Rick, I pray for you and Jan everyday, you two are quite the inspiration! I look forward to your new videos, I am taking notes and trying a few of your applications. I too am new to orchids, just a couple of years like you. I also was forced to retire from a job I absolutely loved due to health issues. I am a skip south of Houston, TX, in League City, so I am trying out your rock media for a few of my new rescues (I stalk my Lowe’s garden center for clearance orchids!). I am wanting to possibly try doing a few mounts, but I need to get my patio set up to hang things. Thank you for being a wealth of information!
Brilliant, brilliant observation, Rick. Yes, it makes an absolute sense to me to keep a spike going if it hasn't been discarded by plant itself. No doubt it's much easier for the plant to flower established spike again rather than grow a new one. And if there are ample nutrients available/provided then they can grow a new one as well. Great thoughts. Thank you for sharing. P.S. Such a delight to look at your healthy plants, I can't get enough of it.
Yeah! The professor is in! :-) I'm always excited when you post a new video. Seeing your results is very exciting! I have pages of notes from former videos and am getting good results also. Sorry Jan was having trouble, but thankful she is home and feeling better. I pray for you both frequently. Thank you for taking time to make this video. I know it's not easy when you have so much going on. Prayers for you both!
Hello Rick. So sorry to hear that Jan was having a rough go of things. Glad she is building up her strength and a special prayer that her tests have the best news possible. As always your plants are absolutely stunning. You are so great at putting into words so many things I have noticed with my orchids. You may be new to orchids but you certainly have a magnificent handle on growing them and responding to their needs. Would love to see the wisdom you share put into a book, as if you haven’t enough to fill your hours. There is a multitude of books out there on growing orchids but not many that teach how you grow. To be one with your orchids, identifying their individual needs, and then providing for those needs. Thank you for sharing that with so many. Your grow room inspired me to finally build my own room. I got a late start and have done most of the work myself. The walls have been made waterproof by a new vinyl wall tile called Dumawall. Not sure how but would love to share some pictures with you. It is just about complete enough to move my orchids into. They have spent the last few months in my uninsulated garage. Of course there is a heater in there but living in Minnesota you can imagine what my electric bill has been. They are doing fine but I don’t believe they are as happy as they can be. Hope to move them inside this week. As always you and Jan remain in my prayers and my thoughts go out to you whenever I walk through the orchids. Much love.
how wonderful to hear.......I hope they love their new room.........its a great way to grow them....especially in Minnesota.......I would love to write a book on growing orchids........but not sure how to even start......I think alot of people get caught up in the common orchid myth's.....and they keep getting repeated over and over.....thank you for the kind words......
Rick L. Orchids I agree that people get caught up in all the myths and I’ve listened to you bust quite a few. I wish I could provide some answers as to where to start writing about the valuable information you have, but I find it mind boggling myself. Maybe some of your viewers would have thoughts. In the meantime your videos are treasure chests for all orchid growers, whether just beginning or with years of experience. Just glad you’re able to find the time. Blessings to both you and Jan.
Hi Rick, I don't know why but, I keep coming back to this video of yours. I think it's because I'm so Amazed about your phalaenopsis orchids and how there growing so many spikes. I'm excited one of my phals has a big spike growing the flower's aren't opened yet but it's branching of the same spike even before the spike has it's flower's out. I'm tickled pink about it. I've already had 4 in spike that have held onto there flower's for 4 month's now. I have 2 other's in spike right now. Not all of them are spiking but. They sure are growing good. Thank you for all the information you share. Just wanted to share with you. Roxanne
thank you Roxanne for the feedback...Im so proud for you.......I love hearing about everyone's collections and the progress they are having.... If I can get mine to respond this fast after I just started growing them.....everyone can...…..In a few years there should be some incredible orchid collections among you subscribers....I bet you will be one of them.....Its not just calmag, or kelp/seaweed, or using a certain fertilizer, those help...but, ….its about consistency......tiny amounts all the time...the longer you can keep up a regular routine of tiny amounts all the time...…..after a while they will be bigger, healthier, multiple growths and they will start flowering intensely.....always keep calcium around them and they will become jungle plants before your eyes...…..thanks and good luck my friend.
