- In this video we go over the easiest way to create a mouth rig for lip-sync animations in After Effects.
A new tool called SF Caddy helps skip the complicated mess of expressions and slider controllers and simplifies and stream lines the whole process to a couple of steps. In this tutorial I show how to create your character rig, and set up your lip-sync so its ready in just minutes.
Check out the SF Caddy tool here: gumroad.com/l/xrfnH

Keyframe assistant > Sequence layers... I have been using After Effects for 13 years and I was today years old when I learned this.
This is great. Just downloaded it. It's saving me so much time.
Great tutorial
thank’s man!
it's amazing =D
thank you buddy need more video like this
You got it!
awesome!!!!
Thank you so much for this!
Glad it was helpful!
great tool
Hay quá thầy ơi !
Thanks for the video it’s will be useful for me, I need to do that for blender (3Dsoft) lego
loved this video thanks man the lip sync at the end felt off tho
thnq sir.. i've been wanted to learn this for so long
I'm glad today was the day you finally learned....hopefully!
@@TheKeyframeAcademy yeah i learned it but to practice i need to buy the plugin but i got demo version from aescripts.... will try practicing using that.. thanks alot
@@vishavaroraYT Awesome! If you have any questions hit me up and I'd be happy to help!
@@TheKeyframeAcademy sure sir
That’s very cool! Do you happen to know if there’s any similar plugins for motion?
thank you !
You're welcome!
Slight aside question based on your final animation - I'm guessing youre using Joysticks and sliders to get the head turning but what do you do with the mouth comp as part of the JSAS set up? Are you simply scaling and repositioning the entire mouth comp? Does this not cause distortion to the mouth lines?
Woow thankss.. 👍👍👍God joobbb
Welcome 😊
Thanks for the helpful video bro.
This is awesome! :)
Thank you! Cheers!
it's great video and great tool. Just bought it last night coz of this video! I just wondering how you rigged the hand so smoothly? you change the hand pose seamlessly. do you use Limber or Duik or another tool? I'm lil bit frustrated with making dialogue animation like this. Thank you Buddy
I actually used SF caddy for that hands as well! Its all about knowing when to switch that hands to make it look smooth.
Have you parented face with mouth for animation in final render ?
Hey man can you make a video of how to make a character in illustrator which can be suitable for rigging and animation? It would be really really helpful! Love your videos!
Hey, while I don't have a video about an entire character design in illustrator, I do have a video about how to design the limbs for your character here:ua-cam.com/video/PNs4jY-S2SM/v-deo.html
creating proper limbs is like 90% of what you need to know anyway.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy okay that's helpful too!! Thanks alot!!
Thank you sir. This one is very helpful tutorial.
Have a question
Did you took 12 FPS for all the composition you are using this project or just the mouth composition??
12 fps for everything
@@TheKeyframeAcademy Dear and respected Mr. Keyframe Academy ,first let me apologies is what am about to say is for a completely another video but here is what i would like to do and please you are welcome to give any input or guidelines... Hope you are familiar with an old school cartoon called "smurfs" in there is one character called "Grumpy Smurf" and what i would like to do is to edit this Grumpy Smurf to say certain phrases in his own voice?! Thank you in advance for your kind and unselfish help on this matter wish you all the best
Please somebody make this for Lego mouths & a bonus would be usable in Sony Vagus Pro 14.
besides sf caddy , what can i used for free?
when in a hurry I've also used character animator, loaded mouth shapes, imported audio, had computer analyze audio, it automatically then chooses the mouth shapes for the dialogue but you can then go into the timeline and finesse the mouth key frames, export as png sequence or alph chanel movie then import to AE.
Yeah, character Animator is definitely an option. But again, that requires some time investment to learn everything. And I think, depending on your knowledge and skill level in AE, the time investment in some of these character tools can be less than learning Character Animator.
The lip-sync tool is cool, but can be kind of janky sometimes.
RE: using Character Animator - sounds like taking 8 steps to save 1. Additionally, your imported PNG sequence isn't scalable like Shape Layers. But, I dunno. (small cough)
@@Toebiscuit Hey otterpops- I've already succesfully done it. Exported as a video w/ alpha, moved anchor, attached to full body/puppet that I'd already animated (in AE, not character). worked fine. If I needed to make changes (but typically I don't export the lip synched head til I'm happy with it) can replace easily. But it's good to know all the different ways that work for different folks. People may have more skills in one software or section of software over another and therefore it's actually faster for them than what you describe as '8 steps to save 1'. I certainly have used the regular lip sync process in AE but when in a real hurry and no time to super scrub the audio and set all the mouth shapes I like the option to have character animator scrub the audio and place the phenomes--then I can easily and quickly fine tune and change what mouth shapes aren't hitting right. Depends on the deadline and the style of animation being done--obviously no good for drawn. To each their own.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy yes that's true. Learning one software after another can feel overwhelming and take away from getting deeper into one. I've only used the process I described as a speed thing when under a deadline (& I know enough in Character that it saved time).Within Character they've improved the ability to read the track & assigned mouths but then very easy to fine tune and add or eliminate mouth shapes. It'd be great if the 'read audio track' option in Character would be available in AE, without having to jump between softwares, to directly access that in AE. Love the tuts--thanks so much for making and sharing.
I wish they'd either bring all the character animator features natively into AE, or bring some key AE features into character animator. Having to jump between two different applications turns me off.
Thanks u so much just wanted to ask and i hope u reply please
When u animate with duik or rubberhose
Is there a way to add depth to an arm moving easily
Example at
7:37 the hand animation is easy but
At 7:41 the forearm shape changes wich gives depth but its harder each time to do it... Is there an easier way
I'm using a tool called Limber that allows me to do this. You can watch this video where I go more into it ua-cam.com/video/AcEIT03Mrzk/v-deo.html
@@TheKeyframeAcademy thank u sir
@@zaouiamine6475 no problem
Quick question. Does SF-Caddy animate the inbetweens of mouth movements?. for example, if I have a mouth shape of "O" and then a mouth shape of "Ah", will it just flick from one image to the next, or will SF-Caddy seamlessly animate one image to the next?
It flicks from one image to the next.
How to make the character's head turning, how many draws we need?to make for example the character look front, left and right? is there some tutorial to do this?
Yes, but I would use a script called Joysticks n' Sliders to do that instead. I have a couple tutorials on my channel about how to set that up.
why i was unable to find the load items like what you had done in the video
Ok !
As I have never used after effects before
sir I want to know if we name the layers properly in illustrator only, will it be required to rename in After Effects again?
I believe it will transfer it over
@@TheKeyframeAcademy thanks!!!
How did you ungroup?
are this plugin free can you tell me bro
good understand voice, connect with me thanks
Get a series om duke, bro
Hey man, what is the setup you use for your workstation? (PC, monitor, speakers, headphones, etc... all the gooods)
I have a self built computer. Ryzen 7 3800. 32 gb of DDR 4, GTX 1070. My monitor is the Samsung 49' ultra wide. I forget the exact model number. Desk is from Ikea.

