Lyrics:
The sound is on the visions move
The image dance starts once again
They shuffle with a bovine grace and glide in syncopation
Just living lines from books we've read
With atmospheres of days gone by
With paper smiles
The screenplay calls a message for the nation
And those who sneer will fade and die
And those who laugh will surely fall
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall
The thin wall
Thin wall
Grey men who speak of victory
Shed light upon their stolen life
They drive by night and act as if they're moved by unheard music
To step in time and play the part
With velvet voices smooth and cold
Their power games a game no more
And long the chance to use it
And those who dance will spin and turn
And those who wait will wait no more
And those talk will hear the word
And those who sneer will fade and die
And those who laugh will surely fall
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall
The thin wall
Thin wall
The thin wall
The thin wall
The thin wall
And those who dance
The thin wall
And those who talk
The thin wall
And those who sneer
The thin wall
And those who laugh
The thin wall
And those who know
The thin wall
And those who dance
The thin wall
And those who wait
The thin wall
And those who talk

That rapid, staccato bass mixed with the synths and guitar riffs.... perfection.
A truly underrated track.
you understand the magic. it was all NEW for us back then :)
I am 13 and I am ashamed that my generation does not like music like this. I believe that songs before 2000 were legendary
I wouldn't worry too much. If you think about it, kids from the early 1980s really didn't think much of music from the 1940s. Its the natural progression of time and this song is literally 42 years old now in 2023. And In 1981 I wasn't listening to music from 1939 that's for sure. I know it's not exactly the same, but I think you see what I mean
Im also 13 and I love this kind of music 2. DuranDuran and Ultravox all the way for me
yes it was and is among the greatest sound since i was young ,thats a while ago now 55
Am a mainly studio based artist .who does remixes and also his own music lve been a fan of ultravox since I was about 11 years old
So why isn’t there more going to there concerts It’s crying out for younger fan
The music the fashion the videos the 80’s were a defining decade of outstanding music. So fortunate to grow up in those great times.
I love Ultravox, all that early eighties synth was so good!
To live my teenage years in the 80s is a relief. Imagine having to grow up with the dross that passes for music now. Humans have forgotten how to be creative and melodic.
Car drove past me today , two young cocks vaping , driving like tools and listen to music with lyrics saying , something like ‘ this Ni££a is gonna smack up one million dollars Bit££ ‘
I had to laugh 😆
I'm of that era, and mostly agree. But, there is some excellent music around now. You just won't find it on what passes for radio these days, where DJs are extinct and playlists rule. Search UA-cam for The Warning for a start, if you're into real rock music.
dross is the new norm, especially if it is Korean dross. i try to snap my daughter out of it but it bombards every part of kids lives now. i'll continue the fight to promote pre 90's music
I often get feelings of atmospheres of days gone by.
Me too
Yes I know exactly what you mean
That"s happen to me when I go to a smaller town then mine
Hard to believe those days are just mere memories now.
It was an amazing time. I miss those days immensely 😢
Still sounds great in 2023 timeless
Ultravox are the best..!
This genre are unic.
Only a few group in the 80's was able to do this.
Alphaville..
A flock of seagulls..
Talking heads..
Simple minds..
and others that now I don't remember..
Every single note is like a shard of ice stabbing me. I love it.
Amazing how they managed to come up with such a great follow-up to Vienna. You'd think that would be almost impossible.
@@ajs41 Agree, they just kept bringing out so many great singles. All Stood Still too sounds as fresh as ever. It was a good time!
My best years. This video was so nightmarish and surrealist
Bluey G hit the nail on the head👍
THEY PRODUCED & DIRECTED ALL THEIR VIDEO'S AS WELL AS DOING ALL THE MUSIC TOO ! ! !👍
Favourite track from the Ure era. No MIDI back in those days just analogue synths and spliced up tapes.Pioneers.
While it is true that MIDI Wasn't standardized until 1983. We still used a variety of "sync boxes" That used a pulse to keep certain keyboards and Linn drums, etc in sync with each other. Ultravox was Definitely pioneers and trailblazers for all of us who were yet to be signed. By 1983, MIDI exploded and the sky was the limit. Fun times.
