A lot of people in ancient times thought that women had sinned or were cursed when they had their period. In some cultures, women would get punished every time it happened. Pretty messed up.
in some native tribes the woman would get the whole week off and the would go sit in a hut that was basically a sauna bleeding out onto moss pads, and the would be brought food and water and would just chill out with their synced buddies.
I know that people used to have to go into the desert until they stopped bleeding because it made them "unclean"
Considering the lifespan was shorter, women started puberty later than they do now, and women were almost always pregnant, plus you can prevent them by breastfeeding, women historically used to have significantly fewer periods than we do now. But that's just a generalization, it probably varied region to region in the world. :)

They used homemade tampons made of whatever soft materials were plentifully available, be it wool, feathers or cotton, wrapped with string, actually. Some cultures made period thongs stuffed with soft absorbent material or soft leathers or cloth (depending on how advanced the society was) that can be washed and reused. The last thing any female wanted was the scent of blood to attract predators when they couldn't easily fight them off. You can be sure that as soon as humans gained enough intelligence and use of tools, something was done about periods as a matter of survival.
As for the pregnancy thing Ad Astra mentioned: In times of stress or famine, a woman frequently lost her milk and could not easily conceive as the body shut down all but the functions necessary for survival. That was the story of humanity until the industrial revolution. Perhaps she's thinking of more recent times.
