I literally just started back using FL Studio only because they added a sync with hardware update. It's been 3 years since I got my MPC that's how good it is 😊
Same here… I got mine about 6 months ago and have much more fun on the MP as a posed to Studio One when making beats. At the end of the day it’s what you are comfortable using. But I’m starting to treat this MP like a relationship.
When I got on the MPC it took my beats to a another level. I love the hands on feel. That’s why I got my Nektar Panorama P1 (DAW Controller).

I'm the same way man. I get the sounds and rough draft down on my MPC One and than master it on FL Studio. Making a beat on FL , for me, doesn't feel as rewarding as it does on hardware. Using an MPC feels like molding clay for me and watching the beat take shape. FL Studio just helps me detail that mold into something complete. A DAW is just another tool we can use to express our artform. Awesome vid Malo.
For me, it seems easier to draw up music ideas and piece together samples, etc. on hardware then take it to the DAW when I want to take next steps. I have weak hardware skills and probably not near the same league as you, but I have spent enough time in DAW to have a comfort level there. Your videos are inspiring since your skills as well as your sounds are way up there. Thanks again for your advice.
cant agree more. I always start on my sampler and print stems in Ableton to further manipulate the audio and mix it

I pretty much see these samplers as instruments, and the DAW is where everything ends up for mixing and mastering. The main reason I bought the MPC 2000XL many years ago was that I felt like it was a chore to arrange drums on a DAW. Having the ability to use the pads to knock out drums was a big advantage (even more so if I turned off quantize). That process was way more organic than anything I could do on the DAW. At that time, there didn't seem to be as many options for hooking up pads to your DAW. Now, it's pretty easy to get a set up where you can drum right into your DAW ... the thing is ... after I got the MPC, I realized that it automatically gave me the SOUND I'd been chasing but was never to achieve in a DAW. It just seemed like the drums I put into the MPC automatically came out so much better than the same drums recorded into the DAW. The MPC definitively has a certain "flavor" we've all become accustomed to in hip hop, as does the SP1200, as does the S950. The workflow on an SP12000 is even more fun to me than the MPC workflow. Something about that sound and workflow makes it way more enjoyable for me to create on the hardware, then move into the DAW for all the technical mix and master stuff.

Great video. I use Cubase primarily as I also track live drums and guitars, but I sometimes start on my SP1200 certain grooves and just record into Cubase and chop up for arrangements. Then I enhance with my live instruments.
Something about the SP swing is another level. Add to this the 12bit crunch.
The key is not to lose the skills for either, because that can easily happen.

So glad you made this video as I was just debating the ups and downs of hardware vs software with a freind.
I went right to ableton with zero experience using hardware, the learning curve is steep and with just abletons baked in effects, and even steeper once you've acquired an arsenal of plugins. Not only that but now you have a learning curve integrating those plugins to your work.
I purchased the MPC Live 2 and I cant say that the learning curve isn't steep there either, I guess it's matter of time and experience to really know it.
However what the MPC did do for me was force me to dial it all back a little bit, create more space in my mix and learn to maximize my sound through minimalism.
Yes...the MPC does actually have a ton of functionality, but it also natively has limitations which can force you to pay more attention to root of what makes it a good beat!
For what the MPC is as hardware, it is definitely software to a degree, I do wish that the functionality of the MPC didn't feel so much like a constant "workaround" to get where you want to go with it

Facts definitely. Ever since I figured out how to control the Ableton drum rack with my Live 2 via midi, I no longer have any use for the MPC software.

@@malobeats In my opinion, it is very good for Mix and Master, with api/neve summing expansions, Tape Oxide/Studer per channel, Atr per Buss, + the channel strip Api, in addition to the fact that with apollo you can use the Dsp to monitor, then Native to mix ... I'm really sorry about the quality of the Phone amp, I bought some audeze mm500 but not enough power, having the twin sound.

