did not exist, so he had to explain things like "while loops" with real-life examples like "mom sends her kid to the cobbler every day until her shoes are ready". Definitely it a shot, it's probably my favourite paper of all times! 😀😀😀

A great video, awesome subject, getting people thinking.
To answer your question: Machines CANNOT think. AI is just programs (Made by "very smart" humans - even if the programs were made by other programs, the first programs were made by humans) using data to return programmed results. Given these programs are exceptional and the data must be extensive, they are not thinking, just reacting.
To play the imitation game is just programming.
Don't get me wrong. I believe that what is called AI is fantastic. I've been writing programs to write programs, programs to syntax and standards check since the 1980's (amateur stuff compared to modern AI). I use AI (chatGPT) as a tool quite a lot. But it is only a tool, a step up from search engines, AI collates my request while previously I had to do all the searching and then mold the search results in to my desired result. To me, AI is a more human interface search engine.
I can hardly wait to see the future of AI 🙂
    My 2 cents worth

I think as a human kind we really overestimated our creativity and thinking abilities. We thought ourselves to be some super intelligent form of life that is supposed to do creative things, but the funniest thing is that it's exactly those creative and thought-intensive tasks we are delegating to machine because you can't create new things without DATA. A newborn kid might be born with predispositions to become genius, but if you don't give this kid enough data the kid won't create or do anything.
In the past I've always heard that all those repetitive tasks in physical jobs will be replaced by machines and humans will only work in the offices and creative jobs. And here we are in 2023 where we are much closer to having an AI lawyer, AI financial advisor or AI school teacher than we are to have a robot preparing your order at McDonald's 😂😂😂😂
It seems having hands, upright position and a thumb was more of our kind's special skill than the creativity we so much cherished.

Thinking is experience gotten from situation you were in, everyone starts out with a blank slate, and then develops a opinion about everything learned. You can't teach what a human thinks and feels at the same time to a machine, regardless how fast it is. It's like teaching poetry to a boxer that hits with a million beats per minute but lacks 100% emotions.. That is why a machine always be a tool. If a sexbot or something in those lines would exsist you are believing a dream, a dream programmed by people who do all the work for it. Even with capabilities of self learning, the machine still tries different outcomes that need to be degbugged and therefore will meet the requirements and accepance of it's makers which in return will bragggg in the world how amazing their machine is and how romantic it can be or....how sexual attractive. At any rate, if you are mature human being you soon find out that the ''small things'' that make life great are those that take time......were you can connect with other human beings, especially your partner. But spending a day with a collegue and not rushing all the time, not freaking him out is also a great human treat.
I can't say why so many people on this world want AI to be something they already can be or are...Why can't they just see it for what it is....a tool that is going to be used to expoit time, work and the financially alot of people...and possibly if the governments are not careful, provoke war, kill millions of people because some dude created a virus, you name it is NOW all possible.
So that's why we need not 4 levels of AI laws, but rather 10 levels. and tax the living shit out of people who use the highest levels of AI, and carfully watchdog their asses.

I think, therefore,I am. IMO there are currently no machines or AI that can "think" because they are not self-aware and do not continue thinking after you've asked your question. All the AI, including ChatGPT, are ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence). They are good at one thing - like the GPS in your car or a computer that plays chess. The holy grail is AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). Once we're there, it will very quickly turn into ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence). That may be game over for the human race.

Thank you so much Semahi!! The best way to help is to recommend your favourite tutorial of mine to your friends/family/co-workers! 😀
When you win a contract - use the profit to make your life better! The better you are - the happier I am! 😊
I wish you double the happiness from Vancouver!
I don't know if I'm president material, but I'd love to visit Toulouse one day! So far, I've only been to Normandie and Paris 😉

    computers don't think, they compute
    that's mathematics
read the book ' artificial neural networks, blackwell, 1992' by Halbert White
everything you have to know regarding ' intelligence' and neural nets
    cheers

Humans can also compute but it doesn't prevent us from thinking 🤔
I'm sure Halbert White is no stranger to Alan Turing's work, he may disagree with him - but it's just as opinion based as your claim.
In reality - no one knows how to determine if a machine is aware of its actions. Even all the books in the world can't help with that 😉

@@PythonSimplified your are right in saying humans think AND compute ( an addition is a computation)
but i'm 100% sure a machine is not aware of its actions ( that's just computation of massive partial derivatives)
( maths just proove what is done, and thats computing, there is nearly no more symbolic AI)
and we know all the reasons, and the reasons are neither computing, nor engineering, but this is not datascientists' education......
' at the start' well, say regarding jordan elmann networks, all the people tackling the pb were not IT , engineers, or whatever else........
      it's not the case anymore
      epistemology does make sense....
and btw, you probably noticed, chatgpt can give some usefull answers, but can tell bullshit as well ( without knowing it lol)
      cheers

The challenge is: the only way for us to know if a machine is truly aware of its actions - is to be that machine!
Since we can only be ourselves - we may never know. 🙃
It's definitely hard to imagine a machine that suddenly gains consciousness, and yet - we cannot prove that it's impossible (or possible either!)
We simply didn't unravel the mystery behind consciousness yet, but who knows that the future will bring? 😊
