    My first year of college i had 2 withdrawals, one from chem 1 and another in physical science. Not only that, i also had an F in microbiology that same year.
    Years later, I am now in medical school. While i had a rough start it is important to note, I retook the classes and had success in all of them and continued my successful trend through the rest of my years.

      So glad this was helpful. I got into graduate school just fine with a W grade lol. Grad school is really interested in your overall application and doesn't care about a W at all. My school transitioned to 7 week courses some time in 2021 and that work load seriously got insane and I was bombing my Network defense class and my Digital Forensics class, and I had to email my professor's and let them know I was maintaining a 40 hour a week job to support myself and they legit understood and extended the deadlines, basically allowing me to submit my work on weekends, which was the only time I had off and I'd just sit there on the weekends and grind out all my work, I think the weekly discussions were the only things I had to do on time. So definitely email your professor's before you withdraw from the class

      @Rowena McDonald I'm glad you brought this up. Those past Ws won't impact your transcript as frightening as they may look. As long as they aren't F/Ws, they won't have an impact on your GPA either.
      I'm a big supporter of community colleges! If you decide to transfer your associates degree from the community college in the coming semesters, those W's still won't impact you. They'll just be listed at the bottom of your transcript and advising screens, but aren't going to be an issue in your application.

    I'm gonna be honest. I started college work on January 10th of this semester, 2022. But I kinda stopped doing homework since early March. And I am well aware it will hurt my grades. I recently checked my email, and I was notified that I was withdrawn from 2 classes. I checked my grade report and those 2 classes were listed as WF. A 'WF' can still be considered an F. I've taken a total of 4 classes, so my other 2 classes will also be a WF soon. The reason is because I've been slacking off: I've been really busy doing business and going out socializing with people. Basically, it's all due to poor time management and productivity. I am in a community college, but will this significantly damage my college career? Will I be able to retake those classes? How will this gradually affect my college career? (ex: when I apply for graduate school, if I want to enroll in a higher degree, or if I want to enroll in other schools that are not so prestigious)

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому +1

      @anriya thanthima thanks for asking this. So there's still some good news here. Since this is a community college, you have a lot more options. First, yes you can retake all of those. You might have to ask permission from the college, but that is possible and in this case a reasonable choice for any gen-ed or major courses. Second, you might want to talk to the college about withdrawing from all your classes this semester. See if this gives you any option to avoid or erase the W/F grades. Third, if you are able to go to a different college, you could always just not have your transcripts from this college transferred over. That means the W/Fs wouldn't follow you in the future.
      In the end, it is really common for students to have a bad semester, and even taking Fs in all your classes one semester isn't the end of your college career. Let me know what you decide! (Btw I started at a community college, too!)

      haha your good. TBH not a big deal especially because your still in your first 2 years. Now if you plan to attend grad school, after first year better turn things around.. but if you don't plan on grad school tbh you can get a C's and D's and be good as long as you pass the class you'll receive financial aid. Scholarships most time require higher grades.
      Keep in mind a C student in college gets the same degree a 4.0 A student gets.

      I've seen many cases where students surprise themselves by pulling off As and Bs in classes when they had though about withdrawing. Reach out to your professor and let them know you want to push through. They'll often give you lots of support. As an insider tip, many universities and colleges track DFW rates (the number of Ds, Fs, and Ws in a professor's class) and ask us to keep those numbers low, so you'll actually be doing them a favor by not withdrawing and pushing through.

    Thank you! I’m freaking out over whether or not I made the right decision. I’m in CC and hope to transfer to a university with a lower acceptance rate. I’m a math major, and in my current math class the professor is just not working out. I should’ve read the rate my professor, they are all 1 star reviews. I’m worried about my gpa being affected, but I’m more so worried because I don’t feel like I’m actually learning much. Like I’m just going through the motions but not being taught the actual concepts. This is a very important and foundational course for classes I will be taking when I transfer and I want to make sure I have a good foundation. I withdraw for seven classes because of mental health issues. I was charged for it because they were late withdrawals. Now I’m not able to go back into school until I pay the fees. I was so young at the time I didn’t know any better. Is there a way that I can get aid that will help me to go back to school because I can’t afford what I owe the school