Super dope video family and glad that I came across your channel on the timeline. I have been using Cubase for over 10 years now. I tried Ableton and I could get the workflow. Cubase is straight forward and user friendly for production (Came from Reason)......but any time you come from Hardware to Software welflow will be challenged becaue you arent used to it. Thank you do much for making your constant sharing of these great information. I’ve learnt a lot watching your videos. This is such an important topic. I’ve been making music for as long as I started using the computer (Fruityloops 2.5 to FL Studio 4) to Maschine MK 1,2 and 3 and then MPC live.
I found that I love MK(3) and MPC live because of the fast workflow when it comes to sampling. I figured this is the part that I enjoyed mostly when it comes to beat making. Once I’m able to flip a sample and add my drums, do a bit of tweaking. I’m good. With Maschine, I’ve got access to nicer plugins. But I still dropped it for MPC because I just love how fast the sampling workflow is. However, I have to concede after so many years that this becomes a very bad habit. None of those beats ever gets “finished”. I just get mentally tired when it comes to bouncing out tracks and adding them to a DAW. It suddenly gets uninteresting. (I have ADD so 😅)
I’m in the space where I’m trying to go back to DAW (ableton) for everything you said and actually want to use the better tools they have. But just like you said, sampling on ableton is literally a torture. I feel like I won’t even enjoy making beats anymore if I have to rely on simple/samplr (whatever it’s called).
I guess my question is, have you found a workflow that skips the tracking out to DAW step and blends the efficiency of MPC with the power of DAW?
Serato does exactly what you're looking for. For that and use it with your DAW and you'll never look back
Great that your using you DAW. When i first started i was strictly Mpc XL Ensoniq Eps etc 4 tracking bouncing tracks. Now when i went to studios and watching how my tracks where brung to life i was sold on combing the two Hardware and software.
Thanks for the discussion topic here. I have both MPC Live II and many other samplers, Sp 404 mk2, Octatrack, Tracker, etc. and Ableton Live 11 Suite with Push 2. If you never used Push 2 with Ab Live, do it, it's magic, especially since you worked with MPCs you will learn it quickly, its like MPCs only better and almost unlimited... and you have the giant screen to save your eyesight! I keep coming back to Ableton with Push to actually finish tracks. Load some tracks from MPC and manipulate them withe Simpler instrument plugin, You can auto save everything, and also jam on Push 2 in session view while recording the whole performance in arrangement view. Nothing comes close yet for this value. Thanks.
Always great to hear your thoughts. I'm a standalone guy but will get Ableton soon to mix and master. Seems like a good move for pro quality.
Huge fan of your videos and content bro. I’ve been learning Ableton for the past couple of years but have always wanted to learn how to use an MPC. Have you ever considered doing some tutorials or even private lessons online? I would definitely be interested in both options.
With a decent interface you can “track out” from the daw, back in, and get the same analog sound. Can even set the MPC as the interface and use it this way. With simpler you can manual chop or just use serato sample as most people have it as the go to itb sampler.
Or Use your MPC and MPC vst inside ableton, Plus lots of premade scripts online for using the MPC as a regular controller in ableton or FL with plug n play.
Best of both worlds is key, hybrid is the way 🎉
Slice your samples without simpler/sampler. Select a part between markers on the screen below, hit Ctrl+e (slice) and it will be sliced on the main screen. Faster and more fun than simpler imo unless you totally want to flip it, if you just need a few samples and maybe keep the timing slicing on the timeline is better. Then consolidate your slices, open the sample pool and you can change the samples. So you can use a classic break and switch the sounds. That’s my personal secret trick lol.
I got back into the beat making in recent years after being out of the music game for many years...I perfer making my beats on a DAW than when I had all the hardware back in the day.
Man, I’m so glad you took the time to share this with us. I also took a very long break and just recently started. It’s been hard for me adapting to the daw, but want to continue and pursue it some more.

Loving your videos man! Totally agree with the WARMTH from bouncing through analog cables and convertors. I come from the days of an 8 output snake cable bouncing from a SP1200 and ASR-10. Question : How are you bouncing when you cook up on the MPC ONE? I assume you're not doing 8 passes through the stereo outputs lol. I'm about to cop one, currently on Serato Studio and a MPD 226. Just curious if you're exporting stems as WAV's, and does it maintain the same warmth you're hearing from monitoring the beat through the main outs?
Thanks for sharing Malo, I definitely agree with you about making music on the DAW vs MPC. If I lean too much on one, I get a bit rusty and have to put some time on the other to get back into the swing of things. I also agree about how there is a difference between dropping samples in the daw vs recording it through good cables. Mogami cables make a drastic difference too. Much respect brother 🫡
So do you still use them both or have you made a choice and just sticking to one? I feel the same way and I'm considering selling my sampler and sticking to DAW
@@LFiers Still using both, but that’s not to say that you can stick to just one. My reasoning is because hybrid gives me the best of both worlds but there really isn’t a right or wrong way. It more of whatever suits you best.
@@carbonvibes What's your method these days? Do you just do a little bit in the MPC and then export it to your DAW to finish? Or do you use your DAW more overall to produce and finish beats?
@@LFiers So it all depends, if I’m working with samples I typically like using the MPC, kind of makes me focus more. If I’m playing the midi keyboard with virtual instruments I stick to my DAW. Once I’m done with the idea if I’m using my MPC I record the stems into my DAW. It is time consuming, but it allows me to polish the track much better than just using the MPC.
@@carbonvibes This is 100% exactly what I do. But I'm getting to the point now where I'm thinking if I'm going to go to the extra time to stem out all my MPC stuff to my DAW, why not just have it all on my DAW in the first place?
That's that step that does add up over time and can get mentally exhausting. I have 16 pad drum controllers anyway in my studio setup with Studio One 5, and Serato and I can slice up samples at the speed of light compared to MPC.
I'm really trying to love and justify my MPC live to but at this point, I'm genuinely thinking of selling it but at the same time I can't because it is fun haha. But don't I don't use it enough and I hate to see it sitting there collecting dust

