He wasn’t a real person, but his journey parallels those of historical figures. The education system failed me, so I was mostly shown videos of Black people as slaves and then given dates on when that started to change. But this show opened my eyes to what it could’ve looked like for an array of Black Americans living pre-Civil War-their genius, their passion, and their will to create change. Just like it reframes the mythos of Emily’s story, the show challenges some of the deep-seated lies we’ve been fed (some by omission) about Black people in America.

Adam, hi! It's so good to see you! How are you?
So, welcome to my beloved season 2! There's so much to tell about it. I want to start by saying that I'll base a lot of my comments on characters' psychology, because it's so damn good! Of course, there will always be facts.
In fact, I'd like to begin with one: Maggie bringing Emily's letters, poems and letter-poems back and forth between her and Sue is absolutely faithful to reality. Even if sometimes Emily and Sue met each other on that path "wide enough for two that love" to send and receive messages (that were written in little pieces of paper so that they could be hidden), a lot of other times it was Maggie to deliver them.
I'd like to move on and talk about Emily's health that I've previously discussed. As I've already wrote, she got sick easily and probably suffered from epilepsy as well. The eye problem we got to see in this episode was as real as it could get, so. She apparently suffered from iritis (an inflammation) and had to go to Boston to meet a certain Dr. Williams (yeah... the funny guy Edward yells against!).
Now, now... isn't Nobody interesting? Well, I can't say much about him for now, 'cause I'd be spoiling things that we'll be able to talk about more in later episodes. What I can tell you is that he is a clear reference to the poem "I'm Nobody! Who are you?". And if you've read the poem, then maybe you might even guess the main theme of this season.
Well, I dare say we all already know it, don't we? Shall I say it? Yes, I shall.
It's fame! This 10 episodes will focus on fame and of what it means to have or not have it.
Emily wasn't exactly fond of fame and she stated this in a poem by saying: "If fame belonged to me, I could not escape her.". It's not a coincidence that few writings of hers werwe published, for she preferred sharing her work with family and friends instead of newspapers.
But since that I've just introduced the topic, I'll skip EmiSue for a moment to talk about Samuel Bowles.
This man was not new to Susan even before she started hosting fancy parties. In fact, he had married an old friend of hers, Mary. But then he became chief editor for the Springfield Republican and therefore he caught Sue's eye. She was, in fact, interested in inviting to her salons people who were intellectually stimulating, like Bowles or Emerson.
What was his relationship with Emily though? We'll get to that later, don't worry.
Let's go back to Sue and her relationship with Emily. So, she's changed quite a bit, hasn't she? Gone is the girl who didn't even want a wedding dress, because she couldn't afford it. Susan Dickinson is an entirely different person and we can see it clearly from the very first moment. She seems a little bit full of herself, doesn't she?
Well, keep that in mind, my friends... this is going to be quite the journey!
Another thing to keep in mind is what has happened to her recently. She has lost the baby. A baby that was conceived in a terrifying way, but that to Sue still meant "Something", as she states. The loss has clearly done something to her. She's... in pain. No more and no less than that. She's in so much pain that she thinks reading Emily's poems is "Too much". And believe me, if you've read even a single poem of hers, you wouldn't doubt this statement.
However, we've seen those two in a great shape this episode. My God, Hailee and Ella's chemistry gives me chills every time! And just like Ella said, sometimes the kisses that don't happen are the most beautiful ones!

Historically, Sue and Austin married in 1856 and (as you'll understand later on this season) they're in 1859. So technically it's been 3 years since season 1, but in the show they talk like it's been only an year and a few months.

This season is a JOURNEY (I mean they all are, but this one... *wheeew!*). But you're totally right about Sue and Emily poems. It isn't just about the baby, but also just not being able to be with your soulmate anymore, yet reading all these poems Emily's writing, the only way Emily can share all the worlds in her mind she escapes to with Sue, where they're free to be together, yet Sue can't follow Emily there, as much as she wants to, as eager as Emily is to share it, coz for Emily those worlds in her mind are fully formed and tangible, in a way they can never be for Sue. And the more Sue reads, the more painful it is not to be able to just be with Emily.
So Sue's just packing all that emotion down, pushing it aside and numbing herself with frivolous shit, just so she can try not to feel what she's feeling.... It hurts, man! IT HURTS lol
After watching season one, I was like, I want things in s2 to be better for Sue. And all this season, I was like, PLEASE, CAN WE TALK ABOUT SUE BEING DEPRESSED AF!? I love Emily. But her and Austin are fairly classic rich kids, habitually focused on themselves. It takes quite a lot to snap their focus onto someone else, even someone they love.

@@WhyAreWeAwake Although it's true that she has depressive tendencies, I'm not sure I share the thought of Emily not understanding her. I believe (and this is my opinion only) that she does understand her too well. We can see it clearly, when Sue tells her that it wasn't even a baby and that it makes her silly to be sad, but Emily immediately replies that it was SOMETHING.
But the fact is that Sue doesn't want Emily to understand. She doesn't. Because they have a different way to cope with feelings. Emily wants to pour all her grief and sadness on paper. She wants it out of her system. However, Sue wants to hide them as much as possible. She makes a lot of effort in doing so, resulting in her changing and becoming shallow and almost cruel.
By the way, I love Sue with all of my heart and, really, this is my opinion and I might be wrong, of course.
@@martinathephantomess9992 I am basing my opinion more on season one to be honest. Emily seemed unable to process their class differences. Sue's family all died, and even Emily seemed focused on herself and unable to process that reality. Which I took to be class difference. That's not to sell short their love, which is epic. Just to say, I don't think if I were Sue that I could do the amount of spelling things out and, well, essentially being openly melodramatic that it would take to always be recognized. I love Emily and Sue both! No shade. Austin... well... not so much tbh.

Once again, I believe that Emily not understanding the weight of loss for Sue was not caused by her wealth.
Emily knows Death very well. She's lost people since she was very young (like her childhood best friend) and she lived for years in front of a cemetery... and that's why she became fascinated with it. Death is a friend to her, a companion. This is why, until she lost someone truly important (Ben), she could never grasp the concept of Death as something bad.
Once again, I think that they differ on the way they see things. Like they see different shades of the same colour.
As I said, I love Sue with all of my heart. She's my favourite character, so I'm not judging her for not being able to speak what she has in her heart.
I'm quite like her, in this aspect. I tend to swallow everything and then I explode. It's human and it's normal... but it can become unhealthy or toxic (pardon the strong word, but it's the best one I can use to express the concept).
With that being said, I'm not of course trying to be blind about the fact that Emily was privileged. I'm aware that she was. But she knows grief incredibly well. If you've watched season 3, then you can understand what I'm referring to

idk how to describe it... but having to receive a poem about you that makes you feel things is alot...
I have this close friend of mine that made me a poem and it's really beautiful, then I also asked her to answer a simple psychological question (abt who'd u describe as the sky,sun,moon,sea,winter,rain etc.) and she made it all me in a very sweet & beautiful long message... i've been developing some unsure feelings before she even made those such sweet poems, but I never really do anything about those said feelings, i'm demisexual and she's my confidant, cuz I do believe i luv her platonicly and I intend to stay that way since I think it would be unfair to like her romantically... it would be fair when I had more confidant and realize what it really means, so I really feel for season 2 Sue, It's hard to get these sweet poems when you know you can't have them.