@@beauthegreatandpowerful9320 can I ask which band you were in...? Or bands. That time of the early days of electronic pop music is really dear to me and I'm always interested in anyone I may have inadvertently missed in the avalanche of music and bands, a lot of them genuinely good back then, but sometimes there's only so much can fit in a school kids brain :)
@@beauthegreatandpowerful9320 I'm guessing that's the drum machine's trigger out to a synth trigger in with the note pitches played manually on the synth keyboard...
I wish I had the opportunity to see these when I was younger 😔
For me Ultravox and Depeche Mode are the best synthbands of the 80's
I agree on Ultravox. If it wasnt for me having been stationed on Scotland with the USN, I never would have heard of Ultravox.
I think you,d also have to chuck Japan in there as well.
@@theskippy7
🤣 um NO.
@Neil Bentley agreed, but all are topped by New Order. Deny that
@@thisIDsUnavailable New Order ist great, but i liked Joy Division more than New Order.
My favourite band of the 80's
One of the best early bands of the 80's that I started my musical journey with. Lots to pick up watching the video that you wouldn't have got back then but you understand better now.
we need more clubs playing good dance tunes like this -.-
Come to my club in LA
Hell yeah !
IM IN
The Castle in Tampa
Midge Ure, Ultravox and Visage 👍.
When music videos were great and had a story to it
The first REAL music video! Absolutely innovative and genius and the idea of the "elastic" floor and walls was copied so many times! Ultravox ROCKS!
One of the best songs around, been listening to this for 40 years and I STILL LOVE THIS, just one of the best!!
Messianic. My fourth favourite Ultravox song after Hymn, One Small Day and All Stood Still.
An absolute belter of a track! That staccato bassline had me hooked when I first heard this as a kid. Love it!
The words resonate with me somehow
It was this very Song that got me really interested in Synthesizers and in Ultravox!.
I can clearly remember me goin to visit my step Gran and Grandpa.During the visit,I heard one of there younger sons listening to some music in his room.I immediatley thought, what is that music, sounds brilliant,so i went and asked him,he said "it`s Ultravox",i`d never heard of them,he was playing his Bass Guitar along to The Thin Wall.
He also had a piano in his room,,i`d never ever hit a key on a piano,i was curious,so i asked him if i could try it out,if i could try and play along to it.
So,he played The Thin Wall again and i tried to play along,i did`nt do bad for my first time ever, the piano was a wee bit out of tune though. 🤣
Since that moment,i became BIG Ultravox Fan and a BIG Synthesizer Fan!. 🎹 🎵 🎶 😁
RIP Chris Cross
This has been said over and over, but SERIOUSLY, where is my time machine back home to the 80'S?! I've been waiting forever! 🤔😎🤔😎🤔...I'm an 80'S girl, stuck in a modern world!...Make that a song or stick it on the back of a Jean Jacket. 😋...MAKE it like a "choose life" or "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt. 😜
That would be really nice to go home to the 1980s and just live there for the rest of my life
2021- Still listening, Timeless artistry
LOVE this song!
And Im guessing the basic concept for the video was Warren, Billy, and Chris saying "Let's torture Midge!"
This song makes me think of the scrap trains especially the wagons of these trains
Love the drum beat, Warren Cann was truly the man-machine. Also, Midge's voice was so strong. How could he sing that last refrain in one breath?
Dude has insane lung capacity
Right? Is he part sea mammal?!?!?
The whales are restless. 😂
A lot of U-Vox stuff had a hard edged beat ..then and intelligent melody with thoughtful lyrics ...super Underrated..I think midge use was extraordinarily talented like his bandmates breaking new ground particularly with Videos as everyone in music knows that Vienna video was the blueprint of modern music videos ...this band at the top of their game were waaaay ahead of their competitors..
MUSIC IS THE ONLY TIME MACHINE ❤
I love Ultravox their videos are like nothing else
I get a synthgasm every time i listen to this
I was a Mod for a few years by the time this came out, but did appreciate great tunes from elsewhere. I bought this at The Hampshire Centre, now Castlepoint in Bournemouth. My mates Paul and Gary were Ultravox fans and this reminds me of the Summer of '81, when I turned 14. A good Summer, with Paul, Gary and Med. Whenever I hear this..
