I just bought this VST and I got here. Can't even describe how awesome it is to see Protoculture actually do these videos. I am still listening to the Refractions album to this day! :)
I demo’d this for three days and didn’t like it. On the third day it clicked and I ended up making a few patches I really enjoy and getting things out of it I wouldn’t otherwise know how to make, using what else I have in Harmor, Padshop and Vacuum Pro. It’s easily gritty and harsh but you can actually get some really beautiful mellows out of it as well if you pay close attention to the gain staging like is mentioned in this video. The effects in my opinion are not good (at least the reverb; I keep them all off though). Playing with this synth I feel like lofi/Boards of Canada just totally opened up for me, and combining it with a distortion unit (like the AMPEG PA just gave away), you can get some really satisfying overdrive tones. Great video manual, essentially, by the way, it helped me a lot in understanding especially the feedback/boost/external modulation. Overall, really happy I stuck it out even though I didn’t enjoy it in the beginning. Really nice to have this for $30 as after last night I think I’ll be using it quite a bit. Hopefully I can get Oberhausen for $10 later on, or else I’ll probably just buy Diva or even Zebra or something and call it a day with the subtractive synth stuff.
A good introduction video. I don't notice actual real excitement from you for this VST. And that's understandable after following your complete video. My honest opinion is that this is a very mixed bag. Unfortunately the interesting parts, sync, FM and other modulation options sound very un-analog and unsmooth. Especially the FM. Thin. Audio rate mod is, hmmm let's say weak and choked. It ends where it should go starting right up through the roof. Ring modulation is only a weak shadow of my hardware MS-20 ring mod or the Softube Modular Ring Mod. In general I get the impression that there in truth is a thin or at least average audio engine underneath this nice GUI. It's clearly audible here, even from the naked OSC sound alone... But as soon as modulations starts...weight and character is gone missing. I am sure from what I hear, if this emulation hadn't build in all those nifty saturation - distortion - overdrive under its hood, this VST would be generic sounding at its best. Without all those drowning effects layed onto them the instrument itself sounds blank and without special characteristics. The overdrive stages are just an (ear) eye-wiper here and function to hide the weaknesses of the engine beneath. In conclusion the result for me is very unsatisfying concerning the sound alone. But the fact that it also misses a deep mod matrix makes this thing nothing more than a toy for any synthesizer freak.
Perhaps you should swing by a used-car dealership or see about a motivational speaker to get you excited. From your comment, you probably monitor your mixes with "Beats" hyped consumer headphones, yeah?
I am new to synths- for this plug in, how do I set it up as a track in Logic? Does it require MIDI input or can I input a voice or guitar, say? Can someone point me to a good “basics” UA-cam video? I’d love to incorporate synths but have zero knowledge. Thanks.

Great demo! Would be cool if you had a wave-form display plugin loaded, so we could see stuff like Pulse-width and distortion clearly