Is there another way to do the Alt + right bracket? I'm trying but it doesn't work :( thanks for the video!
Not that I know of
you can drag the timeline of all layer btw, to set the duration only 1 frame or any duration that you want
How did you get he mouth to move where the head went in the end animation?
A script called Joysticks and Sliders
this is difficult making animation in after effects still could not make out i dont understand those video this hard
Is there a way to auto-analyze the audio or is this a manual process? Thanks!
No in After Effects, but you can do this in Adobe Character Animate
I've been doing just the mouths in Character Animator and it's been a game changer. I know people complain that C.A. is a pain to rig, but you can just edit/redraw a pre-existing character's mouth using "edit original" in C.A., and then you just disable all the other body/head layers until you isolate the mouth. IMO it's worth learning.
@@DarthKegX thank you! This is super helpful. I see that CA is a really good option now.
Is there a good free alternative like this? This is right up my ally but I can’t afford it.
I found Mouth Shapes. Is similar but it doesn't show the graphic of the mouth in the button you use.
@@alejandracalderon2196 - Thank you!
I've never looked into mouth Shapes but it looks promising. You can also search youtube for lip syncing using slider control. There are a few tutorials out there that will show how to do it without a plug in, (though it does take some technical know-how) The advantage of tools like SF caddy is that it makes the process super simple (which is why it isn't free unfortunately) But yes it can definitely be done manually.
How do you bring the shapes into after effects as shape layers I’m trying but it’s not really working
we have a video about this: ua-cam.com/video/vO94V7n_JtQ/v-deo.html
Keyframe Academy thank you!!
Aaaa yes... plug in that u have to buy...
What about 60 fps?
Do you ever use Adobe Character Animator for lip-sync
Nope.
Why don't we want the layers sequenced upwards?
Hi, not sure why when I click "Load Items" in SF Caddy it keeps popping out this message: "Please select composition with maximum 100 frames". Can somebody help?
The composition that you are pulling your mouth layers from is too long. You need to shorten it to less than 100 frames long.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy thank you so much!
How do you open the SF-Caddy Feature?
its a script you must purchase and install
i dont know how you got the ruler its not there for me
You got to enable it first. It's in a drop down menu in the composition window
This method is good, but I think it's only good for flat, simple characters. If you're about to animate a more realistic 2D character, with lots of details/ shadows etc...The mouth won't look natural, but very robotic so it won't match the detailed character appearance well enough.
how to enable Sf-caddy penal ?
You have to purchase it. There is a link in the description
Help!!! Why is my keyframe showing as a marker
that is a hold keyframe, not a marker and its perfectly normal.
Can't this be done for videos?
I'm not sure what you mean...
the alt + ] part doesn't work with me lease helppppp
Do you have your layers selected when you hit alt+ ]? if nothing is selecting it will not work. You can also just click and drag the end of your layers until they are all 1 frame long.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy yes i did select all the layers
Sir, it doesn't let me to download the mouths in load items! I have followed your steps but it doesn't work!
What happened?
@@TheKeyframeAcademy in the end I didn't know what to do ;w;
What should I do?
I would reach out to the makers of SF caddy and see if you're experiencing a bug.
Hmm... the keyframe time remap way of doing mouth shapes is pretty old and buggy. The panel seems to speed it up slightly, but I still don't think this is a great method.
Which method do you use?
@@TheKeyframeAcademy I do mouth shapes as a group in a shape layer, and I use an expression to toggle transparency for the mouth group corresponding to the mouth shape... so then it becomes a similar process but instead of a frame number it's a number on a slider in a null. No precomps and no bugs with the wrong mouth showing up, which I used to get a lot with the time remap method
@@balls6906 Hmmm I've never had that issue with the time remapping, but I'll take your word for it.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy Well you still can't animate the mouths if they're one frame long
Has anyone ever told you you sound like Morty?😂
Nope
Bhai ye sf candy kya he😅😅😅
Can you please help me sir i Want to make yummy action tounge licking animation for my cooking channel intro

lol all this for a tool that doesn't auto-analyze the audio and place the mouths accordingly ! 🤣
tbh it looks random in this video
Still practicing.
When you say "Insanely Easy" do you actually mean "Absolute F-ing Ballache"?
I mean its fast :) But the mouth shapes aren't even close to real lip sync shapes.
Well hopefully you can manage to do better
I Dont understand ? all the different mouth are placed automaticaly on Animate CC ! It s generate with the audio you import ! Stop using AE and GO on ANIMATE friends !
