    A few facts to clarify:
    The thumbnail is referencing data from the city in 2018 stating that only 25% of trips within city limits are by car. In contrast, 34% are by bike, 11% public transit, and the rest by foot. Source is in the description, please check it out!
    I don't want to discount the work done by the working group in the city. Cities don't just become biking paradises by accident. It takes a coordinated effort on all levels to achieve something like this. I simply suggest one way which they could have done it.
    If you have any further questions or issues, please let me know!

    We need more cities like this in the US!!!

    Your bottom line here is really good. It seems like framing good bike infrastructure as an investment that enables locals to reach popular destinations in their own communities and enjoy themselves doing it is a great way to garner local support and funding!

    I grew up in Baden-Württemberg and back then I raced bikes which brought me to a lot of places in Baden-Württemberg. I didn't think much about how good the bike infrastrucure was at those places but every now and then I came accross something that blew my mind and the bike bridges in Konstanz was one of those things.

    Moved to Konstanz in September to Study there and in especially in the summer it really feels like a long vacation here. I come from a rural part of Germany and the infrastructure here compared to most other city's is just unbelievably good, especially that I as student don't need a car or anything other than a bike to reach anything in and around the city in max 15. Mins

      I'm happy to know that I wasn't too far off with that in the video! It really seemed that way to me. Thanks for your comment!

    8:54 On the left side, I think I have never seen so many empty parking spaces in a city in Germany. Unless it was a work day and they are all at work, it is really impressive to have so many empty parking spaces near a residential area

    This is an example of what is possible and very MUCH needed in our changing world

    • @TheRuralUrbanist
      @TheRuralUrbanist  Рік тому

      Yes! Now we know it's possible, even in a city with relatively conservative leadership like Konstanz. Let's do it everywhere!

      @@TheRuralUrbanist don't forget Freiburg (esp. about "cycling works only, where it's all flat").
      I really like to see people showing these positive examples, because Germans tend to concentrate on negative things, not on what's actually good.

      I do need to take another look at Freiburg, and also Tübingen is very good.

    Seems to be very similar to my home city of Kiel (northern Germany). A lot of bicycle streets, biking trails and a nice waterfront promenade! Though the raised cycle tracks (especially the bidirectional ones) seem pretty narrow and so do the sidewalks next to them still pretty good though :) Maybe you'll find some opportunity to visit Kiel in the future, it has also been ranked 4th by ADFC in the category of 100k-500k and has some truly amazing bike lanes (also many bad ones of course)

    Excellent video! I certainly do have to pay a visit to Konstanz and Freiburg im Breisgau! Had I known this prior, I would've visited em during my 40-day Interrail trip in the Summer. By the way, what camera do you use, the quality is really good!

      You should! And I used an iPhone from my old employer as well as an android phone. Stills are often from film scans, but I can't remember what I used in this.

    I would really prefer they only put asphalt on bike paths. Those cobble stones are impossible for most people to skate on, and also for cyclists they can be quite uncomfortable. But overall the infrastructure looks great. Exceeding some Dutch cities easily.

    • @TheRuralUrbanist
      @TheRuralUrbanist  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I also wasn't crazy about that part but it was a super small section. The rest is mainly asphalt or similar.
      Interesting to hear that Deutschland can surpass Netherlands at anything 😅

    • @i.k.8868
      @i.k.8868 Рік тому +2

      @@TheRuralUrbanist Well, the Netherlands is not uniform. There are plenty very conservative municipalities where they don't invest in cycling infrastructure.
