- Me and my mom rode our bikes along the San Gabriel River Bike Trail in Southern California for Mother's Day. We started our ride in Azusa where the trail begins (or ends) at the the San Gabriel Mountains and rode 38 miles west to the end in Seal Beach. We rode at a comfortable pace and got there in 3 hours and 20 minutes. We had an average pace of 11.4 mph. It was a really beautiful ride. There were some homeless encampments under some of the overpasses, but no one bothered us. We didn't hit any headwinds until we were approaching Lakewood (about 8 miles until the end) It wasn't that bad, but it was noticeable nonetheless. I would definitely do this again! Now we can say that we biked from the mountains to the sea!
There is a small parking lot near the Azusa end of the trail. Just park, lock up and take off. The wind off the ocean gets stronger as the day goes on so I would advise starting in Azusa and thus enjoying a building tailwind on the return leg. One time I parked and left from Seal Beach but regretted it - the wind made the return trip a mess. Also, go with a buddy for sensible safety.
Thats a great idea! We will plan to do that for next time :)
I think it is so awesome that you and your MOM did this ride together, and on Mother's Day! So cool! Thanks for recording this. I am doing this ride tomorrow morning, but starting from Pasadena. Did you and your mom ride back the other 38 miles for a total of 76 miles? Cheers!
Hi Bruin, Im so sorry I just am now seeing your comment! I hope you had a great ride! We had my dad drop us off in Azusa and we rode one way to Seal Beach, then rode home, we live about 5 miles away in Huntington Beach. Let me know how you liked the trail and which direction you took!
@@SoMuchAdventure Gosh, 3 years later for MY reply, sorry! I rode from So. Pasadena to San Gabriel via surface streets, then picked up the Rio Hondo Trail (I believe), which then took me to the SGRT. Total miles to Seal Beach and back, including 1 add'l mile for getting lost, 73 miles; but, 19 miles shy of home I hit the wall and very slowly finished those last miles. I erred by not having a proper breakfast, then only eating 2 Clif bars and 2 small packs of Trader Joe's mixed nuts, plus water and Gatorade. That just wasn't enough nutrition for this amount of miles. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Where do I connect to the San Gabriel valley river trail in azusa I am in covina GPS keeps sending me to West Covina to connect with it
where's the entrance/parking area?
Im so sorry Im just now seeing your comment! I hope you were able to find the parking area. We had my dad drop us off, but I did notice there was a small parking area near the Azusa start (or end) of the trail.
Congrats ladies.!!! What a ride, but do-able. Did you car back?
