Microphone Battle: Shure MV7 vs Rode PodMic

  • I've got two fantastic microphones to pin against each other today. The Shure MV7 and the Rode PodMic. Why the battle, you ask? Well, these babies are essentially cut from the same cloth. They both offer the versatility of XLR and USB connections, and the price point is basically the same. Shure and Rode are both very well known in the microphone industry, and I felt like it was worthy of a good ol’ fashioned rumble!
    Before I declare any favourites, I want to make it clear that what you're about to hear is my personal opinion and specific to my voice. Your voice will have different tonality, different inflection and different frequency “hot spots”, so use this as a guide.
    We start with some tricky sounds like those with heavy P's and B's to see how they handle plosives. I even treat you to a bit of singing because, hey, microphones are often used for that purpose, and I'm a singer myself.
    I read a passage from Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" to see how well these microphones fare for voiceovers and audiobook narration. These are crucial considerations, especially if you're a content creator.

    I am not familiar with the MV7, but the PodMic USB sound can be adjusted via the RØDE software, so you can easily add bass boost or a high frequency lift or the opposite. The PodMic USB does all these changes in its internal high quality DSP inside the unit, without taxing the computer's cpu (on USB only, not XLR). This is a very significant benefit as you can tailor it to your voice and taste and it will remain so even if you plug it into a different computer.

      I'm so pleased. Yes the Rode PodMic will absolutely handle your plosives much better too when speaking Spanish. There are a lot of heavy "p" and "s" sounds in the Spanish language, and the Shure MV7 doesn't seem to handle them quite as well as the Rode Podmic does. Have fun with it and best of luck!

    With your voice the Rode does sound better, a little more crisp. I also noticed that the mv7 was picking up more of your breathing than the rode, would a different windshield fix that?
    I have a male deeper voice, singing wise I come in as a bass singer so would you think the Shure is better suited for male and deeper voices vs the Rode as I also heard you have the gain almost at max for the Rode.
    anyway great video and thank for the match up. Would be interesting to see how a blue yeti pro would do against these two.

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  3 місяці тому

      Good ear there! Yes - the MV7 picks up a lot more of the breathing noises, and it's mostly because of the foam windshield that it ships with. It really is quite atrocious quality. The MV7 will pick up more of your bass tones than the PodMic will. If you went with the MV7, I'd recommend buying a Shure SM7B foam as I know that fits on the MV7 and is much better quality. There isn't a good option on Amazon. I'd recommend going straight to Shure if you want to go in that direction: www.shure.com/en-US/products/accessories/rk345?variant=RK345

    So glad you did this review, thank you! I have higher frequency voice and i did notice in my tutorial recording that i sound muffled at times with the mv7. I do like a bit of richness tho but I can’t find a clarity and warmth balance with the shure. I think I have to get this mic, I love the sound of it.

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah the Shure MV7 definitely has a more muffled tone to it doesn't it! It's nicely suited to male voices I think, or those with more richness in the bottom end - but for female voices it's not my favourite.

    Lower register voices like mine sound spectacular for podcasts and voiceover work. Hitching one of those on to my field recorder is amazing. Clarity can be fixed in post. 😅
    I will check the PodMic though. Cheers! Great channel.

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  8 місяців тому

      100% - I did a review of the Shure by itself, and tested with a male voice - it does sound much nicer for the lower register. And it's nice to have too much bass than too little also, because you can reduce bass in post - but it's hard to add it back in if you don't have it to begin with. Link to the review with the male vocals in there too if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/FeLcWAJT_N8/v-deo.html Glad you're enjoying the mic!

  • @thematthewbliss
    @thematthewbliss 9 місяців тому +6

    The clarity of the Podmic on your voice is spectacular. The MV7 was definitely a bit muddy, and from my experience with a deeper voice I found the MV7X sounded hot and compressed with just the raw signal. Switched to an RE320 and am VERY happy with the change!

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  9 місяців тому +1

      Oooooo I haven't tried the RE320! I'll have to add that one to my list. I agree re: the MV7X also. It also doesn't quite make sense to me that the MV7X is needed in the market, because the MV7 has both inputs. I've got some SE Microphones on my hit list too as I love the SE brand.

    • @thematthewbliss
      @thematthewbliss 9 місяців тому +1

      @@bambymedia The MV7X is a fair bit cheaper than the MV7, but you need an audio interface so it's probably only for ppl already with XLR mics. Many have said the XLR on the MV7 wasn't very good too...

    • @milesian1
      @milesian1 7 місяців тому +1

      I developed a serious mic addiction and acquired over a dozen mics. One of them was the RE320. With time, it’s separated itself from the rest of my dynamic mics, and I’m now thinking of it as my forever mic.
      My wife has a TLM103, and it’s the best I’ve ever tried. But in a mostly untreated space I prefer the isolation of a dynamic.

    • @thematthewbliss
      @thematthewbliss 7 місяців тому +1

      @@milesian1 Both are top choicies, but of course everyone should take this advice with a grain of salt - test it for yourselves and see if that's right for you. 😊
      EDIT: I'm not correcting "choicies" because I like how that word sounds.

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  7 місяців тому +1

      The TLM103 is absolutely beautiful. Big fan of the Neumann family of microphones, but you're right - for a condenser microphone to work well it needs to be in a more controlled audio environment. It's a stunning microphone for vocals. One of my favourites. For untreated spaces a dynamic microphone is going to work better in most situations. I've got a few fantastic SE microphones that I'm reviewing shortly that have become new staples here at Bamby Media.

      Yay! Yeah I felt like I was filling a hole here in this space. Lots of male voices using microphones, but not a lot of female voices (and they're vastly different), so it's nice that you got value out of it. Hopefully you've picked a winner for yourself!

    Great comparison ! I was thinking of these mics or a 4 way podcast set up. I also have an Shure SMB-7 for my own use. I'm surprised to hear that the MV7 has more plosives. (The SMB-7 does a great job of blocking plosives). The PodMic is a thinner, clear sound to me. The MV7 to me is warmer, richer, fuller. Agree with you that the talent should test their own voice to each mic to be sure, or, get a review like this to reveal insights. Good job with practical info!

    • @bambymedia
      @bambymedia  8 місяців тому

      Ah yes - I have the Shure SM7B too - the foam pop filter on that microphone is of a much higher quality (thicker etc) than the MV7 version. I was surprised with the plosives too. It's not too bad if you make sure you have it off axis. I've got a dedicated Shure MV7 review coming out in the next couple of weeks where I did some comparisons with on axis vs off axis. It's definitely got a fuller bottom end than the Rode Podmic does. I'm glad you enjoyed the comparison. I enjoy doing them!

    • @bambymedia

      No unfortunately not - the mic input on a camera is normally a headphone jack. The USB microphones don't use that jack. • @bambymedia

      These wouldn't be my first choice for guitar or singing as they don't have enough depth in the sound to pull the best sound for those formats. I'd need to know a little bit about what your recording environment is like and the type of guitar you're wanting to record, and whether the voice is deeper or higher pitched to give you a proper recommendation for singing/guitar purposes.
