Iwata Custom Micron Takumi Review

- I purchased this airbrush a few days ago and wanted to post a short review of it for anyone who might be interested. The Iwata Micron Takumi is a fantastic side feed detail airbrush. The trigger is extremely close to the nozzle, so it is great for getting close for high detail. So far I'm very pleased with it. Links for this airbrush and similar airbrushes are below. Thanks for watching!

Finally.... the Takumi!! I look forward to your next video.
Thanks man!
Would you mind if I ask you a question? If you could only afford one micron which one would it be? The takumi seems nice because the cup isn't in the way but the cup seems like it would be more difficult to clean out in between colors. The cm-b seems nice, is it just a smaller cm-c plus? I've been really enjoying your videos, do you have an instagram?
Thanks so much! If I had to purchase only one, I would go with the cm takumi. The close trigger is what makes it so special to me. It's so comfortable to work with. I actually find a side cup easier to clean, because you can pop it off and rinse it off under the sink if you need too. Nice to have the option to replace the cup with a new one if needed as well. With that said, I still love my cm-b (small cup version). Can't go wrong with any of the microns.
I have an original Custom micron SB. How does this compare in weight/ size?? Is it lighter or same? . Also what if I just add a soft spring to mine. Would I need another $450 iwata?
If I had a micron SB, I wouldn't buy a takumi. They are too similar, but that's just me.
Please make a video in İwata Custom Micron Cm-sb
Do a review on a h&s infinity cr plus. I have one and I have some problems with it like you. I look forward for you talking about your experience with it.
It'll be up in a few days. Great airbrush, but I always have trouble with the trigger control. It tends to clog and spit more than any of the others.
@@theartworkshop Yes it's the same for me. It was my first airbrush and it didn't spray like it should. I also made it worse, because I didn't have the experience with cleaning an airbrush and thinning the paint. I will buy replacement parts and seals and see how it will spray after that.
@@ItsAYGIbaby Good paint reduction is the key. Go with either golden fluid acrylics, createx illustration or wicked colors, or com-art paint. Those are the best imo. Thin with distilled water to the consistency of whole milk. Hope this helps.
@@theartworkshop Thanks. I gained experience now and it's a lot easier. I use createx wicked and illustration colors and 4011 createx reducer.
Thanks for the review. I have a few CM guns from years ago. I wonder what is the advantage of Takumi? Is it worth the money if you have other CM already.
Thanks! Since I have a CM-B as well, I don't see any difference between the two (besides the side cup & closer trigger). I'd only recommend it if you want a side feed or a new airbrush, otherwise it's exactly the same as the other microns to me. It's very nice, but I don't see any advantages over my old micron.
how much shorter is it exactly from tip to air stem compared to a regular micron? 5mm? 10mm?
I'm not quite sure. I haven't measured them to compare.
i picked one up the other day £391, due to box damage. the card box had slight dmg to it. i already have the CM SB V2 as my work horse but i collect air brushes so its in my collection, will also buy the takumi eclipse in time. i think the takumi CM SB should have had a smaller cup.
great price! I read that Iwata is making new smaller cups for the takumi in the next few months. I'll probably buy it.
I'm with you on the eclipse takumi. I'll be picking that up someday for sure.
How do you like the micron? I’m deciding between the tukami micron & eclipse hp cb 😅
Finally a review of the iwata takumi. Now i wanna see a comparison between the gsi creos 771 and takumi cm. Which one do you think is better?
You got it. I'll make a video comparing the two within the next few weeks. The spray pattern between the two is nearly identical, with a slight edge going to the takumi. As of right now, I prefer the gravity fed cup of the creos 771 and the CM-B over the takumi, but that might change.
@@theartworkshop thanks. I already subscribed. Can’t wait for the comparison video. Thanks!
@@theartworkshop how about the infinity? Which one do you think is better? Cmb? Takumi? Infinity or gsi creos? Your review is simple and detailed and can’t wait for your new video. Im planning to get other fine detail brush but i already have a creos. I just wanna try other brushes. Lol. Goodluck on your yt channel
@@myko.lektion880 Infinity is okay. I have 2 of them. Sprays a nice thin line, but the trigger control isn't that great. I'll make a video comparing all the detail brushes. Much more on airbrushes to come!
@@theartworkshop thanks ill be waiting. I have the gsi creos 771. But i kinda want to get another one. I was thinking cmb, takumi micron. Or maybe a takumi eclipse. Anyway. I think it would be wise to wait for your review before i buy. Thanks!
Hey! Love your videos. I’ve been meaning to tell you that I also bought a Takumi, and like you, I thought that the cup was a little too big. So I paid the extra $46 for the smaller (3ml) cup. Then later, I saw a video that showed that the cups for the Iwata Neo also fits the Takumi!! Ahh! Oh well. The smaller Neo cup doesn’t have a lid though. But I know you have a Neo so I thought you would be happy to know that you already have a smaller cup that will work.
thanks man! I'm addicted to this airbrush at this point. I've been using the smaller cup from my neo for the past few months! it's been great and fits the takumi perfectly. You'll see me using it in all my recent painting tutorials.
Hello! I am painting miniatures and started with a beginner brush (Evolution Silverline). But it seems not good enough for small details. Now I am thinking about a CM but I can't decide between a CM-B2 oder a Takumi. Which one is easier to clean? Which allows faster color changes? Could you give some advice? Which one would be better for mini painting?

