    FYI the answer to his very simple 3 part question about Dune is:
    1. Shai-hulud
    2. a Thumper
    3. The water of life

    One of the best speeches I've seen in a long time. It was amazing how he shifted from the light comedy to the insight about jock and nerd presidencies.

    I just became a John Hodgman fan... what he just did their was AMAZING. He took liberals view of Obama, people who say he's not delivering the change he spoke about in the campaign and basically saying Change takes time, this is the beginning, not the end of the change, and to calm the fuck down and give the man a chance LOL. *Applauds* Go John Hodgman!!!

    by definition, a nerd is someone who is knowledgeable in a field that isn't sports. so yes, in order to be a nerd, you must actually be bright.
    also, nerd is a positive term in the majority of society's current consciousness (just as planned) so being a nerd requires to to actually have a good set of morals.
    someone who doesn't fit the second set of requirements is called an "asshole" and someone who doesn't fit the first set is not called a nerd.

    Hodgman writes and performs a lot of radio comedy. For whatever reason, writers of radio comedy are generally called "humorists." For example, Garrison Keillor refers to himself as the "world's tallest radio humorist."

  • @maryah43

    how do they get the video longer than 10 mins?

  • @AurosHarman
    @AurosHarman 15 років тому

    @SomeNofA - Well, he was also referring to the fact that a bunch of the founders were Deists -- they believed that G*d set the world in motion, and then declined to intervene to help anyone out after that. Similarly, it's a DM's job to create the world and administer the rules impartially, rather than providing information (prophecy) or help (miracles) to the Player Characters.

    Smart and funny. It's about time a US president embodies that, and Hodgman nicely reflected that. Also I must say it's disturbing that so many use these comments as a way to sling verbal poison. Not smart, and not funny. Our country will not survive nor compete unless intellect is both honored and valued.

    I've read Dune a few times over the years but not for a long time. Did not get #1...
    But #3 the very first thing that came to mind was the Truthsayer drug. Before I go back and read it again is that another name, does that count?
