You're a very brave man grinding the nib on a Lamy 2000. The microscope is very impressive for the price. Perhaps, in order to maintain stability, it could be clamped to a bench or table.
Its pretty darn stable, but if you push the buttons at high magnification you can get a little wiggle. But the remote solves that problem. The microscope made the process a dream!
@@Doodlebud Definitely would make this much easier. Looks like a nice microscope. Certainly helps with precision work, and way easier than the eye loupe you need to hold in your eye.
I had to sharpen some knives and somehow suddenly there was a fountain pen nib between, don't know how ;). It was one of the really cheap fountain pens I got lately, but all went fine, fountain pen writes lovely. Thank you for your videos, they helped a lot :)
My cousin has one of these in his house. I'll try to take your art to the next level. I am developing a pen holder so that you can place the tip to the grinding wheel without much variation. I'm experimenting with a mic boom arm. I've got a spare one. Also got a stage stand for mics. Need some engineering for the pen holder just: a holder suitable for multiple pens. If this works I can make a robot using servo motors to hold the pen and present it with precision. If you yourself can take out the labor and time from this you could turn this into a business. Another way would be to use a rectangular premade while making the nib. Don't know if that's possible but it would be a game changer. I've always been advocating this. These days fountain pens a not a practical for actual (serious) work. So there is no point of making so many round tips anymore. Whoever solves this problem using technology and then markets it using social media could be sitting on a gold mine. Would love to help you on this. I myself am an engineer by the way.
This was really fun to watch! I’m glad you got the nib you want now. I’m considering working on some of my cheap pens, just experimenting, playing around. Eventually, if I’m good at it, I would like to grind a Japanese extra fine on a Lamy 2000.
I agree. The EF nib is far too wide for my taste. As others have said, you are a very brave person. I have a Pelikan M800 with an EF nib that writes like a Medium. It annoys me to no end. But I am not confident enough to start grinding away.
I get that reference almost daily LOL. Both engineers, from a similar region, and guess maybe we have similar views. AvE has a much more colorful vocabulary to say the least ;) But I always take the reference as a compliment. If my channel grows to 10% of his, that would be amazing!
I just realised I follow your engineering channel too, I bought a slightly more basic version of that scope for use with watch repairs they are amazing for the price, extremely useful
Lol, I don't have an engineering channel. This is my only UA-cam channel. But yeah great microscope! Would be perfect for watch repairs. Any type of inspection or small part assembly is a breeze with this
You could really see the impact of blade finish with different stropping compounds & materials. I use straight razors as well & sharpen knives. I even have a video on my channel where I sharpen my Nakiri then shave with it 😉 ua-cam.com/video/yHPQE2fjyB4/v-deo.html
I collect and work on old Wade & Butcher razors. Have a 7-day mismatched set. I love to bring them back to life and use them. Just another thing to nerd out on along with pens. Thanks for the video link.
OMG how the hell did that happen. I finished the edit late last night and uploaded. I must have hit something by accident just before it finished the project. I do this whole channel on my phone so sometimes by big thumbs get in the way. The thumbnail shot is the final grind but maybe I'll do a quick short showing the final grind.
The digital microscope looks very interesting. Seems much easier to use than using two magnifiers with both hands in order to see the necessary level of detail.
@Doodlebud My idea is on a Lamy 2000 OM. For the first part of the grinding process, I have sand paper with the grit of your video but, do I have to do it with stone? I ask for purchase it in the same order than the magnifying camera 😂
This contraption would be great for your pen videos if it records and connects to your phone or laptop. Awesome, and it gives slides. I expect microbiology like sample now for inks Doodlebud. You have to put on the microbio cap on now. I expect greater things now buddy :)
Very cool! I have a question about the scope. Was there noticeable lag between moving something under the lens and when it showed up on the display? I've looked into things like this before for doing surface mount soldering and the digital scopes were always too laggy for hand/eye coordination and fine motor control. It always came down to needing optical scopes, and those are significantly more expensive.
This one seemed pretty good. But I'm going to be doing a seperate review of just the microscope as well & get into more details like that. Maybe I'll try soldering something & record the video
I got the microscope but ruined a few nibs. I was able though to do forensic print analysis and solved a double homicide case in the condo laundry room.
That's an nice bit of kit, Mr Doodles. Is the 'scope capable of taking a full-length image of a whole pen? BTW, the section on the L2000 is too slippery for me. Any suggestions? Thank you for a very, very interesting and entertaining show.
Haven't tried a full pen pic with this. My phone would probably be better for that type of working range. But man, the up close shots are fantastic with this thing. Not sure what to suggest for the section. I've heard some people put one wrap of a thin grip tape on part of the section.
With apologies to Blackadder... Do you not use a loupe Mr Doodlebud? A loupe? I have heard other pen reviewers speak of such a thing but I myself prefer an Andostar Microscope.
LOL 😆. Loops are great but for this nib point size and unique shape starting off, man did this microscope ever make the job easy. Also makes it SOOOOOOO much easier to do my vids VS trying to show you through my loop with my phone.
@@Doodlebud If I ever have the need to do similar inspection work I would be looking at the Andostar. As for schools, at that price point it is a no brainer. You take care.
7:00 the glind does not line up when piston is locked. This is a shame to German precision. I am not buying any more Lamy. I have a recommendation to your channel: Who Does It Best. Put all of your collection under microscope for each episode and give it a score basing on the finishing. Over times, there will be a score board of finishing. I will be very interested in the Aurora 88 Big Millerighe, it got to be even stunning under microscope.
SO MUCH FUN! I've used microscopes in all sorts of different ways during my engineering. Lots of ways to modify lighting etc to yield desired effects as well
Ontop of your skills, the proper tools make a huge difference. Great review, thank you.
Yes they do! A regular loop would might not have been enough to pull this off, the microscope made this a breeze
I’m so happy to see your channels growth! Keep doin’ it Mr. Bud!
That's really nice of you to say buddy. I'm just having fun messing around with my pens :)
Whoa!!! Two superb reviews in one. I like the closeups with that microscope. Way to go man!👍
Thank you for showing us all the details 😃
My pleasure 😊