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  9 місяців тому

      @amonnaerwin7851 this is a great question. First, I hope that having that time has been helpful for your mental well being. That's very important to protect your mental well being and I'm glad you are thinking about that. Second, I wonder if you might approach your university about treating the withdrawal as a medical withdrawal instead of just a normal withdrawal. If you were experiencing medical issues then, the best advice would have been to see if a medical withdrawal was possible and I have seen cases where universities have retroactively approved medical withdrawals in situations like that. That's a starting point and it can't hurt to ask. Also, I have a video up on medical withdrawals that will give you an idea of what those are like and what is usually required (although all universities may have different requirements).
      Next, let's try another long shot. Note to the university that due to those fees you can't afford to return and ask that the fees be partially/completely waived. Universities track something called "retention rates". That's basically checking if students graduate within a certain number of years. This is an important number for universities because if it gets too low it can cause them all sorts of funding issues. Recently universities have begun waiving fees or delaying them so that students can re-enroll. So let's ask if that's an option. I've seen cases where they'ed waived a chunk of the fees or simply let the student enroll with fees still owed. They'll often pull those out of student loans as they come through, but that lets you get registered.
      Another option: You can always look at enrolling elsewhere for a while while you save up to pay the fees. Your current university won't transfer your transcripts to another university until you pay those fees, but if you were to enroll in a community college and knock out some of your general education classes, you could later transfer them back to your original university which buys you some time to work up the amount that you owe there. Also: if that withdrawal semester happened to be your first semester of college, you could always just not go back to that university and simply restart your college degree at another institution. They'll send you bills, but that is unsecured debt so it is hard for universities to collect on that aside from refusing to release your transcripts. But if your transcripts is all Ws then you really don't need it. Let me know if this one applies to you and we can talk more.
      Another option (the least preferrable on the list) is to take out additional student loans to pay the fees. Generally you can borrow above your tuition from student loans, and if that's what is required to get through college, then sometimes that just what we have to do (and I say that from experience as I had to a couple times). However, I'd try the others first.
      Keep in touch on this and happy to answer any questions you have along the way.

    Thank you for this video!! For my case in particular, I'm finding halfway through the semester that I really want to change my major. This has led me to begin thinking of dropping my 8am-12:30pm chemistry class, which is a major stressor in my school life as of right now. My schedule is packed with other classes (and a part time job!), and I've been thinking of switching to majoring in business. (Im currently in a CC and will transfer out next year). I honestly think i could stay in chem and get a B or a C, but i just dont think it would be worth it because 1) its a very time consuming class and i would have to put alot of time (that i dont have) studying it and 2) i really dont have the heart to stay in the class until the end of the semester. I feel as if these are valid reasons for me to drop the class, but even after finishing your video i am still scared out of my mind to take the W because Im afraid itll mess me up in the future. For reference, im currently a freshman and i dont have any W's at all so far. Would you mind validating my decision/giving any words of wisdom??

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому

      @cake I took a W my second semester in community college and it has never come up once in my entire college career nor my professor career. I think you have given the ideal reasons for dropping this: A. it is time consuming which means it will subtly impact your other class scores and B. your heart isn't in it. These are good reasons to consider a W.
      A few caveats: first verify with your cc that you are not past the withdraw deadlines which means you could end up with a W/F which counts the same as an F. In that case, I would complete the class and aim for a B or C. Second, verify with any scholarships or college funding you have that this won't impact your scholarships. Third, make sure this won't drop you to part time (which can impact student loans and scholarships; note part time usually means less than 12 hours).
      One final and really uncommon caveat that specifically may apply to your case: that chemistry class may count as a gen-ed course and since you mentioned transferring soon to another school, we want to check one last thing. Your cc may have transfer agreements that allow an associate's to directly replace the first 60 hours of a 120 hour four year degree. In this case, you may want to take another science class that replaces this gen-ed in completing your associates degree. I'd double check with your class advisor to see if this was your general education science class or not. Let me know what you find out.
      Btw I just put up a video on advising, too! ua-cam.com/video/93Fi3tUA_h8/v-deo.html
      Would be great since you'll want to talk with your advisor on that last point. Let me know what you decide! Glad to help and please share this video with others so we can help them together.

      @@dr.maples hello! Thank you so much for your quick response!!
      regarding the points you brought up:
      For some more context, i have already taken a chemistry class last semester (chem1a). The one i am thinking of dropping is chem1b (some schools may call it chem 2?). So I believe i have already fulfilled my GE science credits! In addition, i have until the 14th of April to drop with a W!!
      About financial aid/scholarships… I’ll have to double check but i believe i should be safe. As a CA resident, i’m currently under the Promise Program, which offers 2 years of free tuition at my particular CC, and i don’t believe a W will impact that in any way. As far as units go, i’m already taking 19 units this semester so even if i drop chemistry, i will still be over the 12 unit requirement to be counted as a full time student.
      I’m hoping to transfer to a UC college and after having done some research, it doesn’t seem like a withdrawal will cause any problems… I think it’s just scary for me to commit to receiving a W for fear of being viewed as a coward 😅I know that isn’t the truth at all, but in my area education culture is a little intense haha.
      Once again, thank you so much for your response!! I truly do appreciate the time you take to give students like me advice. I’ll make sure to look into your other video you linked!! Thank you endlessly!!

