Interesting post. However, I have some doubts:
1. If the kids are told that there will be a second marshmallow, but the parent fails to provide the same, the kid who waited out the period would feel cheated. Unfortunately life is often like the forgetful parent and promised reward does not always arrive.
2. There has to be sufficient supply of marshmallows! If all tha kids manage to wait out the period everyone has to be provided the promised second helping. Unfortunately here also the available rewards are limited. Remember, Neeraj Chopra competed with a number of persons who also went through equally rigorous training. So the system presupposes a number of failures to delay gratification. If the rewards are not forthcoming the persons will lose faith in the whole process.
These are few thoughts that came immediately to mind.
