Powers John's Lane vs Dingle Single Malt Batch 4 Irish Whiskey Comparison

- This might just be the single worst head-to-head whiskey matchup in Bourbon Van history. It's Powers John's Lane Irish Whiskey versus Dingle Single Malt Irish Whiskey Batch 4. Will these two whiskeys have anything in common beyond their proof point? At least there's beer! Slainté!

Dingle discontinued this Single Malt Series after Batch 6. I think these are usually 4-5 years old. They replaced it with their Celtic “wheel” series.
Hello Phil and Julie, I am a fan. Thank you for the even keeled and informative episodes. The very 1st Irish whiskey I enjoyed on my 1st visit was Powers John's Lane at the Brazen Head Pub after dining at the pub, indoors next to bar 2 based on recommendations (opinions) of bar staff and local patrons and have been a fan ever since. I purchased a bottle stateside a year or so later, opened the box (before the current tube format) and found a reproduction of an article that was the very 1st whiskey review along with a map (etching repro) of the Powers distillery in Dublin from 1886. The foldout measures about 24"x22" unfolded and folds to a neat portable parchment on quality paper. My last visit to Dublin, the May before the pandemic, Yellow Spot was my go to. I hope to always have a bottle of Powers John's Lane release to share with friends
Cool to hear Phil drop the whiskey and music bomb. I love Powers with loud prog music. Great video you two.
We just had Power's Three Swallow and really liked it, now you have convinced me to try the John's Lane. We also had Dunville 1808 which had the Peat taste like scotch. Most interesting.
Powers Gold Label is a good daily drinker, but my fave is Powers 3 Swallow. I had that at The Bank Pub every visit. Tried the John's Lane and it didn't hit me as good as the 3 Swallow. As for single malt, Teeling Single Malt is my fave. I'm glad you decided to do this theme this week. Thanks.
We "discovered" Dingle Whiskey on a recent trip to Ireland. The Celtic series is fantastic
Looking for John's Lane too.
I’m new to Irish Whiskey as well….I just subscribed a few minutes ago, I love that u guys are having so much fun and fun to watch
Thank you! Cheers!
I thoroughly enjoy Johns Lane, hands down my number one recommendation for someone looking for an Irish whisky.
I have the Dingle batch 4, first couple times I want super impressed, good not great. Third time it hit great though, more fruit flavors popped, I was pleasantly surprised.
Did I miss the name of the stout your pairing the whisky with?
Love John's Lane! Definitely prefer any of the Powers to any of the other Middleton whiskeys including the Spots and Red Breast. I personally prefer the Dingle Batch 5 over the 4. Batch 5 was aged in bourbon, PX, and madeira casks. That said, I think a better comparison to the John's Lane would be the regular no-batch-number Dingle Single Malt since it has a richer, bolder flavor. Unfortunately any Dingle is very hard to get in the US since they are a tiny distillery.
As coincidence would have it, I picked up the Powers John's Lane just about the time this video came out. First time I've been able to find it, and now I'm even more excited to try it!
We hope you like it as much as we do!
I've had the John's Lane just once and wasn't sold, but it was the neck pour and I need to revisit it. Haven't tried any Dingle.
We think the John's Lane is a very solid pot still Irish whiskey. We'll probably finish the bottle this month, haha.
Great job ya'll I will definitely keep my eye out for Power's John Lane!!! 💚🍀
It’s great! Cheers!
Love the video! Odd choices to compare, Lol! A Bourbon heavy Single Pot Still vs a Bourbon/PX/Port Finish Single Malt. Although both are distilled in copper pot stills. I’m not a fan of Dingle Batch 4. I have 5 and 6, and their new releases of Samhain and La Le Bríde are interesting finishes. Dingle is one of those brand’s people either love it or hate it. It’s known as an earthy single malt.
Powers Johns Lane is the best single pot still at this price point. It’s a Trad Pot still, Bourbon Heavy Finish and spicy full bodied.
Haha, super weird comparison for sure. On the bright side, we got to enjoy some unique Irish whiskeys and drink a lovely stout. Pretty good day!
Love Powers. Glad you didn’t get any berries with the Dingle.
LOL.
I love that powers. The three swallows is good as well.
Agreed.
The sample I sent was Batch 5 & it’s 46.5%. Slainte! 🥃🥃
Not sure how we got so confused on that one, but thank you for the correction. Regardless, it was a delicious whiskey and we're thrilled to have the chance to taste it. Thanks again!
@@TheBourbonVan don’t feel bad. Apparently I can’t add as 46.5% IS 93 proof 🙄 Kathy Huey gave me a sample of the Batch 4 and it was a very interesting comparison. I think I preferred the batch 4, but batch 5 is a tasty pour.
This was very interesting. John's Lane been on my Irish list too. Was waiting for...And if you are feeling a little "Randy" go with the Cask Strength stuff :) Diggin' the bonus footage😺 Cheers!
LOL if you're randy for more than 4 hours, try some cask strength Irish whiskey*
*we are not doctors and nothing we say should be taken seriously.
John’s Lane is worth the price, it’s a great Irish Single Pot Still!
Are those beer glasses from Hopleaf Bar? I grew up a block from there!
Yes indeed! Our old stomping grounds.
@@TheBourbonVan Funny- this is my first video of yours that I've watched. But I always drink stouts & porters with my whiskey. I'm so far a Scotch guy, but I'm looking to buy my 1st bottle of Irish whiskey.
If you appreciate the peat and smoke on Scotch, we'd recommend Silkie Dark Irish or Connemara for your first Irish whiskey. Both are peated and that might appeal to your taste buds. Cheers!
@@TheBourbonVan Looks like Silkie is pretty tough to get in Chicagoland right now. But I'm considering Teeling Blackpitts as well. Pricey though. Have you tried it?
Oh yeah! We forgot about that one. That's a very tasty whiskey.
I'm not a big Irish whiskey fan. I find most of them uninteresting. John's Lane is one of the exceptions. It is so tasty.
Have you tried any of the smaller brands? There’s a lot of Irish Whiskey available.
Such as? I'm willing to give anything a chance. I enjoy big, bold flavors.
@@aarongossage5064 check out anything from the Killowen brand, also Dunville’s 10 or 12 year PX. Tullamore Dew Phoenix also would be a good choice, it’s Cask Strength. I also like the Tyrconnell 10 year series. The Madeira and Port are very good.
Thanks for the suggestions.
The Powers JL is single pot still & the Dingle is a single malt though both are 100% malted & I think unmalted barley. So they do have different flavour profiles.
Very different, haha.
I thought “Single Malt” just refers to the use of 100% malted grain, typically barley. Single pot still is a mix of malted and unmalted barley and can only be legally made in Ireland.
@@terrencemcdermott5840 it does. I worded it incorrectly. Single Malt is from 100% malted grain and typically barley. Single Pot Still is a legal designation pertaining to Ireland (like bourbon to the US) and is made from malted & unmalted grain.
My Irish whiskey and beer of choice is Midleton Very Rare and Bud Light. Sometime I mix up which is which.
Yeah that’s right. I said it.
The John Lane is a great whiskey. Never tried the Dingle. Sounds tasting though.
Your palate is second to none. Have you ever tried them as a boilermaker? Life changing!
Guinness and Jameson stout
Beautiful.
HOPLEAF!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky! 😃
Now if only we could have produced a better matchup!
