Always make sure all grounds are good! But that never affected running of one of these, the engine is one big ground! Even without a ground strap its still grounded. Hehe! Thanks man!
I think the aluminum bin is worth more than the distributors.... lol... still there's a lot of good parts inside of there. Those distributors are plenty good to keep in the car as a backup, might run like crap but it'll get you home.
Nicely done Glenn! I don’t think a lot of people know about the distributor drive can be put in wrong. Basic valves and timing is usually most of the issues half the time. You’ve always do a great job! Thank you for the great video!! That’s a lot of rain!!!!
Thanks dude, it in this case wasn't distributor drive that's put it wrong, it was actually the difference of how the distributor itself was manufactured! 👍🏻😁 Thanks again my dude, and yes it's raining again right now Haha... and I think it's supposed to over the weekend as well as being really freaking cold again!
It's below zero here currently! -7C, the duck pool is frozen and its windy and just terrible. Some people don't believe that Florida gets that cold but this part of Florida sure does.
Good job L.D. finally someone on u tube using a timing light. I have been using them since 1970 I've heard all the excuses why you don't need one but that's how I was trained and you showed how you checked timing advance etc. Process of elimination.😊
Thanks dude, I was just wondering yesterday where you've been I haven't seen your name up in a while and for some reason I didn't see any of your videos come up in a while either. When I finally get a chance to sit down and relax I got to do some catching up over there on your channel!
From Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. You surely leave no doubt regarding your opinion on 009 distributors. You even have a pail full of them. Interesting video. Thank you.
I replaced the 009 that came with my car not so long ago, what a difference it made fitting a 034. Runs so much better, correctly jetting my icts might if had something to do with it also.
You are absolutely correct; this car has a loose head on the 1-2 cylinders. Awful noise and loss of power. If I were the owner I’d follow your recommendation and drop the motor and get both heads retorqued and taken care of. It will be an absolute improvement in the power and noise level of the motor not to mention possible damage to the case by pulling the studs/case savers out.
Yep! He had to have it back for a short term, now at least it runs well and doesn't need to be abused just to make it go... but it will be back in the next few week for engine pull! Thanks man!
I had one of those cheap fog horns in my 1988 Toyota pick-up truck years ago. I recognized it emediately. They don't work well. "MADE IT CHINA!" LEARN'IN STUFF! 01/17/24, 17 degrees 6 a.m.. Chesterfield, Va.. You timed that engine just right! Fixe'er'up'er and "GET'ER'DONE!!" That weather is scarey!
I had a '72 VW, one day at work someone stole my distributor out of it! Had to find a way to get it home, bought another distributor and tried to put it in not seeing how the last one came out. The new one had no vacuum advance, and I know the old one had it. I wonder if it was an 009. Got it to run again. Normally you don't have to be prepared to replace what was taken like that.
A 009 will get you home, as you noticed. I say that to anyone that removes one, keep it under the back seat as a spare! But for someone to steal one.... lol! That's really something else! Oh man! Sorry to laugh, but that is amusing. Some people.....
Glenn, I would recommend to the owner that the heater boxes (or what's left of them) should be replaced with j-tubes and industrial tin (like on a thing). Otherwise the heat from the exhaust is going to bake the heads
Thats what I would do, however the heater box remnants do a GREAT job of dissipating heat. The rules change when those are still there. Ultimately, the owner will decide what he wants to do. You can find the industrial tins and J tubes on Eleanore. I mad videos of this in the past. I made my own parts.
Can relate to the distributor drive. When I first got the used engine in my bug ready to go I used the dizzy that came with the car. All the manuals etc said #1 should point a certain way but mine was 90 degrees out.
It may not be the drive, and could be the distributor itself. Some are literally that exact 90 off from the intended mark. No matter, if you observe this, the car will run fine! 😁👍🦆💩