Very cool, I was born in the Summer of 81! All the best.
MY ULTIMATE FAVE ULTRAVOX!! love both the different visions for this band , that
Jon Foxx & Midge Ure
had. Some members also formed Visage , a more dance pop, type vibe ,with a dark echo.
Billy Currie was the only member to be in all three...He's a musical genius, one of the VERY few classical musicians able to create an original voice in rock.
I love visage
Love Billy Currie! I agree.
2023 still listening ❤
What a gem, ultravox is awesome. Only born in 1984 but Midge and Paul Young my 2 favourites. Midge is a musical genius humble brilliant gorgeous
I agree... 👍😉
Always thought that a lot of Ultravox's videos were about WW2 and the mystique surrounding it. Films like "The Third Man" come to mind.
It's amazing you feel like that....I'm.a Memaw...(gran) and my two grandaughters love this music . Like what you like ...
The beach scene does it for me
The Tin Wall. Many of us are in an awkward position. Both, spiritual and material.
This is my favorite Ultravox track ... and even Mr.X
Mr X is the high point of Vienna
Very well done video. Outstanding quality, modern even today, after 40 years
One of their best songs. The early videos did get a bit surreal though
Some great synth bands from the 90’s , but there was no band that blended basic guitar, drums, and bass with a wonderful mixture of synth and electric violin like Ultravox. Their music was powerful and thought provoking and in their early years just looked too damn cool as far as I was concerned. Midge was a very underrated musician and wrote fantastic signature songs that when you here one you knew he was involved.
Except the Band Aid single he co-wrote. That was just terrible, I had no idea at the time that he was involved in the writing of that shit fest. That song put me right off my egg n' chips it did.
@@deanjohnson5400 To be fair, that song, shitty as it was, wasn't about quality, musicianship or anything creative (as Midge himself readily accepts and supports). It was "for the cause", so should be judged on that grounds, separately.
I remember kicking a ball in our road this year! The cars here were Cortina’s,Capris, and Vauxhall vivas!Oh those were the days! 🥰
They made such brilliant video's as well as making great music....
Ultravox synth sounds was amazing!
Unforgettable
One of my favorite Early MTV, Russell Mulcahy video he directed.
Too good Russell Mulcahy
Only my opinion but this comes from the greatest album ever written .Had the poster on my wall for years
Rage in Eden was the first Ultravox! album I brought. Played it so often it wore out!
Notable that Blue Monday by New Order was released just 18 months after this was in the charts. Interesting because the style of synth music changed quite a lot in such a short space of time between mid 1981 and early 1983.
I reckon the release of the Fairlight in 1979 and the later versions had a lot to do with it coupled with quantum leaps in technology then.
Its style of Ultravox, they had its own sound, its no need to compare to others
Thats a really good point bro. I think it had to do with the transition between analogue and digital synths between those 2 years. I loved listening to both bands back in the early 80s.
@@dariuskarvelis536 that's right 👍
m.ua-cam.com/video/kMD7UUMZ0pQ/v-deo.html this album is what happend I love Ultravox but Technodelic was what happend at least I think so.
Discovered this on the radio today what a tune
U-Vox is one of the best New Wave pop bands of all time ! M Ure is an awesome composer and musician !
Cannot go far wrong with Vienna, Rage In Eden, Quartet or Lament. Quartet is my favourite.
Masterpiece
Legendary group !
One of the most important bands of the 80s
Like Midge Ure said " Its all is so bizzare". Oh yes... The Thin Wall one of my Ultravox best song ever! 😀💕😀
God bless Ultravox forever...
the ultimate synth
A Masterpiece 😍
Timeless
My favorite Ultravox song.
absolute monster of a track - killer synthpop
A precious gem!
3:04 BEST PART
A timeless classic and 'kin wonderful in concert.
Agree. I was fortunate to get to see them on their final ‘Brilliant’ tour at Ipswich in the UK. One of my fine recollections of that night was standing at the front as the first chords of Vienna began. The audience was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Then the whole venue just erupted into euphoria as it kicked in.