Do you think there is a difference in performance between Custom Micron CM-SB and Micron Takumi?
To me they were exactly the same in performance. I'd be very happy with either
@@theartworkshop Thank you!
How do you clean your airbrush without taking the nozzle off? I get worried about paint being trapped there even with flushing out with thinner, but taking the nozzle off is problematic because i have to seal the threads again.
I flush out the paint after every use with createx 4012 reducer first and then with distilled water and make sure I see zero color left. I like to leave some water in the airbrush cup to prevent anything from drying.
I only remove the nozzle when there is something very wrong with the airbrush and I have no choice.
I think you would be able to lower the psi do to the orifice seating in the bottom I would think. I think the new design makes it a top feed brush. Please let us know what your thoughts are. I also heard that the trigger feels wobbly. Thanks for the unbound and short review!
Yes, there is some wobble in the trigger but not bad. In the manual, they recommend spraying at 12-15psi. It works perfectly at lower psi levels, even down to 10. Just need to thin the paint accordingly.
@@theartworkshop the more I see this reviews the more I think I will need one😁not want one. Thanks 😊
@@coolkids2064 haha I know the feeling. After a few months of owning it, I'd have to say I recommend it. It's a fantastic airbrush.
@@theartworkshop haha thanks brother
Thanks for the video. I use the CM-SB for detailing model aircraft. I like the look of the gravity cup on the Takumi. Can I use this gravity cup setup on my CM-SB? Cheers.
I love the SB- a true classic airbrush. Yes, according to Iwata's website the cups between the CM-SB and the Takumi are interchangeable. If you look at airbrush parts on the Iwata website, they have the new cups although a bit overpriced imo.
Big brother which one it’s the different between iwata cm sb and Takumi
How is this different from a CM-SB
Your voice is like an asmr its giving me tingles
Have you tried any olympos? I would like to see you review one lol. Kinda hard to get an olympos tho. Thanks
No, but I would love to! The Olympus is the original micron from what I've heard. They are just too difficult to find and you'd probably never find replacement parts. If I come across one for a decent price, I'll def make a review.
@@theartworkshop i saw one for 300usd. Looks almost brand new. Not really sure if i want it because i already have a gsi creos 771.
@@myko.lektion880 Not a bad price, but I feel like the 771 and the micron are identical. I'd bet the Olympus is similar. I'd just stick the the creos.
@@theartworkshop yea. Creos is cheaper too.
@@theartworkshop i have a olympos spb custom for sale. It is 0.18 mm with low trigger. 250 usd. If you are interested lol. Im from cali
Besides the price, is there any reason a beginner might want to stay away from aibrushes like this and rather get a different, possibly cheaper one?
yeah, the small nozzle and needle makes it pretty unforgiving and prone to clogs. You need to properly reduce your paint (which is easy to do) and use a good airbrush paint. The needle and nozzle are also super easy to break. Any beginner can start with a detail brush like a micron though. Just need to be careful and use the right paint.
@@theartworkshop Thanks for taking your time answering, I'd probably have a hundred questions more... don't worry! xD
I have a ? For you, will the micron cm-b solid handle fit on the micron Takumi ?
Thanks in advance
just checked for you and yes the cm-b handle fits great on the micron takumi body. The takumi's needle is short than the normal micon.
@The Art Workshop I really appreciate it. I prefer a solid handle over a cut out. Thanks again
I have the older custom micron side feed - this newer one looks just like it - just with a different side feed cup. Wondering if I can “convert” my current set up to a “Takumi” just by changing the cup?
Edit: ok this question was answered below. I just ordered from Merriartist rather than Iwata direct. The difference is $56.32 (with shipping) vs $82.45 with shipping!!
The CM-SB and Takumi are exactly the same brush body - just a different cup. Based on the description on the website and my own experience with the CM-SB - a cup redesign really needed to be done.
The bodies are not the same. The takumi is shorter. The distance from the trigger to the air cap is shorter.