@@DuckmanCycles Yeah i meant gear on distributor. Slot on drive in engine ends up in correct spot. Even though they are simple machines you can't really own a vintage Beetle without knowing all the gotchas. Luckily there are a few resources like yourself to get this info out to people.
Well the distributor has no gear on it. The engagment on shaft itself can be manufactured differently, or perhaps it's the top where the rotor goes that's different, I compared my factory OEM 034, a original 005 (not a typo), and this Pertronix and they were all the same, but all the 009's I had in the pile are 90° different. Perhaps the correct distributor isn't the outlier, rather its these incorrect parts. Interesting stuff nobody talks about... 😁👍🏻🦆💩
Man who’d have thunk if you set the valve lash and the timing properly the car would run like it should /S. Nice job getting it running better, it’s kinda nice when it all falls into place like that isn’t it. If I were that guy I’d probably have you drop the engine and tighten the cylinder head bolts to spec that way I’d have a reliable little Beetle
I have a question about the shepherd hook , if the carburetor is pulling vacuum, how would fuel get into the line? I have never seen one of these done before.
Good question, I'm getting a lot of questions about that hook and I am making a UA-cam short on this topic today. But the answer is.... the car eventually gets shut off, right? Also when you return the throttle back to idle, the diaphragm pulls air from the carb back into it. Tiny fuel droplets do get in the line as well as other vapors. With an inverted P-trap it can't get into the vac can. Without one, the diaphragm usually fails in the first year. The red convertible Beetle I worked on last summer had no hook, and had bad diaphragm. But I didn't design this, they were actually factory from VW! Hope that helps clarify things!
I agree. But as you saw he started the engine. It’s happened that you adjust the valves and start the engine but one is too loud. So you stop the engine raise it back up, pull the valve cover find the prob and tighten it up to what, a little loose or a little tighter, or regular?
That isn't the right way to do it, and that is out of torque sequence, head warpage may result. Trust me though, I've tried this shortcut years ago off-camera, it doesn't work.
So Glen how’s that global warming going…You know we are supposed to be having normal summer temperatures and be dead by now according to Al (I created the internet) Gore.
Haha... yeah. Its warm now though. About 60 out there. Suppose to freeze again through the weekend, and rain on an off again for the next week is forecasted. But its Glenn with 2 Ns! Hehe! Thanks man!
Make sure all earth straps are very well connected.
Always make sure all grounds are good! But that never affected running of one of these, the engine is one big ground! Even without a ground strap its still grounded. Hehe! Thanks man!
Don't sweat it, everyone that has ever worked on an Air cooled VW has left the distributor cap off a few times. Good job on the tune up.
Yeah but the fact that I remembered that I left it off, that's what matters lol.... thanks man!
Yup
😁👍🏻🦆💩
I’ll give ya $5 for the bucket of 009’s!
That storm that came through was intense.
I think the aluminum bin is worth more than the distributors.... lol... still there's a lot of good parts inside of there. Those distributors are plenty good to keep in the car as a backup, might run like crap but it'll get you home.

A little rain and thunder is much better than our below zero in the Chicago land area.

Mystery bug problem, a deluge and a boomer sandwich. That was a lot of entertainment in one video.
Good video brother! It's funny how those basic things like valves and timing can get the engine running like butter baby!

Thanks Hank! Yeah, they are terrible. They meet the minimum requirements to get you running, but thats about it. LoL!
Great video, Duckman.
Glad you survived the storm.
Thanks man! That storm was impressive in the video, but that was about all to it, it was quick. LoL!
Hey Glenn i love that you have an dedicated bin for those dizzy's thats just brilliant.

Gotta clean that carb next, and it's gonna need an engine pull to tighten that head.
Nice one Duckman, enjoyed the post storm tour!!!!

Yep but I think I caught the worst of it on video, there wasn't much else to it. Either way, new roof kept me dry!
@DuckmanCycles that's thw main thing , no damage .

It will, especially on a hot day sitting in traffic. Puttering about on a cool day it'll be fine. The owner was warned about this by me. Fix it!

Maybe just tighten the bottom 4 cylinder studs. See if that helps. No engine pull.