      @cake excellent news. This looks increasingly like a great case to take the W then.
      I agree, this is not likely to be a gen-ed course for you. That's good. Also, you look to be within your drop deadline, which means withdrawing would be a W instead of a W/F, also what we want to see. And also you're still going to be full time with that kind of course load, which can impact things like scholarships and insurance.
      Do check closely on that financial aid issue. I've seen state financial aid like your example limit both retakes and the total number of hours they'll support before graduation. Your financial aid office will have the final word on that, so just give them a call Monday or stop by their office. Worst case scenario you might end up paying for three more hours at the end of your degree, but that might be worth your mental well being in this class, and best case it is a non-issue.
      It's really interesting that our transcripts do list our entire course history. However, almost no one will actually ever see it beyond your transfer credit office (who will enter your transcript into your new university's system) and (to a lesser degree) your faculty advisor. Employers and grad schools will look that you have a degree, period. Grad schools will consider your GPA (which is not impacted by a W grade) but that's only one piece of the puzzle.
      Thanks again for watching and I hope you like that advising video! Look forward to hearing from you on future videos.

      @@dr.maples Hello again! So sorry to be back in your comment section so soon.
      Update: I did it! I dropped Chem and have never felt more relief in my life. However…now i have a new problem 😅.
      I decided to keep my physics class to save my transcript from getting another W, but I’m not so sure if that’s the right move. Does getting two Ws within the same semester look bad? I’m switching to Business… I only took Chem and Physics for my previous major, Bio. I already have physical science credit. I also have already consulted my Financial Aid office, who said receiving two Ws will still keep me on track for Financial Aid.
      However, I’m not too sure what two W’s within the same semester might entail. The UC schools (which i am primarily applying to) don’t seem to care (according to online forums). However, I can’t help but feel like there’s a catch. Would it be unwise to take another W? So sorry to ask for your advice again, but i’d love to hear your opinion! @cake no worries! I enjoy answering questions like these and I'm glad to help. The answer is the same: two Ws has no more impact than one W so long as you are still full time and the conditions from my previous comment haven't changed. This actually sounds like a very logical case as you won't need physics as a business major and we already noted these aren't gen-eds. Based on what you've said, I don't see any issue. Plus this will lift the stress of completing two hard, time-intensive courses you won't need. Win win.

      @dr.maples  Рік тому

      @Is It Edible? That's always a rough area for pre-me, and you do you need to think about your GPA (and more importantly your mental health) as part of this process. It makes sense. One minor thing: you mentioned having a total of four classes, so you're +-12 hours. That's full time for FAFSA/student loan purposes. Dropping below that number can sometimes have some impacts on student loans depending on when you drop. If you are using student loans, it is a good idea to call your financial aid office your loan provider just to verify if and how this would impact you. Note you'd still be part time (more than 6 hours but less than 12) and part-time is still eligible for loans. Just check on that. If you haven't already withdrawn and that's a concern, you can always just take an F and, if you plan to continue the pre-med path, retake it later to replace the grade. I've got a video up on that. And if you've already withdrawn, you're fine. Just check on the student loans part to make sure there are no surprises for you in the spring (which there likely wouldn't be, but all lenders are different).

I think it would be good to chat with some of your faculty in that field and see what they recommend. I've worked with some pre-med students, and chemistry is the barrier everyone fights, so know you aren't alone here. • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  3 місяці тому

      Great questions! There are a couple things to consider here so let’s walk through them step by step.
      First, the number of W’s won’t impact you here so we don’t have to worry about having more than 7 if needed. This means you can take a W if needed (but check that it works with any student loan or scholarships you may have, ask questions if needed on that).
      Second, I am a big believer in taking C’s rather than retake or W a class. If grad school is accepting a C or higher and you can get a C, then I think you’d be fine to take that C in stats and move on. I’d talk with the professor and let them know your scenario and get feedback on your grade. See where you stand with them before you decide.
      Third, if you get a D instead of a C you can retake the class and try for a higher grade or (if the semester is just a lost cause early on) you can withdraw and try again. Likewise this is a class that is likely offered every semester so it should not be hard to retake it. I would look into if there’s a really great faculty for this class however. Ask around! Nothing wrong with finding an easier faculty here.
      Now let’s talk about your grad school application. There’s two things to consider here: acceptance into the program and getting funding. Having a C is less an issue with the first part (acceptance) but more an issue with the second part (funding).
      If you have an overall good gpa and a good application, many graduate programs won’t care about the C grades and will accept you as long as the rest of your application is strong. This includes most any regional college and even some bigger state schools. More prestigious programs will have higher expectations on grades and that may be an issue for them, but most programs aren’t concerned all that much if everything else is good. You can even explain it as being an area you are working on in your application materials.
      That said, if you are applying for funding in graduate school (having the university pay your tuition and give you a stipend to study), having those C’s will hurt your chances for funding. However you can still take out student loans to attend classes once accepted and you can work hard in the program to gain funding your second year.
      That’s a lot of information! 😄 In the end the C’s won’t be an issue in getting into most mid-range prestige grad programs if the rest of your application is good. However those C’s may limit your funding options meaning you’ll need to take out student loans. Happy to answer questions!!!

