  • HD highlights far better than any previously available clips put together of this 1970 NBA Finals thriller that tied the series 2-2 for the Lakers vs the Knicks. The Knicks would eventually go on to famously win this Finals in G7 but it isn't an easy road when you've got superstars like Wilt, West and Baylor on this team! Thanks to a private collection from UA-camr @70sFan. Check out his channel and Patreon to see more of what he's got and enable him to collect more great gametape like this!

Notice the subtle fakes and jabs in HD that get lost in poor quality film from that time. These guys dismantled defenses! They weren't slow or unskilled which I've often heard repeated based on the slow poor quality clips that are normally available.

The poorer shoes and court condition also made players more conservative here and there. I've seen Pete Maravich played like coked out Steve Nash. Five of his dimes in that Cavs game would've made the play of the month or even the year. These people definitely can hoops.

@@JAWrightonline they were slow. Walt Frazier isn't even that good he dominated at a time when the NBA was hemorrhaging talent, as the ABA was taking some talented guys from college and they even took talent from the NBA, so the talent was at an all time low. Then you have to factor that from 66 to beginning of 68/69 that there were 3 new expansion teams further diluting the league as that's too many teams at 1 time. The NBA was so desperate that they allowed Connie Hawkins the chance to finally play in the league. NBA was gimmicky in the 70s to compete with streetball ABA.

Yes I made that thought totally from a recognition standpoint. I'd say they were the first Big 3. By individual standards Baylor to me ranks higher than Worthy. Also West was the most skillfull guard of the 60's and early 70's and Wilt is still considered the most dominant big the league has ever seen. But if you rank them by team success then yes, the Showtime Lakers trio is the best. Different rules though in the 60's and 70's so it's not fair to compare. But if we could assume that this historic trio played by today's rules then I'm sure they 'd be scary.

Jerry West was my favorite player coming up learning the game back in the day and you can see why in this fabulous clip. Mr Clutch was super quick and his fakes had to be honored. Then he could get his jumper off in an instant going either right or left and hit it in your face. When it comes to perfect form, shot quickness, hitting it going either right or left, and the ability to hit his jumper in the clutch, Jerry West's jumper is the best I ever saw. More pure gold presented by the WCA. For a guy who suffered a potentially career threatening knee injury (e.g., torn patella tendon) in the 9th game of the 69-70 regular season, the Big Dipper was pretty darn awesome in this series. The only tangible Reed/Chamberlain comparisons in this series should be relegated to Games 1-4. Reed suffered his leg injury in Game 5, so the following statistics from Games 1-4, indicate that the two legendary centers played to a standstill.
Game 1 Advantage Reed Knicks Win

From the New York Times: LOS ANGELES, May 1 - Comes the revolution, and all athletic entertainment will be as continually fascinating as the National Basketball Association playoffs, whose final round was evened at two games apiece tonight when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New York Knickerbockers, 121‐115, in another overtime game.
Jerry West, who injured his left thumb in Wednesday night's overtime Laker defeat and was listed as a “doubtful” starter for this game, scored 37 points anyhow and made 18 assists. Elgin Baylor, the old est Laker, scored 30, including the two free throws that tied the game with 23 seconds to go in regulation time.
John Tresvant, an experienced substitute who didn't play at all in this series until the final minute of tonight's fourth quarter, sparked the 22‐ point surge of the Lakers in the five‐minute extra period.
    Next Game in New York
As a result, the battle for the championship of the N.B.A. has been reduced to a two‐of‐three series, with the theoretical ad vantage still pointing to the Knicks because they have two home games left. The fifth game will be played in New York Monday night, the sixth here Wednesday, and the seventh, if needed, in New York next Fri day. All will be televised na tionally (but blacked out locally) by the American Broadcasting Company, as this game was.
For sustained spectacularism, the 24‐year‐old N.B.A. has never enjoyed anything like the last six weeks, in which the Knicks and Lakers survived harrowing seven‐game tests in the first round and quickly (but not easily) eliminated Milwaukee and Atlanta in exciting second‐ round games.
Against each other, they have now played four furious games -the first won by the Knicks, only after the Lakers had over come a 20‐point deficit, the second by the Lakers by two points, and then two overtime games.
Tonight, the Knicks had an opportunity to take command of the series, after their rally to victory on Monday from 14‐point deficit, and they started out as if they intended to seize it. Dick Barnett hit five shots in a row, and the team sank nine of its first 11 shots. That produced an 18‐10 lead, which became 20‐11 with the game less than seven minutes old.
    Knicks Hit Cold Spell
But the Knick marksmanship failed after that. They made only one‐third of their 39 remaining shots in the half, were outscored, 44‐29, for a I7‐minute stretch, and went off at intermission trailing by 54‐47.
In the third period, the Lakers led, 68‐57, their biggest margin, but hit a five‐minute dry spell in which they scored only 3 points while the Knicks climbed to within 71‐67 as the fourth quarter began.
The Knicks finally caught up at 79‐79 with 7:42 to play on a basket by Barnett (who, wound up with 29 points). The Lakers went ahead by 6 on two occasions after that, and took a 96‐95 lead into the final minute.
But this was all warmup. With 47 seconds to play, Bill Bradley, who had missed eight of his 10 shots in the game, hit a corner jumper to put the Knicks ahead, 97‐96. A free throw by West tied it, Frazier untied it with two free throws at 0:34 and Baylor retied it with his two free throws at 0.23.
    Frazier Miss Last Shot
The Knicks got the last shot, but Frazier, pressured by Keith Erickson, couldn't connect.
So the extra period began with the score 99‐99. In the first 67 seconds, the teams matched baskets and t was 103‐103. Then West hit a jump shot and Tresvant, after a steal, sank two free throws. Wilt Chamberlain (25 rebounds,) 18 points, 7 assists), made the second of two free throws and the Lakers had a 108‐103 lead with 2:50 to play.
Barnett's free throw was matched by Wilt's (who, uncharacteristicly, made four of his seven free throws in the game). Baylor's basket was answered by Barnett's, but free throw by Tresvant and his feed to West on a breakaway made it 114‐107 at 1:27 and the Lakers were safe.

Wilt did have a weakness-shown by Willis Reed on multiple occasions. The great Willis had a feathery jump shot from mid range. Wilt would not go out that far to guard him. The result: about 36 points for Reed, the win, and ultimately the ring.

    • @jaybee5269
      @jaybee5269 2 роки тому +4

Wouldn't call it a weakness, though. Reed was trying to get Wilt away from the basket to nullify his rim protection, but the Lakers decided to take the risk that Willis wouldn't beat them from outside. Bad risk, in the end, but not necessarily Wilt's choice. That was Laker strategy.
