  • Adirondack Brook Trout Pond - Hornbeck Solo Canoes
    Mrs. White Dog and I took a day off of work and hiked our Hornbecks into an Adirondack Brook Trout Pond. It was definitely an adventure and an awesome day! The weather was beautiful, the hikes in and out were "interesting", the solitude was amazing and the fishing was good!

    I found in years of Adirondack brook trout fishing that lightweight telescopic rods with mini spincast reels were excellent for brook trout and easy to pack and carry. I even found a folding net that fir into a pants pocket.. Even small trout put up a fight on light tackle. If you prefer spinning rods and reels, they work too. You can cast a bubble with a fly or streamer attached. I can't tell you how many rod tips I broke bushwhacking when I used conventional rods.

    The problem with any pond readily accessible by car and short hike is that the locals fish them out shortly after ice out.

    Awesome little trip. Canoes are really a nice piece of art, and good to take them out and land mother natures art known as brook trout. Thanks for sharing the trip and nice job. Look forward to the next one!

    If you go back to that pond just let me know and I'll tell you where the trail is that goes around the swampy area. I live about 5 miles from Lake George, I've fished that pond probably 30 times.

      Thank you!... She is a pretty good sport. She hurt a little the next day but she'll definitely do it again! :) A huge reason we bought hornbecks is because of all of the adventures we could go on for the rest of our lives! Much more fun that way. I could have caught a bunch but probably only really fished for less than an hour including the trolling. The one thing we were bummed about is we did not see or hear any loons.... that is the true Adirondack sound for us.

    My experience in a rubber boat on a pond trolling a muddler minnow, is that I could not get going fast enough to get the trout to bite. Perhaps a canoe would be fast enough.

      I paddled a lot of boats before deciding... There are soooo many great boat options. The decision to go Hornbeck boiled down to weight, price and history of the company. I almost pulled the trigger on the Placid Spitfire... beautiful boat, felt sooo nice but a little heavier and pricier.

      I almost pulled the trigger on the Placid Spitfire. It was a beautiful boat but a little heavier and a little pricier. Either way I was spending my money with a small boat maker and not a bigger company like Swift.. although I loved their boats as well. There are so many great boat options out there!

      @@WhiteDogTrailCompany Well Swift is not that big but they are Canadian, they treated me really nice i was a real pain in the but to all of them and drove them crazy with zillions questions and held my wallet for 3 days but in the end got the boat; they are pricey, mine also has some scratches from the few times i have used it, it has also some spider web cracking in the white coating which i am in the process of fixing, already dremel out the channels and bought the repair kit for yet another $90.00 from them with shipping, the minute the boats are out there there will be scratches and scars, what I do like from Swift is that the champagne color coating on the bottom masks the inevitable scratches better than the Hornbeck which in my case mine came already scratched in the hull nobody took responsibility for it; I should have rejected the delivery but it happens that since the shipping was screwed up I had to drive from Las Vegas to California to pick it up and try to make it to a planned trip which is why I ordered in the first place, I never made in time back and the rest of the story you know; that white champagne on the swift adds couple pounds to it; Hornbeck is 19 pounds, Swift is 28, when I was shopping I almost got the carbon fire one from Hornbeck that is like 11 pounds, now the Sipfire has a great reputation, nobody I have read complaining about them everyone says they are worth every penny; if I had enough for another boat, that would be my go to but I would make a trip and test it as well, cost is a relieve if one is happy at the end of the transaction with what you got!

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  4 роки тому

      They're a kevlar\carbon woven together so they are actually fairly tough. You might get a little scratching but as long as you're not going full speed into rocks it isn't a big deal at all.

    I liked your adventure, it is nice to know you enjoyed your Hornbeck, I had a horrible experience with Josh over there and I am maybe the worst advocate they could have as I have lots negatives to say about their boats and their treatment which led me to buy a Swift last year, I still have my Hornbeck solo 12 feet used couple times aging in my garage because have not found who to sell it to and those crooks at Hornbeck never took it back. I have had many adventures with the Swift which is a more expensive boat but also far superior than the Hornbeck and about 8 pounds heavier, still light enough to do nice portaging with it. Hope to see more of your adventures!