Another memory of the night was Billy’s synths began to break down so the band improvised to get through. We hardly noticed. True innovators who could do anything with their craft. Love this band.
KLASSE ! Kenne den Titel seit kurz nach der Veröffentlichung, da ich das Album damals gekauft habe. Zum ersten mal fällt mir gerade auf, dass er sehr viel vom Mike Batt Song "Love makes you crazy" hat.
1981.... my FIRST 7" single bought I was prob 8 or 9yrs old LOVED this track... LOVE it still. But back then the video creeped me out with all the arms.
Anyway as I write this it's 1.34am... August 2021 I am nearly 50, married x2 kids... let me ask you where did them years go?
Just glad my 8yr old self was a cool dude too ... ;0)
Great video, actually one of the greatest of the era... This is my teenage playlist for sure.. ;)
Midge has said he was terrified during the filming when the hands were grabbing at him.
Russell Mulcahy's direction. He directed a number of music video's, mainly for UK based artists, all them good.
I want meet man like Midge , with his beaute ' and his voice , and with his talent.
Now, please, now.
Now. Please dear God , i love Midge, but he is married....
Qué elegancia. Muchos videos de buenas bandas synth 80 transcurren en universos retrofuturistas. Qué elegancia en la ropa. Lástima q ese mundo nunca existirá.
You might be cool but you’ll never be Midge Ure cool in this video, fantastic song, fantastic band
I like to think the guy on the beach is Mr.X
Yes surely ultravox and depeche mode the best synthbands!!
Still sounding like John Foxx Era on this song. Summer 1981 !
No, this sound is typical for the Midge Ure era from Ultravox. New Wave at it's best 🤩
Better than Foxx by a country mile
Ultravox took full advantage of the new (at the time) video era to create memorable mini movies. A great band with Midge's voice being one of the most distinctive of its time. Even though the band has gone, I'm delighted that Midge continues to perform to this day.
They remain on my playlist and always will.
I call my self Newultravox I might put bracket around each side l think people might get me mixed up with the ultravox of old lve even allows my self to use the old name for the one off songs friends of mrNo and while my syth weeps also hope you enjoy my the moon andwolves
Ultravox forever in my heart! In a row with The Stranglers!
anyone here in the 2020?
The section starting at 2:08 is amazing, almost as good as Vienna.
Good to see songs like this are not forgotten!
Garry Glos
one of best & unique arists to ever exist. ULTRAVOX 🎹🌀🔥
Absolute banger. Even after all these years.
Killer song
Ultravox are one of underestimate bands of the 70,s and 80,s the music is time less
This is the greatest music video ever made... and a great song as well!
Love it, love it, love it
Forgot how good this was
What was it about dropping glass balls in 80s videos. Duran Duran did it quite a lot and teardrop explodes
Same video director ..Russell mulachy (surname probably spelt wrong) but he directed duran Durans hits
The best part is the way he sings the word *die*
They don't make music like this anymore.
My sister played this on the videos that she recorded on Top of the Pops by mistake? Our friends and us were like wow is this Ultravox? Has an amazing beat, his vocals are sublime. It’s so cool! Yet we were into r&b and pop trash songs lol We brought the single and played the hell out of it and danced the robot till it was scratched. lol
Love This Band
Interestingly, the very nice-looking black girl that's seen behind Midge in the caption can also be seen in the next Ultravox video for "The voice". BUT - I swear to God it's her in John Foxx's great video for "Dancing like a gun"! I don't suppose anyone knows her name but it'd be so good to know...
And also the name of a bearded gentleman from "Vienna" video. He's nearly everywhere in early 1980s videos! "Look of love", "Love plus one" etc etc. Who's he?!
THAT SAX
Violin.
How many of you have thought of the deeper meaning?
I have. Glad someone else can read between the lines!
all their songs have a message..a deeper meaning..
I thought it seems like Midge in trouble with the other band members who are gangsters. Maybe it means how we're so dependent on each other / society.
@@lyrimetacurl0 Their Masons.....
Wow,,
Stfu no one cared in 1983 about sht, keep deep stuff on yer arse
2022 Aug 20 still here.
I'm glad i grew up in the 80 S
The signature of R.Mulkay is in evidence.
