Probably hard to imagine for the younger generation: if you grew up in the 1970s or 1980, the "Year 2000" had a magical ring to its name. Futuristic, new era, a sci-fi world. On the morning of 1st January 2000, I jokingly asked a friend "Where are the spaceships they promised us back then?".
Actually, the new millennium started on January 1, 2001. The year 2000 was still part of the 2nd millennium. 2001 however was the first year of our current millennium (3rd)
I was 12 when my family and I spent more than four hours huddled on London Bridge in the freezing cold waiting for the show to begin. It's a shame this American reporter didn't get to see the fireworks from where I was standing: having stared longingly at the barge between us and Blackfriars Bridge for hours with such anticipation and then, all of a sudden, it came to life and lit up the skies above us. Gladly we got there early enough that we secured a place right by the water-side, so no one was in front of us. All I can say is that I imagine this was what a star going supernova must look like. I later found out that my older sister, whom was stood behind me, had to hold me up because I was leaning back so far to take in all the light above me.
I was a bus driver on New Year's Eve, 1999. I'll never forget, I was in the middle of taking a break when the clock struck midnight. I glanced through the front door of a club to see across the room at the people playing poker machines. Staring at the screens, while all the cheering and singing went on nearby. Same as it ever was.
This makes me feel so old. I watched it alone as a 19 year old; seems like yesterday. I just can't believe it was 20 years ago. A scary thought because in another 20 years I'll be nearly 60. 😬 You just don't believe it when you're young, but it's real - time speeds up dramatically.
yeah, well known times goes quicker or seems to go quicker as you age. something to do with doing the same old rubbish everyday and not having enough new experiences
@@circle2867 it's because time feels quicker because you've experienced more time passing, when you're ten years old, you've only existed for ten years, you've only experienced ten years of time, felt like a lifetime right? @Proscriptus it all links to the fact that the year 0 AD never existed so when it was 1 BC, it immediately switched to 1 AD but it also bugs me when people keep correcting me saying "OMG LIKE THE NEW MILLENNIUM STARTED IN 2001, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT". yes ik that the 21st century didn't start until 2001 but just let us have some fun...
Technically everyone born in 2000 were alive during the only change of millennia, becasue it happens at the end of the year in December 31st. So the next millenium will star 01/01/3001
@@forest3064 There was nothing right or wrong to celebrate the new millennium on January 1st 2000. Everyone on the planet celebrated it, because round numbers are much easier to follow. And the same is being debated about decades, you can look it up I'm not even kidding.
I was there, between Big Ben and the bridge... I had just turned 18 (three weeks before). Me and my best mate at the time went down to London on the train and went to a few bars.... We almost didn't make it to the fireworks because we were that drunk haha. Good times.....
I was 17 years old and from America. I was watching the new year millennum celebration being celebrated from around the world on TV. I remember watching celebrations from Paris, France and London, England and thinking oh its getting closer to the east coast of America but we had several hours to go. I went to a family friend's new years eve party with my parents. We watched the ball drop in Times Square in NYC on TV with everyone at the party. We came home from the party and called my Aunt who lives on the west coast of the U.S. and wished her a happy new year and new millennium. We then told her, "well the power grid didn't go out. We still have power." Remember the Y2K scare?
im listening to this in low volume, never been in London but the Big Ben's bell really gives me shivers through the body whilst people celebrate new millenia . this is fantastique
I’m here cuz it’s gonna be the new year 2020 in approx 8 hours and I’m not ready to see this decade end. Must of been something to see the freaking millenium end.
This is one of my earliest memories, I was near Tower Bridge during this event with my parents and the rest of my family, I was only like 4 years old at the time and vividly remember climbing up a tree when all the fireworks went off. I will be turning 25 tomorrow, time sure does fly right on by.
Well, for two good reasons: The main one being that UA-cam didn't exist in 1999, and the other being that I just hadn't gotten around to transferring it from the VHS tape until 2009, so on the 10th anniversary of Y2K, I figured it would be a good time to put it here. Please check my list for other clips of that night, including several U.S. time zones. thanks!
This is great to see this. I remember they thought the computers would go down as we went into 2000. Thanks for the share. Happy New year 2020 which is also a drink 🎈 😂
Every year especially since the Olympics in London we seem to expect and get better and more explosive firework displays. The people who choreograph them are amazing.
I was standing on Westminster bridge, and i have to say it was amazing! the atmosphere, the fireworks! oh and thanks to the random guy who gave us a bottle of champers! happy new year everyone!!! .)
I was born in 1994 and don’t remember the excitement of coming into the new millennium but now I’m older I can imagine how exciting it would have felt, imagine getting to reach the year 3000
It was like this outside my window all along the horizon, the sky was full of thousands of fireworks! I remember thinking to myself "so this is what 2000 looks like"!
Cannot believe that this was twenty years ago! I was 10 in 1999, and the year 2000 was so special at the time, now we are fast approaching 2020! I feel sad that time has past so fast
I remember this, I was only 4 at the time but welcoming in the New Millennium was amazing....17 years later I own a Millennium Experience Banner that was on display at the dome.
Mohammad Jaafar You were technically still born in the 20th century, as we started at 1 AD 1 AD to 2001 AD is a millennium. At least you got to be alive for that. :)
Yup , at NYE '99 you where royally beaten by Liverpool, New York and Valparaiso (Chile)... Always before the advent of silent fireworks, the Chilean port played well above their league.
I was only 3 when this happened! I lived in Oxford at the time, and I can vaguely remember standing on the main bridge above Osney to see the fireworks the city had put up.
My older cousin was a junior in high school in 1999, after Christmas break, going back to school in the year 2000 was just different, unimaginable he told me, ten years before 2000 he was a 90s kid, now the threshold of his adulthood was set in the new millennium. I still ask him about and it's like listening to something historical, forbidden in a way.
I was five years old at the time and we had a huge family party at my Grandparents' house. I remember the tv was on live from London and I distinctly remember the shot of the Millennium Dome (now the O2) from above. Life seemed nicer then, not least because I was a young child lol :)
I remember watching this... damn it's been 20 years! Makes me feel old now lol good luck to those who turn 20 this year ;) make the most of it as your early 20s are the best years you will ever have! Makes me wish that I was only turning 20 this year lol Dont know why but I like these fireworks displays back then!
Oh my god, I was only 5 YEARS OLD, when the millennium finally arrived here in the UK!! 😃 I actually can't remember much of the millennium, but I know it happened! 😁 On New Year's Eve, 1999, people were massively energised with excitement. Then, when the clock struck midnight, BANG! _Celebrate good times, COME ON!_ 😅 But, while everybody around the world partied the night away, me & my sibbies were all fast asleep in our beddy-byes, while Mum & Dad had a lovely Thai curry & a laugh all 2 THEMSELVES, APPARENTLY!! 😲 Now, THAT'S not bloody fair at all, IS IT!!?? 😂 That's what Mum & Dad told me, back in 2010, anyway! 😅 LOL Best of luck, take care & enjoy yourselves, everybody! Always celebrate the good times & forgot about the bad times! _Ooh yeah_ (Madonna, in the song "Holiday") 😅 Stay positive! Peace out! 😁✌
I was stood on Westminster bridge the whole of this very evening. Physically staring up at Big Ben as those hands turned round into a new millennium. It was cold, we were kettled, there were no toilets, it was a huge wait but it was so worth it to be there. I still tell my kids about it every year!
Very nice! Plus, for the courtesy of you and others who view this, the preliminary music that precedes the striking of the big bell itself is the Westminster chime and there are actually words for it. They are below if you want to read them while listening or sing along and it begins at the 2:39 mark. Lord, through this hour, be Thou our guide. So, by Thy power, no foot shall slide. These words are based on Psalm 37:23-24, where David the psalmist declares this: The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in His way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand.

