Tipene - Kupe (Official Music Video)

The track itself is an ode to Kupe - Master navigator from Tahiti who discovered Aotearoa around 900AD. One of the stories has it he was chasing Te Wheke o Muturangi(Octopus) who was eating all the fish back in Tahiti. Kupe chased Te Wheke right across the pacific on a waka named Matahourua belonging to the Wahine on board named Kuramarotini. In one of our origin stories Kuramarotini is credited with the naming of Aotearoa.
The visual for ‘Kupe’ is a story about a gifted young architect. She is channeling the spirit of her ancestors through her creativity. She is a direct descendent of Kupe.
The video is entirely hand drawn and has a more abstract take on a futuristic Aotearoa; where there a turbo/street canoes and a cityscape of traditional statues and marae-turned mansions. Where the world view is Maori, for this is Aotearoa our home and place of belonging. It is representative of Matariki in that it honours our history while looking ahead to a prosperous future where Maori are excelling and determining our own TINO RANGATIRATANGA