recently, ever since I downloaded Fl studio mobile and I purchased one of the FL STUDIO high Level entries n Combine that with the APP vst plugin The workflow is amazing you can export whatever work you have from midi to audio thats in your mobile phone

Preach!!!! I’m an Abletoner. But I get the experience and fun on the MPC live 2. The Akai DAW looks like what Batman use at the bat cave. The VST with routing gives hope but I’m thinking about using the process you mentioned in early videos (routing from MPC hardware outputs)
I started to get back into production about 2 years ago after spending like 5 years focusing on gigging and playing keys. I got an MPC One to try hardware because I didn't enjoy making music using Logic Pro at all. I tried Ableton at that time and got rid of the MPC One to get a Push 2.
With all that being said, I learned to love my DAW and I'll never expect a standalone to fully handle things the way I write most of my music. But I grew up on sample based hip-hop and MPCs so I feel like I want one again! Haha. There is something nice about getting sketches on hardware and the MPC can handle a lot more than the SP. I'm probably getting the Key 37 to use as a song starter in the living room. Plus that Jura would make the 37 a useful keyboard for live gigs and serve a dual purpose for me as a gigging musician. I love both hardware and DAW, but for me learning the role of each was a big lesson haha.

Hey brother, thank you so much for sharing this. I completely understand where you’re coming from. Honestly, an MPC will be your best bet since it gives you the best of both worlds if you choose to finish your track in the DAW. It truly has been a smooth transition for myself, as I create my ideas in the hardware and final touches in the DAW
@@malobeats Yeah, man I'm realizing how crucial the export to Ableton set is on MPC. I do like to be able to switch up the environment.
Oh by the way! You can use the pads to chop samples on Push 2 and 3 in Ableton, similary to how you do on MPC. And you can quickly edit the start/end points with the encoders. I don't sample records or songs, but I often do this to piano or key sections I've played.

This is a bit of topic from what you have shown here but it’s driving me mad how to slave the Mpc live to the octatrack I don’t know where I’m going wrong as my octatrack is synced to mo sp404mk2 no problems but I don’t know what settings have to be set so the Mpc also slaves to the transport of the octatack any help please

Love the version of Westside Gunn - Midnight Studios at the beginning bro, how can I listen to the whole track?
I have Studio One and Ableton Live Standard but never really clicked with DAWs. I only have Ableton Live because the MPC can write Ableton files. Got Studio One for its unitary interface (no bifurcated interface like Ableton). I will use DAWs to mix but I use MPCs and/or the MPC Software to compose. I started out with workstation keyboard sequencers and hardware is my comfort level lies. When traveling, I do use Cubasis for Android to capture ideas because I’m not taking a MPC or a personal laptop on business travel. A tablet is all I bring since I already have a work supplied laptop with me.
It’s all about where you do your best work.

I bounce into Reason 12. I’ve currently been using Roland Zenbeats to produce. I use it like the MPC. It’s linear and fast. Feels like what the MPC sequences lanes should of been. Dope video.

Great vid bro. Also you can use the MPC One/Live as a midi controller to control the Ableton drum rack. You get the MPC swing with it as well. For the most part I use standalone mode but ever since I figured out how to control the drum rack with the MP I would use Ableton to make my beats whenever Im on the computer.
Akai really needs to improve the MPC desktop software because at this point its pretty useless.

Why do you feel the Mpc software is useless bro? I learned on the Mpc software and it uses 3rd party plug ins just like all the other DAWS. For me, I haven’t found a reason to use another DAW.

MPC has a compressor In the output, that's why it hits different. Even if you make two beats, one in the Akai software and one in the hardware, the hardware one will always sound better, punchier, hit differently.

