He's not intelligent; he's just repeating platitudes. Kids today memorize test questions, take the test, and learn nothing. In the old days a 3.5 GPA from a top tier engineering school meant you were the cream of the crop; today all the kids have a 3.5 GPA. I would say only about 10% of the students at top engineering schools are any good; this means employers are left scrambling to hire the few good candidates. It's funny because if we advertise a job, we get hundreds of applicants; yet often there isn't a single candidate that is qualified.

They now are 23 and 25 with great jobs, no college debt and are very happy. As a parent I'm happy to say that they will do better than I did, and I did well. Best part for me was windfall retirement money that we weren't counting on. If you don't have to go to college don't. My kids would run rings around these college kids. Charlie is right when he says college is a scam but there are some degrees worth your time, money and effort; ESPECIALLY if you graduate without being indoctrinated. Business, engineering, bio/chem/physics for doctors, history/criminal justice for Lawyers. And that’s about it. I used to think psychology was great but they just make you think everything is your fault. They quite literally get in your head which is ironic 😂

He points out that there are useful degrees, but in general it is a scam. I grew up in a good area, and people go to college to actually do something with their lives, at a reasonable cost but these are becoming increasingly rare. If 41% graduate, and 50% of them just get a job outside their degree, then about 80% of those going to college made the wrong choice, and wasted their money. Good job to those who actually went specifically for a job and not just to go.

This was an excellent, well-crafted argument. I'm a full time senior in college getting my online economics degree but I also went into a diesel mechanic apprenticeship at 15, became certified in that area and now I'm a machinist and welder at a high end fabrication shop where I only work 3 days a week but still make right at 4 figures a week. Trades may be dirty but they are not cheap. You don't go to college to get a job, (with the exception of maybe accounting, finance and such like) you go to college to learn how to think. Then you go and learn a solid trade if you want to get a well paying and satisfying job. I'm infinitely more happy and satisfied working with my hands than I would be working behind a desk in a "soulless laptop job." Thank you Mr. Kirk! Please know that some of my generation have heard your advice and similar advice from out parents and taken it to heart! God bless.

I quickly realized that the people there were neither intelligent nor that the degree would help me in any way in my life. I did an apprenticeship as a gas, water and heating fitter/plumber. There is such a severe shortage of skilled workers in the trades that you now earn more net than if you started in an office job as a business administration graduate. A friend of mine who is studying informatics is currently doing his master's degree because he couldn't find a job with his bachelor's degree.
