  • Excerpt:
In the Bible, the city of Ai is mostly mentioned as part of Israel’s emergence and settlement in Canaan. Outside of the Book of Joshua, Ai is mentioned twice in Genesis and relates closely to the city of Bethel. Ai is also mentioned in Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7, once again connected to Bethel, with them having a combined 223 people returning from Babylonian captivity.
Ai after about 1500 BC. Since the two estimated dates for Israel’s entry into Canaan are mid-to-late 1400s or late 1200s BC, in Callaway’s conclusions, there was no Ai for Joshua to attack and destroy. Callaway bluntly stated, “Archaeology has wiped out the historical credibility of the conquest of Ai as reported in Joshua 7-8.”

Or more likely, all of the ESTIMATES of archeological sites, dates and events are just that: estimates. There are very few dates given in Bible and NO calendars. Not only that, mankind has made and used many calendars through the ages; they're all wrong. Not to mention, we have no definitive proof where Ai was, just speculation.
The OT acount of Ai is about obedience to God anyway.

Ai had to be destroyed because the minds of the Canaanites were artificial. It was said to be a royal city so that was their crown in a metaphysical sense. The same way in today's time peoples minds have been conditioned to be artificial. Artificial food, love, money, intellect, and relationships. Its kind of a stretch but good modern day interpretation. This is why it is a lost city or city of ruin.