      @Talla Rios this does sound like one of those situations where a W could be the right choice. Taking a W won't mess things up for grad school, so I wouldn't worry there. Let's go through the some potential issues, however . First, will this make you a part-time student (generally less than 12 class hours). If so, that can impact your scholarship/student loans. Second, will this delay graduation? When is this course offered again and does that match your timeline for graduation? If neither of these are issues, them I think prioritizing your well being (and therefore your family's well being) makes total sense.
      Btw, if that happens to be a sociology research methods course, I've got a whole series on research methods as I teach that! Even if it isn't sociology, there might be some useful videos in the playlist. Check it out and feel welcome to ask questions or let me know if there's a methods topic I can cover in a video/comment. Happy to help you on your path to graduation.

    I am still deciding whether or not to withdraw from Korean class. I am withdrawng because I am getting an F but because of some social anxiety problems I have. If I withdraw, I will get a W, and it’s at the end of semester one. Will this greatly impact my ability to get into colleges for any country?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому +1

      Great question @NanamiLuv_26 ! In my experience, the F would be worse than a regular W because the F impacts your GPA. Going with the W in that case makes sense here. However it sounds like you are at the end of the semester...withdrawing at the end of the semester often gives you a W/F which is basically just the same as an F with the condition that you withdrew past the deadline. A W/F counts as an F toward your GPA. I would check that policy at your university so you can be sure. It looks from your comment that this might be the case.
      Either way, a W or even an F is unlikely to hurt your ability to get into most any other college even in other countries aside from applying to very prestigious universities like Oxford or Harvard. Note in your application that you withdrew or failed the course due to social anxiety issues and that it won't be an issue going forward. I'd imagine admissions would be satisfied with that if the rest of your application is strong.
      Also, I'm so glad that you are taking care of yourself in dropping a class that is giving you anxiety. I think that is a wise move. Let us know what you decide to do. Thanks for watching!

      @WuLinfeng-gb6uv thanks for watching! I am glad this was helpful.
      You raise a really important issue here regarding international students possibly having different rules. While I've worked with many international students here in the United States, I can't think of a case where a withdrawal has come up.
      I could see a possible issue where international funding sources could have different definitions of what a full-time enrollment is when attending university in the United States. Likewise, there could be requirements about remaining full time while attending classes abroad.
      If you are thinking about withdrawing from a class and are an international student, I would get in touch with your university's registrar or advising offices to see what unique situations might apply there. If you do, let me know what you learn. I could look at doing a video on that in the coming weeks. Happy to answer any questions you may have. Thanks again!

    I have a professor who is giving too much material to remember and i thought i could push through but his upcoming modules include doing 2 modules a week but the length is ridiculous. He gives 3 sets of lecture slides, the chapters are 60 pages each, he gives atleast 4 articles per module and 3 quizzes per module as well. This was intimidating but i still felt like i could use spring break to work ahead, but he wont open the modules until the week of its due date. This is stressful as i have 3 other important classes to worry about passing, 1 of which is english. I want to drop with a W but would I have to retake the specific course if its not required specifically for any of my goals?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Рік тому

      @Joshua William so this is a great example of where a W is important. As I'm reading it: 1. this class isn't required for anything in your major or gen-ed and 2. the workload isn't feasible for your schedule. The only issue at hand is you mentioned having three other courses, which I'm betting means you are at 12 hours or thereabouts, right? This raises the question: do you need to be full-time to be counted towards any scholarships or health insurance policies? If so, it may be strategic to take an F in the class then plan on retaking it with a different professor next semester (just to boost your GPA) or just taking the F and moving on if it isn't going to hurt your long-term plans. That said, if being full time isn't a requirement for you, this looks like a great case for a W. Let me know if you have questions and let me know what you decide! Thanks for watching. Please help me out!!!
    I'm a transfer student and this is my first semester at this university. I'm taking 4 classes, but only two at the university. One of which is a Circuits class, which I already withdrew from. And by doing so, already set me behind a semester. But now I'm planning to withdraw from my math class because I feel like I know the material, but can't seem to do well on the exams because of how fast paced the exams are. However, I do believe that I can still pass this class with a C. Now, since I'm already behind a semester, I was considering withdrawing this second class and retaking it next semester together with the Circuits class I had dropped earlier (Term Withdrawal). Mainly because if I get a C on the class, I will start with a GPA of 2 at this university. I'm believe that I will to do better if I retake this math class. However, I'm not sure if it's just better to just get this math class over with. Also at the same time If do withdrawal, I'm not sure how bad two W's in the same semester will look on my transcript. I have never previously withdrawn before.
    My school has no penalties for withdrawing, but they do if I have a GPA below 2.5 after completing 6 credit hours, which I haven't yet. In your opinion, what should I do, withdrawal from the math class as well and re-attempt it the next semester, or just finish the class even though I'll most likely get a C??