Hey man ! Glad I found your channel! May I ask what Asus model that is U are using ?
I sample in the Maschine Mk3 and MPC Studio, using as few plugins as possible, so as not to overload my CPU. I only give a color to my samples and my drums by pressing certain frequencies. Then I export all my tracks to Studio One, my favorite Daw. And there, I use the EQs, compressors... I apply several compressions in parallel. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best workflow. A marriage of two worlds.
I’m in the same boat Malo. I love the hardware feel but the daw has more options. Please let us know if you find a good in between workflow.
The time stretch program is different on the MPC DAW (which is better) from the standalone in the MPCs. I use FL/MPC DAW as plugin *together which is better. Standalone feel but still in the Digital realm using DAW plugins Keyscape, Serum, Kontact/7, Spitfire, UA, Waves, Kush, plugins, which I find is best. Also with a Kronos in the setup, it's fully functional...

Big factor personally for me is if it was on computer fully I wouldn't see my wife as I'd be in the man cave all day. 😅 Having hardware lets me get creative with standalone on couch whilst she's netflixing.

Hi Malo, thanks for your continous input and inspiration! Have you ever used the newer MPC in Controller Mode with the MPC Software? I prefer to work like that with my X as it gives me much more flexibility and a much better workflow than only using the hardware alone. As I grow and learn I found out the MPC Software has certain limitations other DAWs do not have, for example it allows VST3 Plugins like those of Native Instruments only through a next VST2 Plugin called Kush View Element. This is really annoying. I started to work with Ableton and StudionOne and these problems do not exist there. They allow the use of VST3 very easy like it is know with VST2. Also the recognition of new VSTs is much easier and faster than within the MPC Software. I brought these topics to Akai for a while now but every new update coming does not touch these fields at all. When I talk with professionals it seems like none of them really have the MPC Software on their mind, so it seems like it is not really a DAW Professionals really consider working with. Computers are for recording vocals and mixing and mastering songs. But do whatever you want to.
This reminds me, I want to buy a 2nd audio interface (I use a 4i4 with mpc one) for my computer just to resample via plugins through my macbook. I've wanted to try ableton for sample warping or fine tune sample editing (nothing beats a mouse sometimes). I usually use Audacity for Mac sample editing, I've wondered if I can do the same in ableton but like you said Simpler seemed far too limited, I don't get why it's like that.
Also never found a good drum machine I liked on a DAW but that was probably inexperience. MPC just makes it so much easier.

It’s crazy how much can be done in a DAW like ableton. I just never got that feel tryna make beats on a Push the way the MPC gives me.
I love ableton tho, the ability to time stretch a piece of a sample and it still be in key and sound good, no artifacting. I just wish Push platform was more “in the box” idk I’m not sold on Push 3 yet.
I wish the standalone mpcOS war worked as well as ableton, at least in sound quality.
I‘ve often concerned with the problem of how I should record my lyrics onto the beats I am producing with the MPC X. At first I though MPC Software could me that way. But that‘s the same interface as on the MPC standalone. How would you do that?

I would use ableton or FL studio ( or another DAW ) to record vocals , its probably possible to do this on the mpc but not the easiest option to create an entire song .
I think the MPC is great to make beats but not the best to record a whole song + voices .

After your bounce the stems , you can create your songs in different DAWs , I think also in logic . But I never used Logic . I am a FL studio user and myfriends use most ableton

They have this plugin for Ableton by AZ-LABS that gives you the ability to lazy chop from your midi-controller with Simpler "MPC style" without a Push.
I recently picked up a push 2 and it really made chopping samples a breeze in ableton. Just like an mpc

I haven’t used the one or one plus. I have the Live 2 and used to use the X. I like that the one has more dedicated buttons and is more affordable and runs the same kind of software that all the other modern MPC’s do. The Live 2 is really cool for its portability and the built in speaker. If you’re on the go often and want something you can carry wherever and jam and not have to think about carrying headphones or having to plug in somewhere, then the Live 2 is really cool for that.

I really feel like daws don’t have the same heart of music no feeling. It’s too simple but comes in handy to editing and fixing things. I love to be able to move around in the hardware quickly to keep a vibe going and turning it into something more after. That’s just me though.
I make most of my beats ITB. It has led me through rabbit holes were I studied some of J Dilla's and Madlib's workflow. It always sound 70% close in terms of sound but there's no emulating the sound of a sampler. I want to end 2024 owning my first sampler. Not sure which one yet.