Hi hope you had a great Thanksgiving, we have so much to be thankful for this year, so glad Jan is doing better God Bless You both. All my mini phals are reblooming some with 2 spikes, roots overflowing in their pots,😀, I attribute that to your channel. You are a great teacher on growing. I referred my Orchid club members to watch your videos , yes indeed I sure did😁. I gave away 9 AF I grew from leaf , I needed table space for my orchids. How are your AF doing? All your orchids look great it feels like spring with all the buds developing. Well my friend happy growing, hugs & prayers for Jan’s an yours continue good health an strength you both need.
wonderful to hear Gerri......your hard work is paying off........my violets are doing great........they are in another location is the reason no updates......soon
Live show would be Awesome, when your up to it. Thank you so much Rick for all your video's and Advice. We know it's a hard time for you and your lovely wife. I did get me some of the garden lime waiting on the seaweed kelp to get here from Amizon. I've noticed a big difference just since using the Epsom salts and cal-mag can't wait to see results after using the garden lime and seaweed kelp extract when I receive it. Many Prayers again Roxanne
......so very kind thank you my friend.....your orchids will love you for the additional calcium.....you will have strong healthy orchids, and many blooms to come...
Hello Rick, First Glad to hear Jan is done and hope she continues to feel better. She'll kick the upper respiratory thing and hope the doc has good news when you see him. Now to you glad you posted another very informative vid. Great to see your knowledge, experience and common sense helping so many of us. Like you this time of year my plants go under lights. Would love to see a vid on how you do it with information on lux par lumens somehow simplified not much out there to help. Again glad you guys are hanging in there thoughts and prayers your way buddy Thanks Larry
Larry thank you for the kind words........mine are all in front of south windows.....and some are getting additional florescent lighting...Im using 4-T8 fixtures with 6500k bulbs.....mine are just getting supplemental lighting.....not what they really need for proper growing.....but mine are in a winter rest........if I was in a grow room....my preferred lighting is Metal halide.....600w -1000w .......more light the better.....
Always womderful orchids Rick, it is such a pleasure to see how healthy they are. Wish the same to you and Jan, hope you get healthier in no time. A big hug to you both, glad to see you too are hanging on there. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Dear Rick & Jan, it's great to hear your positive news and your orchids are amazing! You make me feel better 😘 thank you. Love to you both. May God bless and heal you.
Your knowledge is vast on plant's I don't think it matters that you've been growing orchid's for only two years. You have given all a lot of information that people with 30 years haven't. So thank you Rick.
That is great to hear you and Jane are doing well. Your phals look healthy and happy, beautiful green shiny leaves , I love that. You will have lots of blooms within 2 months! Looking forward to see them bloom.
Wow so may spikes! Like ur analysis on leaving the old flower spikes. That's the normal in nature. We just follow without thinking when somebody told us to cut them. Need a Rick to put things straight! Best wishes to you and Jan.
Hi Rick, you my Friend are Amazing at Growing orchids. You phals with all those spikes. I hope to be one quarter as Awesome at growing them and learning the knowledge that you have. Love all your video's. My Prayers are always with you and your Lovely wife Jan. Hugs, Love and Prayers for Michigan. Roxanne
I learned something new about my Phals...Thanks a lot!! Since I've started the Cal Mag and Lime my 4 and 5 year old Phals are blooming again and that's all because of you. And so are my Zygos!! I'm soooo excited! Thanks my friend! It's good to hear that you and Jan are doing okay...sending prayers to both of you!!
......wonderful to hear.....thanks Terry........Ive found that Oncidiums are heavy feeders of calcium.....I think that's why a lot of growers struggle with Zygo's......