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому

      @Light Dark great questions. I enjoy working through these kinds of scenarios, too. There's a few things to unpack here, so I'll go through them step by step.
      First, my approach is that if you can get a C in the class without any major doubts, then finish it and get the C. The only exception can sometimes be if it is a course required for your major and they require a B or there's some core major knowledge you need from the class. GPAs are not that important in my experiences, and you have time to pull up one C. So my first opinion would be to finish the course.
      Second, there's the issue that withdrawing from the class would technically withdraw you from the university in your unique case. That's probably not a big deal in this case so long as they'll let you back in in the spring. That's something you'd want to check with your university's policies. A faculty member can help on this, too. For me, that gives us a reason to stay in the class, though, just to not have to worry about that. So, still on board for not withdrawing.
      Third, your university has a rule about withdrawing if you have a GPA below 2.5. Sounds like you don't have that scenario. It might be a thing you'd want to keep in mind down the line, but doesn't sound like it applies just yet. So, still on board for not withdrawing.
      Fourth, I'd talk with your math instructor about your grades and likely grade outcomes. Ask them where things stand for you this semester. Swing by office hours and talk with them about any issues you're experiencing. Most importantly, get an assessment from them about where your grade stands. If they are thinking a C (or better) is reasonable, follow their directions to get that grade and call it a day.
      With all these things in mind, I'd stick with the class and get the C. If you withdraw it isn't the end of the world, but there's nothing wrong with just getting this general education course out of the way. Happy to chat more about this as needed! Let me know if I missed any important details, too.

    • @Dark_light7
      @Dark_light7 2 роки тому +2

      @@dr.maples Thank you!! So I just checked and I would only be withdrawn from the term, but not the university. However, my eligibility for Financial Aid would be affected as I will fall under FAFSA's course completion minimum. And I have already spoken to my professor, and unless I make an A on my third Exam and a high B on the final, it looks like I will most likely be getting a C. This is Engineering Math class, so I've taken calculus classes already. However the math department here make their exams in a way where you have to work fast, 12 multiple choice question with 50 minutes. (4 minutes per question). Also no partial credit. So yeah, apparently they grade you here on fast you can solve, not if you know the material. Which I hate because I'm not used to test taking like this and the exams reflect like I don't study.
      But anyways, just to be clear, do you still think I should just get the C, even though I feel confident that I can get a B or even an A next semester since I know how the exams work here? I would not fall anymore behind by dropping this class. I just ask one more time because I'm doing engineering. And I might be thinking too ahead of myself right now, but I sometimes fear that I cannot afford to be betting Cs early on since I have so many difficult engineering courses ahead of me.

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому +1

      @Light Dark so this is great extra info. Let's see if we have reasons to change our premise of completing the class for the C.
      First, you mentioned it is for your major. I just guessed it was a random math class, but this is slightly different and more important. I'd ask your major advisor their thoughts on this one. If you were my student in sociology and this were social statistics, I'd tell you to take the C, but engineering could be different and I'm not an engineer. So check with the major and get their thoughts on this. Tell us what you learn.
      Second, financial aid is a possible issue. If you withdraw here, you'd be withdrawing all your classes. I recall FAFSA will cover up to 180 hours (double check me on that) so you'd likely be fine taking the W on that front. However, if the semester is roughly less than half done, you can end up being expected to reimburse them as you aren't making good progress toward your degree. For that reason, I still lean toward the C.
      I sympathize on those speed math tests. Testing was never my strong suit in algebra.
      So final decision? I'd get feedback from your major. If being an engineer major with a C in math is going to be a problem for your future jobs, consider dropping the class. If not (or if you could simply retake it in the future and replace your grade with something higher) I'd consider sticking through the course.
      Tell us what your major says! I'm excited to learn more as I don't often get to work with engineering students.