I been using Acid by Sonic Foundry since 1999 and before that Cool Edit in 1997 to make beats. Never touched any hardware but my beats speak for themselves

You should get a Push. Really adds the tactile piece that’s missing when going from hardware to a DAW. Push 2 can be had for as low as $250 which is a no-brainer. Stick with Ableton though. Eventually it really clicks
You can lazy chop in simpler the same as MPC. You only get 64 chops though.

You can only do that with the Ableton Push. You can't do that using a midi controller or your computer keyboard

Sampling will be a lot more fun with just a simple midi controller. Basically the MPC workflow.
I love what the MPC and SP offer but I love Ableton because I love my plugins and instruments more. I think it boils down to preference. If you use high end software than it sounds really good. If you use cheaply sampled software then yeah it sounds not as good. I compare it to the difference of sampling from UA-cam versus a record player. There is something about it.
Luckily I use the MPC Studio MK2 so I’m in the middle of both Daw and Hardware.
My DAW is my X. I mix and master inside the box.
You cant beat a DAW for overall production. The trick though is to have a few nice pieces of hardware all going into the DAW and you have the best of both worlds.
I slacked so much on re-learning Ableton after years of not having it. Now I just don’t even have the energy to learn it. I’d rather use my hardware (MPC One/ SP404MK2 / TE EP-133 KO2 )and route my tracks in. I wish I had more time lol

Great video! I've been producing with my MPC One for 3 years now and I've never used a DAW yet. On the other hand, I am just familiarizing myself with Abelton Live to do exactly what you are talking about, mixing and mainly mastering. However, since I also became interested in mastering, I managed to produce much better mixes directly from my MPC by using 2 EQ, a compressor and a limiter on my main output. It's all about being creative when you have less, right? I used this technic on my last beat ''That's Cool!" (you can listen to it on my YT channel☺) Peace man!

I've spent a lot of time with DAWs and I find they kill creativity a little for me. Let me explain..I lose a lot of time trying things that are a waste of time trying sounds, plugins, tweeking this and that. When I could be focusing my creativity on maiking music, the tunes, beats, structure etc. This is wher the MPC is much more to the point.
I was wanting to move over to mpc from ableton but serato sample is just to crazy for sampling, I feel I would feel restricted and limited if I moved to mpc, the pitching, warping and time stretching in the DAW is to powerful. The ability to slow a sample right down and pitch it to any key I want without minimal artifacts is just to good to switch:

@@terrelljonesmusic plus printing stuff off just to then put it onto ableton all seems long. Might as well just have it in one place. Got my MPD which lets me still slap the pads.

Still a noob. Been learning the MPC for about 3 months. I do miss the linear timeline visual that comes with a daw. But I don't miss using a mouse for everything.

I think you should give yourself more time to get use to the workflow you’ve started with using Ableton. Everything seems to be a bit more new to you. I’ve been using Ableton for 15 years+ and I have major placements as well. I started out on MPC 1000. And gravitated to Ableton shortly after. Save presets for both Ableton Fx plugins and your UAD plugins. To get a better sound out of Ableton takes some slight tweaking. Some of my go to plugins in Ableton are the Glue Compressor, Limiter, EQ, Saturator just to name a few. If you drop a few of these on the tracks that you need to beef up. You’ll see what I’m talking about. Also, Simpler takes time. Editing samples take time. It takes me a few seconds to chop. But it took time to get to that point. My main heart beat in Ableton is Maschine tracked out and Serato Sample. Over time you’ll get a speedy workflow to incorporate your hardware. I also got the SP- 404 MK2. I record my patterns directly into Ableton. Ableton overall is just dope though! 🤗💯

Although limited, MPC Software might be your solution of both hardware and software.
I've tried, and I've watched people use software. It feels and looks so unnatural and it's hard to flow. It looks like it's easy to get lazy and just loop a drum loop instead of chopping and sampling and each instrument/drum/note/etc

MPC LIVE 2 & FL 21 Over Here... I just Make the best mixdown beat that i can in the MPC, Then export the 2 Track/Stereo WAV File Into The Mixer in FL, Route to The Master, Put A OZONE 11 ADVANCED On The Master Tree Then Let A.i. Do It's Thing after I Set The Genre Specific... Once A.i Finishes, I Make Tweaks To My Likings or Other's, Then Add An Insight 2 at My bottom Tree To Make Sure I'm in Acceptable LUFS Streaming Range... And If There's A Need, Follow up With a Gullfoss Master Plugin After The Ozone and Tweak to Taste, And WhahLah.. I Usually End Up With a MPC Sound With A Little More Of A Airy Sound But It Still Stays in Requested Streaming Levels And Keeps Most Of It's Original Sound But Enhanced A Small Bit. LOVIN IT.