Your living my dream pal , keep grinding.
Grind on my friend.... grind on...

Hey thats great, hope its going well :)
Yeaaaah buddy!! bring the science to the nib!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

You definitely don't want to jump into nib gridding with a Pelikan M800!
@@Doodlebud I need a good nib meister.
Marcas Bacas worked wonders for me on my Visconti Homo Sapiens!
Aw man, yesterday I wasn't desperate to get a microscope; today, I don't know how to live without one... 😆
LOL yeah this thing is friggin awesome!
That microscope is just way too cool. I’ll upgrade from our rinky handheld one day. Thanks for the up close shots of the legendary Lamy.
Having too much fun with this thing!
DB- Thanks for this very much "next level " feat! Best FT YT channel!
Love this pen now and writes wonderfully!
This guy reminds me sooo much of AvE. Sounds like him, same video style, even uses the same language creole! I wonder if they're related.... 🤔

Probably AvE you're thinking of? I get the reference probably every other day LOL. But I always take it as a compliment 👍
cool stuff!
Awesome! I ordered the scope...will see how it works. I like the grind.
Oh cool, hope you enjoy it! It's a wicked deal for this setup. All that gear & it costs less than the pen I ground!
I could have so much fun with that scope when honing my antique straight razors

LOL it's fun all on its own!
Hey DB. You never showed the final grind under the microscope.

What are those 6k-12k grit pads? They look helluvalot easier to use than my high grit diamond plates.
They are micromesh pads. I just put a link in the description. Can get them on Amazon. Here are mine:

Nice video. Can I ask what the red pen case is on your desk, please?
Here's a video I just did on them:

@@Doodlebud thank you 😊
The first few minutes of the video gave off stronger AvE vibes than normal hahaha
I was pretty jacked to use the microscope!
Ahh, man, no close-up images of the finished nib grind! Otherwise, cheers for the video 👍
The digital microscope looks very interesting. Seems much easier to use than using two magnifiers with both hands in order to see the necessary level of detail.
Its a seriously sweet setup!
Is it possible to grind an OM into a Fine or Extra Fine Italic??
It is possible, just depends on the tipping shape & size that is available to work with

That digi-scope is impressive at $179.
Yeah, and then a $20 coupon! Cheaper than the pen!
I got the microscope but ruined a few nibs. I was able though to do forensic print analysis and solved a double homicide case in the condo laundry room.
I wish you had shown the burr
It's very tricky & time consuming to try & show every tiny detail & step along the way

It's funny how the microscope is cheaper than most pens out there!
What do you think about the TWSBI Precision?
Haven't looked into that pen before
I'll be honest, to the naked eye I can't really tell a difference between the writing samples. If the nib feels better that's all the matters.
It's subtle since it's an EF nib. On paper, you call tell right away
Where did you get the grinding stone from? Great job