    What about an F in a minor? Will it hurt my career in the long run?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  3 місяці тому

      Great question! No, it is very unlikely to be an issue, especially if you aren’t planning on going to these school before starting your career. Let’s walk through things below but short answer is I wouldn’t be concerned about it.
      First, employers rarely care about your transcripts and classes beyond verifying thru Human Resources that you do in fact have your degree. Most won’t even go so far as to request your transcripts. If you are requested to turn in your transcripts as part of an application it is unlikely they’ll do anything but verification that you have your degree.
      Next, failed classes are generally listed at the bottom/near bottom of your transcript. They’re not listed either your major or minor, so in the very extreme case where someone actually reads your transcript, it isn’t a mark against your minor, it is instead like any other F in a class.
      Now one possible area to consider is how the F impacts your overall gpa. Employers rarely care or ask about gpas and one F isn’t going to dramatically hurt your gpa if your grades are otherwise passing. If you are headed to graduate school the F would impact your overall gpa and somewhat hurt your application but as long as the rest of your application is strong you can still get into your program. It also gives you something you could discuss in your application to explain it away. Ask questions as needed about this.
      One very (very) extreme case where this F could be an issue is if that minor course had some important specialized knowledge that you needed in your field. This is very unlikely (because such a course would often be a required course for the minor) but something to consider and ask more questions as needed. This is more likely an issue for a major however not a minor.
      All that said, I wouldn’t worry about it. Move on and get the graduation stage instead. Thanks for watching! Please tell your friends about the channel!

    I’m a high schooler doing a few dual-enrollment courses online. I’ve recently figured out that I’ve bit off more than I can chew while taking too many classes😅. All of my classes are fine grade-wise except for one. It is possible to complete the course with a low C, but the big problem is the time it will take to complete the course, as I am very very far behind in it. I feel if I do complete this course it will not be fully worth it, due to the time spent may affect my performance on upcoming finals in other more important college/highschool classes. I’ve already started the withdraw procedure, but should I email the professor as of why I plan to withdraw?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  4 місяці тому

      This is a great question. First, yes this does sound like a good opportunity for a withdrawal. Consider too that all that time spent catching up will also take you away from all your classes. Second, I’d double check with your high school guidance counselor or dual enrollment counselor to see if withdrawing would cause you to have to pay any tuition or fees. They’ll have a policy on this if they paid for the class as is sometimes the case. And if you paid for the class then you should check if you can get any of that money back. The college will have a policy on that as well. Third, yes do touch bases with the professor. Let them know if what’s going on and get their feedback on this being the right decision.

    I have already transferred to University and will be staring in the Fall to complete my degree in Health Science. However, over the summer I was hoping to complete Chemistry 1A (a 6-week course) while I work full time on the night shift. I am barely surviving in this class. As of now, I have a 77% overall but with each test we take the percentage slowly decreases. We still have 2 weeks of class left and in that time we have 2 tests, 4 quizzes, a surplus in homework as well as the final exam. The last day to drop with a W is Monday. I'm wondering if I have already transferred will it affect me as harshly as I'm thinking. I would much rather drop than fail completely. Any thoughts?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому +1

      @jordankelli25 this is a great question and has a couple options. First, withdrawing in this situation isn't going to impact your transfer so long as it won't impact scholarships and other things I mentioned in the video. It also won't change your new university's decision to transfer you in in the fall. Second, check your new university's approach to GPAs. If they don't include transfer credits in that GPA, I'd try to pass the class so you don't have to take it again. Third, if you've already transferred your transcripts from previous semesters as part of your transfer, you could simply choose not to update your transcript and not send in this summer class if you don't like the final grade. There's a chance your old college might automatically send it, but generally they'll want a transcript fee to process that. So if you don't request it, I can't envision them sending it. As such, you could again try to pass the class if you like and if the grade is an F, then you don't transfer it. Fourth, I think there's some beauty in just withdrawing from the class and starting fresh at your new program in the fall. I can't imagine one class at this point would delay graduation, so as long as withdrawing won't impact your scholarships long-term, it seems very reasonable to take the rest of the summer off from college and start fresh at your new uni in the fall. @mayaj536 no, it won’t negatively impact you or alter anything in that transfer process. Ws don’t impact your gpa (so long as they aren’t W/F grades from late in the semester) and they aren’t something that the college will look at in the transfer process. As this is a core course, I am planning to take it again in the upcoming semester. However, I am also concerned about the potential impact that withdrawing from this course might have on my future job applications. Can you please provide me with some guidance on how withdrawing from a core course might affect my academic record and any potential future job opportunities?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Рік тому +1

      @Reddy Naveen thanks for asking this great question. In my experience, I've never seen an employer care about a W or it impacting your employability. Employers generally never ask for your academic transcripts, and when they do it is only so human resources can verify you have a degree. That's it. It won't impact your employment opportunities.
      One thing to consider in this case is if you need to maintain full time status (which is generally 12 hours at most universities in the United States). Full time status can be important to keep scholarships or to keep on a family health insurance policy before the age of 25. If you have scholarships, check with your provider how going briefly part-time (less than 12 hours) would impact you. If that's a problem, you can always fail the course then retake it the following semester so long as that won't impact your scholarships. A second option is to take a second-term course (often called 8 week classes, and that's if your college offers them as not all do) and then withdraw from the current class so you still have full time status. Likewise, you can look at things like directed research in your major or talk with your major advisor about other options.

