I wish they made more references to the MTM characters like Murray, Lou Ted etc.

Besides the slightly awkward daughter relationships, I really love how Rhoda is Rhoda and how Mary is Mary. And how much Mary is still all about the integrity of the news. The dog chasing is stupid, but her fighting for the story cool

I can understand that some of the actors from The MTM Show & from Rhoda were unavailable for this movie & some were deceased. But I'm surprised that they don't at least get mentioned.
The only past that Mary & Rhoda ever talk about are the previous 20 years. Not realistic that they didn't laugh & talk about the years before that. The closest we got is when Mary mentioned in her job interview that she used to work in Minneapolis.

"We're nowhere, we're nowhere, we're vacant, droop, droop..."
Ah yes, that "heroine chic" aestetic of the 90's. Influenced by the late 70's punk movement. Brings to mind the song "Pretty Vacant" by the Sex Pistols. And the model was more worried that muffins were addictive! 😆 It's sad, really. If you don't laugh, you'll cry. Such great social commentary!

They didn't NEED to make them both moms. As if everyone was going to feel saddened by the fact that they never had children. What made The MTM show a succes was showing women that they didn't need to be married with kids to be complete. Not only do they give them daughters, but they're so unlikeable! Badly done. Very depressing movie. They shouldn't have done it.

No, they didn't NEED to make them both moms...but they also didn't NEED to make one of them, or both of them, NOT moms. What a bizarre complaint. This TV movie is sweet because it's a reunion of Mary and Rhoda. It's certainly no piece of high art, or even anything approaching the stature of The MTM Show or Rhoda, but who really expected a 2000 TV movie to meet that standard?
The main thrust of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda was that women didn't NEED men, at any given specific point in their lives, to feel like complete human beings..the point was NOT that they didn't WANT men or families. To the contrary, Mary dated and Rhoda was married for a time (and according to this mediocre TV movie, they both married later and had children). Only a deranged "modern" "feminist" could find this somehow existentially threatening.
Healthy women are not fundamentally threatened by the prospect of motherhood, only disturbed, unhappy women are. Even with the possibility that their kids might be ungrateful wretches.

Kay2be2mr Agree! I thought this was depressing, and was hoping the movie would get better. The Daughters seem like absolute Brats, and I wish they weren't even in the movie.

So you just wanted her to never change anything about her life? Because she was single in the show meant she always had to remain single? So all women should settle at 18 and be married before 25 or they should just stay single??? Thats unrealistic lol. Many young woman at 25-35 are single especially now and its OK... They will find someone if they choose to ppl act like you should have a man once you become an adult and its not true. Education and finding yourself should come first. I think its sad when ppl think once you hit your late 20s you should already be in a serious relationship or be planning a wedding. You're just looking at the show and seeing that she never had a bf on there so assume her character wasn't married. And so what thers many young woman who are single and doing just fine. Doesnt mean they will always be single or that they enjoy being single. going by what you saw. Its saying that she traded in her life got married and had her after. Ppl do change their minds. Back in the 60s and even 70s being married was something everyone did young and have a kid too or at least be married. But its not that way anymore... Although if they wanted to make this more realistic then they should've showed her getting married on the spinoff... Or at least on the later episodes of the show. Maybe that's what you meant. Because when you watch the show it doesn't add up. Yes she could've had her after and got married but that wasnt mentioned in the show so ppl aren't going to comprehend that.

The network refused the original script because the network thought ratings would be low without young demographic being included to watch so they made both have daughters

@@ErnieFairchild1 The fact that you felt the need to call me unhealthy, deranged, disturbed, and a feminist as if it was a dirty word for disagreeing about a fictional movie, tells me all I need to know about the type of man you are. This is about representation. I for example love men. Except the ones who say horrible things about women when they disagree with them, like you. All I meant was that it would've been wonderful to have used Mary or Rhoda (or both) to show fans of the original show that you can have a fulfilling life even without being married or with kids. Representation is important. Most shows have happily married moms on them, so for you to get so angry about this one tv movie to be different, truly is a bizarre complaint to have. Also I don't know what you think a "modern" or "traditional" feminist is, but allow me to school you. A feminist is someone who believes that women should be offered the same opportunities and benefits that men have, and be able to choose for herself whether to accept those opportunities and benefits. If she chooses to be a stay at home mom, then that's also a wonderful thing, so long as it was her choice to make. Only an unhealthy, deranged, disturbed, woman bashing sexist would believe otherwise. Good day to you sir.

I love the characters of Mary and Rhoda and the actresses who play them but I do not like this TV film. It's not like the TV show, it reminds me of when they did the Brady Bunch movies and the focus was the contrast in how friendly the characters are in the cold, impersonal cynical world of today. I wish it was the same treatment as the TV show with cameos of the original gang. =-/