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks... we had a great experience at Hornbeck with the whole crew. Unfortunate that you did not. Josh actually went out of his way to help us out when they ran into a materials issue and loaned us a boat for the entire summer! Check out the group Paddling in the Adirondacks on Facebook (if you are local). I cannot imagine your 12 foot Hornbeck will take long to sell. Very few people sell them used. I paddled Swift, Slipstream, Northstar, Hornbeck and Placid Boatworks before I bought. I did love the Swift but for me the weight made a big difference because I wanted to hike them in to remote ponds and wanted a balance between weight and performance. Glad you are enjoying the Swift though and we will definitely be doing more adventures :)

      White Dog Outdoors Very cool, to be happy is what matter, I live in Las Vegas and everything was done in the phone, if I was there in person I am sure the experience would have been different as I could have tried and pick the right boat instead of what they sent me after all our talks and me repeating the specs I needed and the intended usage, they messed up the shipping date with XPO then the boat came scratched, nobody took responsibility and Josh denied any wrongdoing and to accommodate a refund or return, his reputation and customer service went to the bottom with me but I would guess in person it would have been different for sure, he is the son in law of Hornbeck who is retire by now as my understanding, the company values Hornbeck worked too hard to built for all these years he throw them away with just that one sole sale and clearly caring more about the money and transaction than this customer satisfaction and closure; I guess he prefers that I think his company value is $2400 which is how much I lost in my dealing with them as the boat is worthless to me; it lack stability and it was made just not right for my requirements, I would not mind gone with another boat even if I had to pay a little more which is what I ended up doing with the Swift, but that is only done in person, when I bought the Swift I was a personal pin in the ass to Bill Swift for 3 days in Wisconsin at Canoecopia, I wanted to make sure I did not walk out with a boat that would not work again for me, so far I have not been let down but the Swift was $3000, it is very well made and though of, designed by David Jost who used also to do works for Hornbeck or so I read, in the end these type of transactions should be done in person to avoid what happened to me; a nightmare where so far to the date I lost the money I invested in that Hornbeck boat which sits almost new besides few minors scratches in my garage, in 50 years could be a museum collectors piece and maybe regain its value!

      It'll retain value for sure. They're very desirable boats. I think trying the any boat is important to make sure you get what you want. I paddled a ton of boats to figure out what I wanted.

      @@WhiteDogTrailCompany Interesting enough, the idea I had at the beginning was to buy 3 more boats from them for the whole family adventures one day, now if we go that route with Swift that would have been 12000+ to get a quality ones especially for my teens to ba able to portage with it, i wanted us to go visit Algonquin Park for a week or so, we still could do it renting but I am sure it would be one adventure that they would want to come back next year or in couple of years, at the time I ordered mine I even told Josh that as a possibility, he still could not make it right, the Hornbeck could be used by one of my kids as they weight half of my weight but it is so unstable inanything other than a pond that they do not like it either, my younger daughter paddled it once for few minutes and fell in the water getting in and out, that do not happens with the Swift for whatever reason, design is different, Swift has more surface contacting the water, it is also bigger couple feet so can not compare; you are right and now I know a little too late that when buying a canoe like this one can not do so blindly; they have to be paddled and tested, josh should have insisted in this point instead of assuring me the product would be fine under my requirements and weight which once received of course it was not; there is nothing like paddling; for the Swift in Canoecopia there was Joe Robinet there and he had some presentations on the 3 days of the event, one was in a pool with his Swift boat he let me get in so I could get the feel and even got couple strokes and the difference was felt instantly to the Hornbeck, mainly because the Swift supports better my weight, it floats differently and it does not rocks al the time; trust me, i really wanted to like the boat Josh sold me but that was my luck with him, zero. I would never sell that boat to a person that weights over 200 pounds; I was at the time of ordering weight at 217, I am still today at 214, which is way too much weight to make a light boat like that make you feel comfortable; you know how they ask you for your weight and intended usage; he was told I wanted a boat that could carry me and about 60 pounds worth of gear; he says these boats are rated to support those weights but in the water there is a different story as I sadly found out!