      @Mj thanks for asking. 99% of the time you should be fine. The only exceptions are if you are if you're on a scholarship program that limits your hours/retakes, if you are in a program or college/university that limits the number of attempts on your class, or if you are past your college/university's deadlines for withdrawing. On that last one, withdrawing past the deadline means you usually get an F/W which counts as an F on your GPA. Check that on your school's academic calendar or contact your registrar. Hello! I am currently in high school, and the school generally allows the first 1-2 weeks to change classes. I decided to sign up for 4 APs, and decided to get 1 removed because I’m way too stressed. However, If I change the class and already have an F, will I get a W or WF (I am withdrawing within the 1-2 weeks time limit)?

      @Online-ky8mn Thanks for watching! This is a tough one to answer as high schools operate on different policies from colleges, and I have no experience with the high school policies. I think the safest bet on this one is to go to the guidance counselor or your assigned academic counselor first thing today. Time is important here so check in with them and get their perspective. Let them know what is going on and that the stress is a problem. I would think they could move you without issue because it is a high school course but let’s ask them first and let me know what you learn from them.

However I doubt that would be the case in high school when you are asking to change courses so early in. I’d expect (just my educated guess) they’ll move you to another class without much issue. That’s so frustrating when we miss a deadline by a short timeframe. That said, the W isn’t going to impact your job chances whatsoever. I’ve yet to see an employer care much less even notice a W. It’s rare your employer will even request your transcript, and in the cases they do, they are only looking to verify you have the degree you put in your resume. In short, you’re going to be fine. @itztc521 it is rare that there is a fee or fine to withdraw and if there is it is generally low, $25-$100. Most schools don’t charge a fee to withdraw in my experience but I am seeing these kinds of fees added more often as universities look for revenue streams and ways to cut costs.

      It would be useful to know more about if these were all on the same semester or across a few semesters as I can give some more in depth suggestions. But no, a W won’t hurt your gpa (which employers don’t really care about anyway) and they aren’t going to change your status at your university. If you have student loans or scholarships, going from full time to part time via withdrawals can have an impact on your tuition that semester. Likewise both scholarships and loans can also have a maximum on the number of hours you can attempt and still get funding for your degree. In both cases it’s good to check with your loan or scholarship providers for more info.

But do you think 6 withdrawals will hurt me in transferring from a community college to a state university?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Рік тому

      Great two-part question. First, the Ws aren’t going to impact transferring to a state school. The state school will be interested in completed courses, gpa, and your overall application. Here taking the W was a far better decision than taking an F in the class as the F would definitely have impacted your application.
      Next part: the 6W policy. There is a chance it could be real, but it probably isn’t. Community colleges sometimes create peculiar policies like this to aid retention. More likely though it is a myth. I’d ask the registrar office or advising office (or if your community college is really small like mine was, just go to the main office) and ask. Ask for something in writing like the specific policy from the college. Odds are good it is a myth.

      @Muhammad 2.0 you bring up a very important idea here. When a visa requires attending a university full-time, you would need to make sure that withdrawing from a course doesn't put you below your university's full-time student requirements (for US universities that's generally 12 course hours). Same applies for withdrawing from all courses as you would no longer be full-time at that point. If you did need to withdraw from all courses, I would check with your university's registrar's office first to see how this might impact being an international student.

      That’s a common perception from university staff but in my experience it isn’t rooted in reality. When on the job market, employers never see your transcripts beyond a few that might verify your degree. Grad schools are checking you have a degree, your gpa, and in very rare cases specific classes you’ve completed (to determine any missing prerequisites for their courses). It’s unlikely the actual faculty graduate committee will look at your transcript as they focus on the rest of your application. I believe the W is an underutilized tool.

    Is it better to pass a class with a D or with a WP?

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  2 роки тому +2

      Perhaps the most important question, and the answer depends on a few conditions.
      First, if the D will impact scholarships, prevent you from moving forward in your major/minor, and/or prevent you from completing gen-ed requirements, take the W most every time. Nothing is worth interrupting scholarships. Also note some majors/minor require C or better in all their classes, so taking the D won't help you but will harm your GPA for the time being. As such, go with the W if you have that option. On the gen-eds, note that sometimes colleges require C or better in gen-eds. As such, a W would be better as there's no GPA hit while you wait to retake it.
      Second, will taking the D put your GPA into academic probation territory or prevent you from graduating? If so, consider the W instead. It varies by university, but most require a 2.0 to be in good standing and graduate. However, graduating seniors sometimes don't have their last semester grades included in their graduating GPA as an early graduation gift. Check your university's policies or ask your major advisor on this if it applies.
      Third, if the class isn't in the first example and the GPA issue in the second example isn't a concern, I tell my students to take the "D for Done". Retaking that class probably won't help you in your long-term plans. Just learn from the experience and aim for an A to pull up the GPA in the following semester.
      Happy to chat more if you'd like to tell us more about the class as it relates to your major/minor. Thanks for watching!

