    Thank you for watching! If anyone is curious, I do plan on doing more New England centric content in the future, however, I live in Germany for the timebeing. I got maried last month and have been incredibly busy, so apologies for this taking so long. I really enjoyed the challenge of learning about a place which was foreign to me. Let me know what small towns, villages, cities you think I should visit this summer or would make an interesting topic for a video. I am largely limited by where the train/bike goes, trying to take advantage of my 9 euro ticket.
    If interested, I also have a link in my description for tips. I am still waiting on my visa and can't work for an indefinate period. I hate asking for money, please only give if you want to/can. Thank you all so much for your support on my first video, I was not expecting as many views as I got. As with that video, there will probably be mistakes of every kind in this one. Please feel free to comment or email me with any issues. Thanks!

    I like that you incorporate google earth and other maps to explain and show exact locations, roads, and connections. This makes it very clear and enjoyable.

      Hey, thanks! It was a comment after my last video that made me realize maps are a valuable tool for helping people understand a place. In the future I will work on making the visuals more consistent.

    Hey I've been there! Pacing on this video was alot better than the first 🥇. I think projects like these are applicable in small-town USA but usually only succeed in towns with a sizable population within walking distance which is rare. The natural growth that comes from small projects like these needs rail or better public transportation before these projects will see widespread adoption since we aren't dense enough without them. Maybe someday we can make a change for the better

    • @TheRuralUrbanist
      @TheRuralUrbanist  2 роки тому +2

      We'll see. I think that projects like these are actually a large part of what supports a population in walking distance. We still have places that could support something like this, but the idea is more that projects are done in steps to see what works and doesn't.

    Great video full of interesting ideas! I'd generally agree with you: Most people aren't fond of large-scale, immediate change, it feels destabilizing and makes many people instantly skeptical and negatively biased against projects that would otherwise increase their quality of life.
    The main issue I see with the step-by-step approach is that we are running out of time: If we want to stay within the 1,5 degree Celsius climate change goal, we need to cut our CO2 emissions by half in the next 8 years. If we want to stay within 2 degrees Celsius, we have about 12 years. Unfortunately that does not leave us with much time for slow, gradual changes that would have been far more popular, we would have needed to start with that 30 years ago. We need drastic and rapid improvements in public transportation and in renewable energy sources in particular almost all over the world stat, and that will not happen without some discormfort, unfortunately.

      Thanks for watching! Near the end, I mention a point about how big projects and major change are not always good. As you said, I mention that they are sometimes necessary. I almost wish that I'd mentioned: projects should be proportionate. I am a huge proponent of major transit projects, but even these need to occur in steps. These changes in Bad Aibling, although relatively small, we're still major projects.
      So in the end, I think both are necessary but that you'll have the best results over time with incremental change (with every leap forward is the chance of great reward but also great risk). Higher % chance of success when things are reasoned and planned out.

      Personally, I think if we just eliminated the regulations that prevent us from building these types of places today, we'd be in a much better place.

      Hey, glad you liked it! I think the next step should be further routing cars away from the downtown to make it more nike/pedestrian friendly. A road from the North to the West would really help!

    This was a great video! I'm very glad you mentioned the number of cars at the end of the video, because that was my thought as well watching this video. Germany seems to have this problem of knowing that walkability is important, but not wanting to reduce cars, and so hold themselves back from becoming a true green country. They are certainly much better than the USA and Canada, but they still have some work to do.

    • @TheRuralUrbanist

      Thanks! The frustration is real, trust me. I think that they usually do the right thing for pedestrians, but there is very little to try and capture car trips.

    Great video! I am hoping to improve walkability in my rural town, but (for understandable reasons) much of the available information on the topic is about larger cities and urban areas. comment for the algorithm! random note, thank you so much for either transcribing your own subtitles or paying for that work, it's much appreciated! however the video would benefit from a closer proofread pass at the finished subtitles :P i noted a few transcription errors- most comedically, a replacement of "cycle path" for "psychopath" at 9:35. great video, and thanks for the reminder to subscribe- i genuinely forgot!

    An exceptionally thoughtful video, especially in comparison to the typical Europhilic anti-car fare served up on several UA-cam channels. My question is, doesn't the consistent and important role played by the health industry in Bad Aibling part of what made this possible? Isn't is just so that not every town can have a draw that brings in revenue to the city like in Bad Aibling? And then doesn't that make this less feasible elsewhere?

    • @TheRuralUrbanist
      @TheRuralUrbanist  2 роки тому +3

      It's absolutely correct that not every town will have an amazing draw. That said, towns can at least make a draw for their own residents. I've been in towns without a major destination, that still have functional and walkable downtowns. That's what so great about these places: they're scalable and adaptable to the needs and wants of the people who live AND visit there.
      I still am very much for reducing cars to the minimum when a viable alternative exists. I'm not as vehemently anti car as some, but cars still can choke a place. Bad Aibling is, and I didn't touch on this so much, being held back by auto traffic. The next step hasn't been completed.
      In the case of Bad Aibling, the health care industry is sort of like concentrated out-patient care with an emergency hospital serving the wider region. This network of independent outpatient care centers actually creates a large number of pedestrian trips, as patients frequent the outdoors for recreation. There are also retreats and the baths which have a similar affect. So those both allow for more pedestrians, prevent further expension with the current road network, and I'm sure (add revenue). That said, many people live here without anything to do with medical.
      Thanks for the discourse!

    Love the focus on smaller towns. So many urbanism channels limit their analyses to cities with hundreds of thousands of residents, when it's just as important to consider urban environments in the 10-50 thousand person range.