Proscriptus I totally agree with u.
@KillMii So they say. Meaning that this new millennium didn't kick in 'til then.
@Proscriptus Exactly! It was a new century, and that was a bloody landmark enough.
Me: is alive during the only change of millennia in hundreds of generations, but to little to remember...
Technically everyone born in 2000 were alive during the only change of millennia, becasue it happens at the end of the year in December 31st. So the next millenium will star 01/01/3001
@Reckoning but it wasn't really a new beginning....so....
Wolverine X But it kinda was so...
@@elliotfallows6814 hmmm...not really...why would you say so. What happened in your opinion, to make it a new beginning?
@@forest3064 There was nothing right or wrong to celebrate the new millennium on January 1st 2000.
Everyone on the planet celebrated it, because round numbers are much easier to follow.
And the same is being debated about decades, you can look it up I'm not even kidding.

I was there, between Big Ben and the bridge... I had just turned 18 (three weeks before).
Me and my best mate at the time went down to London on the train and went to a few bars.... We almost didn't make it to the fireworks because we were that drunk haha. Good times.....
Woah you must be like 35!

Celebrating the new millennium makes all other New Year's celebrations look like birthday parties in comparison.
Why has UA-cam recommended this to me exactly 20 years after this happened and 20 years after it was posted?
@@Rivais_Tea must have been a typo think I meant to say 10 years
Excellent video. Brings back amazing memories! Thanks for putting it on here.

I watched this live 20 years ago, and it feels like yesterday 😨. Can’t quite believe how fast the time is going
Well, for two good reasons:
The main one being that UA-cam didn't exist in 1999, and the other being that I just hadn't gotten around to transferring it from the VHS tape until 2009, so on the 10th anniversary of Y2K, I figured it would be a good time to put it here.

Lord, through this hour,
be Thou our guide.
So, by Thy power,
no foot shall slide.
These words are based on Psalm 37:23-24, where David the psalmist declares this:
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in His way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand.