I reached out to the instructor and let her know I was concerned and wanted to take the lab but that I was worried about attendance…she wrote me back and said she reached out to the registrars office and had me removed and marked as “Never Attending” I’m not sure exactly what that means though…and whether its a good thing or a bad thing 😬

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Рік тому

      @C LJ 09 So this is a special, important case. First, you need to talk with your department chair, Title IX office, and university to let them know you were dropped without your consent while pregnant. Being pregnant is a legitimate reason to miss classes and is protected under Title IX policies, and withdrawing you from the class without your consent feels like a violation of that rule (not a lawyer, but I am a professor). That's a really big red flag the university should know about. I don't know your specific circumstances, but at minimum they need to know it happened, and I'd imagine they can remove this from your transcript if you press the issue. Get the Title IX folks on your team here and have them advocate for you as that's why they exist on campus.
      Second, a W for non-attending is no different than a W. It won't hurt you. It could somewhat impact your student loans or scholarship depending on your carrier's rules if that put you below 12 hours, but beyond that I wouldn't be worried. Now if they gave you an F/N (fail, non-attending) I'd fight that tooth and nail because your pregnancy gives you a protected status. More specifically, I'd have your Title IX team and your department chair fighting for you because also their job.
      Third, I'd also ask the Title IX team about having the W removed as well since you were protected status while pregnant, they professor apparently knew this, and dropped you without your consent. I think the ball would be in your favor here.
      Let me know how this goes! And if you have a professor on campus that knows you well, get them involved in advocating for you with your department and Title IX so you don't have to do anything.

    • @dr.maples
      @dr.maples  Рік тому +1

      @Mars happy to help. One potential issue is if dropping the class/both classes will make you part-time (under 12 hours). You can get FAFSA funding as a part-time student (which means you are enrolled in 6-11 hours), but it is less than you'd get as a full-time student. It can also impact any scholarships you may have. So keep that part in mind. If that's okay or not a concern, then dropping makes sense. You can focus on your other classes and dodge a low/failing grade.
      If dropping just isn't possible, you can also simply retake those classes in future semesters to replace your final grade with a higher score. That's fine if you are 100% going to have to retake them, like they are in your major or maybe you are going into medicine as a profession. It would temporarily impact your GPA, but as long as your college allows replacing past Fs with new grades, you'll be fine and it will fix your GPA.
      Since you are on a tight time crunch this might be a good case for calling your college's financial aid department just because they'll know all your institutional policies. Be happy to answer questions here as well. Thanks for watching!

      @@Mars-kt1kz Ah, got it. So these are the only classes. So here, withdrawing would be a problem for FAFSA. First, getting a D or C would be fine all around. A D is passing at most colleges except in some cases where the class is required for the major. A C is always passing that I've seen. Both Cs and Ds are considered passing for FAFSA. If you pass the class, most all colleges will still allow you to retake them to bump your GPA back up. You'll have to double check with your college's policy on that to be sure, but generally you're fine to retake it. That said, you also may be fine just going with the C or D as your GPA is good and may not be all that important depending on your path (have a brand new video up on this so check that out for more info).
      Do you think it is feasible you can pass both with a C or D? If so, I'd stay in the class in this case. And even if you fail one/both, you'll be able to retake it later. The anatomy class is tricky: if you drop it, I understand you'd be below the "part time" status (less than six hours). I would generally recommend, based on what I know, that you stay in the anatomy class even if you fail it. You can retake it later, but you won't change your FAFSA status this semester by failing and your overall GPA was such that you don't have to worry about academic probation or suspension. It's just a bad semester in their eyes and you'll rebound in the spring.

      @dr.maples  8 місяців тому

      @itztc521 it will depend on the school’s policy for that final deadline. There are generally a few withdrawal deadlines throughout the semester and as each deadline passes, students who withdraw are expected to pay additional percentages of tuition for the semester. For example the first deadline might be 100% tuition refund but the second deadline will be a 50% refund on tuition. Once you are near the end of the semester you generally get no refund. Depending on the school they may even charge a fee to withdraw.
      Your best bet is to get more info on your university’s policy for that deadline. You can often find that in the university calendar which includes all the withdraw deadlines. Your advisor or advising office or even your major’s department secretary can also help here. You sometimes can also find that info in your class syllabi and professors can generally tell you more about those deadlines but it can be hit and miss. It’s best to find the calendar for your school and start there.
      Note the withdraw policy won’t change based on if there are books for the class but the good news is that if there were no texts you won’t be out those funds.
