    68 here and in a much better financial condition than Katherine (some modest long term investments, savings, a very small monthly pension and social security). I do have a mortgage but it's modest. I couldn't help but feel sorry for this beautiful soul. Granted, she has made some bad decisions (haven't we all!) but barely complains. She never asked for sympathy...just some guidance and was willing to do what she had to do to improve her situation. She's 67...not 37. Long range planning much less digging out of a hole is that much more daunting at that age. Kudos to you Katherine for your resilience!...we are all rooting for you!...many blessings...

      Thank you for the kind comment. I am truly doing my best to identify what is IMPORTANT to the person I am speaking with. Simply advising someone to stop going to Starbucks or to cut back on takeout, for instance, is something everyone knows. So, how can I truly understand the underlying motivations for that behavior? The questions were excellent, and Catherine responded with grace and clarity. (And personally, I can deeply relate to Catherine's experience with her adult children)

    I'm 62 living in the Philippines but from USA. Just now I'm able to start saving. With a household of 5 we live on about 1300 usd per month. We live on my military pension so social security goes all towards investing. Been out of debt for several years because at one time I had 87,000 dollars in credit card debt with a minimum payment of 2,700. I made the decision to never go down that road again. It's not always easy to work in your 60's and 70's because the body isn't always able. I wish her much success.

    I watched the initial video with Catherine and felt so bad for her. And I'm so happy for her now taking charge and dictating terms. I realize this could have been us but for reasons I cannot explain we took charge of our finances in our late 50s and really went to it. I will be 66 in a few weeks and our situation is so much better now. I don't fully understand how we got into our situation so I cannot speculate on how others got there but we in this society think that once we are old enough to collect SS everything will be great and we can travel or visit when/wherever we want. No, having enough income to pay expenses leaves little for emergencies or excess shopping or just simple pleasure in life. So happy for Catherine hope she is able to continue to make progress.

    The thing i get from Catherine is that she's a sensitive soul who has probably been up against it a lot of her life. Her decision making hasn't been great but not because she's reckless but likely because she's lived under a lot of stress for years. This is true for many people. It's so easy to look at someone from the outside and judge the decision making but under a lot of stress, most people are just coping, trying to do what they can moment by moment to make themselves feel better. This is such a great interview. She looks great, oo. the little hand knit cardigan and the coordinated hair bow. I just love it!

    • @user-lf2lf6wy4z
      @user-lf2lf6wy4z Місяць тому +1

      I agree!!!! So much of the 'input' on these threads is completely judgmental and downright mean. I've been there - under so much stress and barely coping so I understand. With the cost of just living, and pensions pretty much gone, it can be almost impossible to fund your own retirement too. I've watched videos where people are foolish with their money and don't prioritize - but that's not true in all cases. And the fact that they've made the effort to be "audited', publicly, says something too.

    Romain has a nice gentle style, not so tough like Dave Ramsey or Caleb. Catherine could pay off $1, 000 of her credit card debt per month, with her new income, so after 20 months she can be debt free, if her debt is $20k? Also, she could use a food pantry and save ? $50 per week on food, so she would save an extra approx $2,500 pa for her emergency fund using a food pantry. After 20 months, she would be in a very good financial position doing these 2 things, ie debt free and have $2,500 plus in an emergency fund.

    Thank you so much for making public that people on Social Security cannot have their money from that garnished! Of course if we can pay the debts it's better to do that, but if it's not possible then federal law does protect seniors who Limited means! You are awesome Romain ! There's a law firm called HELPS that will represent you for free or lotte cost if you need to stop paying debts and need help from debt collection harrassment. I'm 63 years old and struggling with that and their videos were of interest to me and I'm trying to get the word out to other seniors who are struggling in a terrible way.

    • @Savannah-ed4rv

      The important thing is if you have been sued by a credit company and they have gotten a judgment that you can have twice the amount of your Social Security or pension protected in your checking account, no matter where it comes from. The important thing is to only have one account because if you have more than one and you transfer money from where your Social Security is deposited then that second account would not be protected. Even if they do garnish it there are ways to get the money back!

    This video had allot more of the clarity I was looking for from the last. A discussion of what depts could be put off at that age and a discussion about preparing a emergency fund. I still think a five to ten year housing plan should be discussed, it is that little thing everyone wants to put off thinking about as we watch rents skyrocket. I could be overstepping and imposing my own views, but it seems to me that her spending reflects an argument she is unwilling to make on video. Food is important for health and you can't just cut expenses bye lowering food quality; especially as you get older and the health ramifications of those dietary choices becomes harder to ignore. Thank you for making this video. Above all I think giving her this exposure has been an amazing opportunity that has probably led to others reaching out. Truly UA-cam at its best.

    Romain, you are very humane in your interactions with Catherine. Glad to see seems to be in a better place. Sad thing is that she cannot rely on her children. I recognize that one son is in bad situation himself, so that is a non starter. Its unclear why the dynamic with the other son is not in the best place. My wife and I watch over my MIL who has alzheimers, and I would always help parents and siblings (as well as nieces and nephews). I hope things turn out okay for Catherine.

    I'm really glad he asked the question about the children. Life goes easy on some people, for others it's a hard ride. It doesn't surprise me that she doesn't have support of her children because I think people who do are in the minority. I and my brothers looked after my mother, who died last summer. No way we could have let her go into a home. She died at home with her dog, with us with her, just the way she wanted. But I have been a nurse and can tell you that an alarming number of people with children have little or no support from their children. It's far more common than most people realize.

    Her video was my introduction to this channel, and it was 1 or 2 days ago. I didn't know this video existed at the time. I'm glad she did exactly what I suggested on that video to lower her debt; contact your CC/Lender companies, it's in their best interest to have you pay off as much of your debt as possible and they will lower your debt, remove interest, remove fees, give you a payment plan, etc. The alternative to them is bank ruptsy, selling your debt to collections, or carrying the debt with incurring fees and it not getting paid until the owner passes away, in which they will get nothing.
