  • "Family farming has changed in the sense that we dont do things the way that are grandfathers did it, but you still have to have the family to work the farm, and we do," says Mary Jane Kerns, one of four generations who work the Kerns farm in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Farmer follows the Kerns during a year on their farm, as they vaccinate calves, plant and harvest their crops, and sell them at their family produce stand. The documentary also interviews older farmers, who describe how their families made their farms work in the days before machinery. Filmmaker Chip Hitchcock created Farmer to explore the powerful connections West Virginians have with their families. Farmer was first broadcast as part of the Mountaineer series in 1995.

When I was a kid in NW Florida, we raised hogs and butchered them. We made sausage, lard, and smoked the sausage, hams, shoulders and bacon. We also made sause. That was a long time age-I am now 82 and live alone on a four acre homestead with a milk cow and calf, 2 milk goats with four kids, 10 chickens and a dog. Can’t see giving this up!

      It's amazing.
Even in urban areas you can have a hanging garden, off each window that gets the sun. Things like grapes, tomatoes, ect...

Yes its so sad to see everything is Iphone internet ,Fast food prepackaged foods .Family life is becoming a thing of the past People dont even sit at the dinner tables together anymore .I can remember grandma had her chickens a garden we went to get what we needed for the day .Now its going to the store buying overpriced pesticide prepackaged crap .

Simple solution. Don't buy an iPhone, grow some of your own food, cook everything from scratch, don't watch TV, go permaculture. I cook all my meals fresh everyday and growing more and more of my own food as I build out a food forest around my house. I don't own a TV or iPhone. But I do visit youtube for educational (and entertainment) purposes, mainly educational.

I know what you mean but life is what we individually choose to make it. My family still sits down and has dinner together. We have our chickens and our garden. The rest of the world may go nuts but our roots remain firmly planted.
