Thanks for this! I just did a set for an Athearn and used an ho scale slot car press to accomplish the task. The tools I have did not fit at all and having 4 hands would have come in, well, handy! I chamfered the very beginning of the inside of the gear with an exacto knife to make it easier to start and then my ill fitting press worked fine.
There is a vertical version of your puller - NorthWest Short Line Puller II - that can be used for the second wheel as well. You need to find a bolt with the correct screw thread (for a flat end to press with) to use instead of the supplied bolts that have the pin on the end. Use a suitable bit of thin metal between the wheel and the nut to spread the pressure.
Solo, thanks for sharing thiss video. They are very nice models but could not figure out why the gears had so many problem affter while.. Own a good collettion of tthe E7's and E8/9 and a couple of Geeps. Not looking forward to regearing those, but I want them to run nice. Thanks for sharing the information and the video. Muse
It's not just model trains that have these problems. I picked up a older xerox copier from a local church (for parts) and as it turned out the only thing wrong was a split gear buried deep inside the machine. Exactly the same type of situation as on the P2000s and a few others I've come across.
I have a Proto 2000 PA unit but the gears are not the same as Athearn gears. They are very different I need to acquire some but can't find a replacement any suggestions?

dont press wheels too tight you run risk of getting short circuits if they're touching inside the gears
A much ezr method that I use is to press fit the wheel axle onto the gear with an adjustable plier and then use the NMRA gauge to calibrate.

584835 is the part number for those gears. I am not sure where to get any. Maybe North West Short Line.
