DM me to order one of these pens.
Batching out some "credit card" pens from @PennStateIndustries. I love this kit and everyone seems to love these small pocket or purse or shirt pocket size pens.
For these I'm using some splalted something or other. I don't know if it's maple or elm or sweet gum or what. I found this little glue up cuttoff discarded on the floor at a wood supplier I visited and they were kind enough to give it to me. Too small for most anything, even a typical pen blank, it's perfect for these tiny pens.

This whole video confuses me. Did you really use two types of super glue as a varnish? And what is so credit card about these pens? They just look like really bulbous pens, not related to credit cards whatsoever
Lol, good questions.
1. Yes, first layer of finish is a super thin formula. Dries fast, fills gaps, makes a solid base layer after 4 or 5 coats. Then 4 or 5 coats of a medium CA to make the final finish.
2. Credit card refers to the size of the pens. They are only as long as a credit card, so I make them bulbous so they are easy to hold.
@@harriswoodshop Thanks for the reply but I'll add another question. Doesn't super glue melt at high temperatures? Wouldn't it be better to use resin to seal?
@That that hasn't been my experience. CA is a standard, if not the standard finish for penmakers, which I'm new too. Wet sanding the CA finish is an art almost, but heat hasn't been an issue for me.
Beautiful
Thank you!!
Why didn't you use that miter gauge?
Oh man, that would have been a good idea.
I can't WAIT to put my students on a project like this. Subbed and liked based off this one video, stoked to see what else you do :) thank you sir! ❤ from the west coast of WA state!
You're going to have kids playing with crazy glue on a spinning lathe?! 👎🙄
@ROOKTABULA more than one way to skin a cat! I'm not going to have them lathe glue but a lathed pen is doable :) we have other finishes in the shop
Awesome! Thank you! These kits are super simple, easy to assemble, and budget friendly. Great starter kits. I like them for all those reasons, and because people seem to like small pens.
CA finish is definitely on the harder end of potential finishes. Perhaps you can at least demonstrate it for them. I've used several other systems, but for now that I know how, I definitely get the best results with a CA finish.
Oh ya, serious potential for a mess. Gotta turn the lathe speed all the way down and put up some shielding. And know how to apply to minimize disaster. I had CA all over my lathe the first couple times, but now I've got the system down.
