My first automatic got its movement ruined and needed a what ended up being a lengthy amount of time before it got back from "service" after my first back country ski trip with it. It wasn’t a high end movement, but one noted for its ruggedness, yet it couldn’t handle the combination of shocks and cold. Meanwhile, my fathers Seiko quartz piece has endured 25+ years of back country skiing, hunting/shooting guns, and more or less being worn for everything except showering and swimming (as it is not a diver-style watch). This is why a GS 9F is a grail movement for me. You can trust a quartz, yet this one isn't a disposable cheap movement like 99.9% of quartz movements are. It’s built with care and can be serviced, hence can be a lifetime+ piece like a mechanical can be, while having the inate superiority of quartz. Thankfully, this even exists thanks to Grand Seiko. As far as I know it is a unique proposition.
FINALLY!!! Been waiting for someone to review these….think this will be my next watch purchase. I’m trying to build the perfect 2 piece collection for me, and this fits the bill to pair up with my Portofino Chrono
Timely video - I just realised this watch existed yesterday and was desperately looking for a decent overview! The blue dial has rocketed onto my list...
Personally, I prefer the previous SBGN003/005 GMT's. These new ones with the frameless date window and 4 o'clock crown look a bit off, but that's just personal taste. Nice to see them increase the WR to 200m instead of 100m, though.
Haha funnily enough I’m the opposite, I really like the 4 o clock date and broader hands, having said that I’m after a watch to compliment my Portofino so having a more ‘masculine’ design language with the chunkier hands and case is exactly what I’m after. Nice that weve got the choice now!
I reach for my 9F over my other watches pretty much every day. The movement is super accurate and durable, and only needs service like every 50 years. I wish they kept the needle sharp hands as in the previous model which get microscopically close to the indices. All in all, still glad GS is offering great watches with best in class finishing for under $3500.
I never thought I’d ever consider a quartz watch at this price point (£3k here in the UK) but I’m sorely tempted by this. It actually makes total sense to get a quartz GMT if genuinely being used for convenience during travel, especially if you’re just taking one watch. Put it on, set it up and that’s you done. The black is the one for me but I might need to see them both in person. Very nice.
The «Classic» 9F GS used to be one of my grails. But this might take its spot, as I might rather prefer something more sporty. Especially with this movement.
These are usually non-op models for reviews, which one can tell because the hands are set to the usual photogenic "10:10" 😂 I agree though, kinda weird to not use operational pieces for the review.
@@Hi_Scoops I work for a design agency based out of London that's head designer is Japanese. He laughed at your comment. It's just a sample unit without a mechanism, which is strange for a review unit for this watch, as the super accurate quartz mechanism is one of it's biggest draw cards
This review is lacking a comparison on how this series compares to the original series of GMT's, like SBGN003. Seems there are some interesting revisions/improvements, so focusing on that more than the 9F movement would make the video more attractive for knowledgeable viewers who already follow the brand.
I don't mind the date move much, but the lume only at the 3/6/9/12 indices instead of all (vs. SBGN003/5) is annoying, if not a deal breaker. I love the increase to 200m WR though. I'd love to see some more colors come out too. Thanks for the video look at these, as this is the first one I've encountered. These came out after the last time I was at the AD at the end of July.
Other factors aside, I liked the case design of SBGN003 because it was unique. SBGN027 is boring because it doesn't make a difference from the typical Grand Seiko case design. Perhaps Grand Seiko deliberately aimed at this point. The distinctive case-designed watch is likely to be re-released later, with high-bit movements and at a much higher price.
Very nice. I tend to prefer Citizen high end quartz, but I've always liked the SBGN003. I wish Citizen would add a quartz GMT to their The Citizen line.
I like the snow flake but when anyone buys a watch thay but it to tell the most accurate time so I may buy this time peace for its accuracy alone uk price is £2830
Compared it with the SBGN003 at a Grand Seiko boutique. The older model looks just better. My only gripe with the SBGN line is that, on some models and despite the claim, there are sections of the dial where the seconds hand does not perfectly align with the marker. The seller I was talking with had to acknowledge it. Bit of a shame for a €3400 timepiece.
This video really makes me scratch the GS itch :)) - I believe that Grand Seiko states that the movement is accurate cu -10, +10 seconds a year, so I think this means overall 20 seconds a year, not 10 as stated in the video.
how can they make GMT hand white same color on the black dial :) ahh these japanese ppl :) it shouuld've been yellow hand in black dial. like how they did correct on blue dial Red GMT hand this is the only reason i will go for blue dial.
Seiko Quartz is inferior to Citizen. For less money I can get better quartz watch from Citizen and for a fraction of the price I can get Christopher Ward with mechanical movement, ceramic bezel and similar case design.
This is a grand Seiko 9F quartz, not just Seiko quartz. Get your Citizen and Christopher Ward cause they make good watches. You can always upgrade to Grand Seiko when you learn more about watches and the level of craft and artistry involved.
These new ones are a bit of a let down. I own the SBGN003 and it looks and function's far better. 3 o'clock crown and date window which is framed and is colour matched on both SBGN003 and SBGN005. No longer the case on these new models. Also this new one only has lume on the hands and 3/6/9/12..... the 003 and 005 has lume on each of the indices. Also the 003 has an orange GMT hand, the new "slate" model doesn't this time.
I prefer no nonsense dials. You can stick to silly colors if you want. This is a true tool watch. It is perfect. Except maybe the lume, point scored by you Mr Critic.
@@arsonfireuk It depends what one values. It’s touted as the most accurate quartz watch in the world without the need for network time synchronization. Lange & Sohne watches would never beat that kind of accuracy, but their movements are beautiful. Some don’t like the spartan-ness of Lange & Sohne dials, but would that make them any less luxury? I personally don’t think so. More often than not, prices of all these watches are justified… unless you’re Hublot.
@@arsonfireuk Anyway, it shouldn’t matter if a watch is high end as long as you like it. The term ‘high end’, and what it means to you is too loosely defined and highly subjective. Some Cartier watches are quartz solarbeat, but many still consider the brand to be high end. Personally wouldn’t mind owning a Tank Must on quartz if it can last me 15 years without maintenance.

Yes. The entire video: why isn't it ticking??
@@DavidRon it’s weird. I have watched hundreds of watch reviews and never seen this. It was tripping me out the whole time!
He kept referring to it as a quartz watch when it's a spring drive. Maybe he thought he'd have to buy a battery for it to run.

I wish they would have put a cap in the middle like on the sbgn013. It gives it a cleaner look, more attention to detail.
This may become my first GS. But at 39mm and 46mm lug to lug, how would that look on my 19cms wrist? I’m concerned it might be a tad small….