Hi Rick and Jan, glad for the update, glad your home Jan and take care [fingers crossed for the petCT scan ]. Rick thank you for taking the time and showing off your beautiful orchids! I can't believe the tolumnia ate already blooming! I find I have the most difficult time with the mini phalaenopsis. It's so cool in my winter plant room[ even in the rocks and clay] the roots tend to rot. My standards grow like weeds. I must admit that I have cut spikes, but only because I want full spikes of flowers. I do leave spikes on my favorites tho..but now I'll leave them knowing what you shared. Take care and best wishes for you both... Kelly
Kelly......those mini phals love calcium and dont grow good roots with out it....I think they need more than the bigger ones.....feed them enough to keep their spikes and they will bloom big clusters for you......Nitrogen is key to bigger blooms, more blooms, and longer lasting blooms............good luck.
I'll try that ...i forget more than I learn from you! ... I spent my free time rewatching a few of your fertilizing videos yesterday And hopefully I don't loose any more minis. Thanks Rick
I so wished I'd watched this video sooner...very exciting to see what you've been able to glean from growing your orchids!! I'm amazed at the spikes that are being regrown & sprouted :) All the info makes perfect sense, logical sense when thinking about phals (which are my only orchids at present) and their storage needs. So happy that Jan is home and praying for speedy recovery!! Keep posting pleeeeeeaaaassssse, I'm so encouraged by them to continue trying my hand at growing these beauties. Hugs to you both
Thank you for taking the time to share , your orchids are glowing! I learn a lot from your experience. I will try sprinkling a bit of garden lime in the pots. All the best to you and Jan !
Glad to hear Jan its done with the treatments. ..also in home! 😍I hope you enjoy the thanksgiving with all your family. ...grandchildren , take care each of you, everything looks great love it 😍 my prayers and love will continue to both of you, Blessings all ways 🙏❤💖👍
Hi good to hear jan is home and doing good , god bless both of you. My family is going through hard time as well.God is Love and caring ,Please take care both of you .Love from Cali👍💜🌸🌹🌻🌺
Your orchids are beautiful! I'm so excited to see your spikes have produced new spikes! Good job! I hope Jan regains her strength and has a clean scan. Prayers for both of you. Tammy
Dear Rick, I too am a new grower. I have 3 phalenopsis one is near death 😢 can u help me find the Jacks 5-12-26 and the Calcium Nitrate 15-0-0. You said u had enough to last several lifetimes, so would it be possible to purchase some of ur extra nutrient mix? Wanted to let u know I pray for u and Jan every night. My dad had Lewey Body Dementia and I have been fighting stage 4 breast cancer for 14 years so I truly understand the health challenges u both are undergoing. Stay strong and enjoy your Orchids and other beautiful plants. Being out in the fresh air and tending to ur plants is so therapeutic. Thank u for sharing ur knowledge and helping the rest of us Orchid growers to enjoy the lush beautiful plants that u help us to grow! 🙏🏻👍😘
Hi Rick! Excellent information, thanks so much for sharing. Your videos show great orchid care in action and the results are amazing! You and Jan stay in my prayers, and I'm so happy to hear she's getting stronger. Many blessings from the TN orchid clan!
Really nice orchid collection! Love those Brassavola buds and flowers, Sharry Baby. Agree that seaweed fertilizer is very beneficial, esp to phals.i think the fact that you soak plants is another reason for your success. Hard to overfertilize that way and promotes better absorption of nutrients. Best wishes to both of you on the health front.
Hi, Happy Thanksgiving. Phaleonopsis are my favorite orchids. I just started with them about a year ago. I have other varieties but phals stand out for me. Wow, the spikes on your phals! I am grateful for just one spike. I have watched every one of your videos and look forward to the new ones. Praying for good health and well-being forJan and for you. Thank you for all of the great information.
You know... You have that natural ability to read these plants....I think you have much to add to the Orchid community! A new way to look at things.... They could learn a lot from you!!!
Hi Rick, thank you for you're videos. I am so delighted that found you're Chanel, I grew orchids for about 4,5 years and only recently I started given them calcium, lime, magnesium and what a brilliant results. When i am looking back what I done was nothing and that why I had so much deficiencies. Thank you again and hope Jan feel better soon. Lots of prayers for both you.😇
Rick L., one of phals growing in my classroom is exhibiting your finding of holding onto a green spike and putting out a new round of buds. I agree with your presumption of that phal keeping a sufficient level of PNK for this development. Rebranching has not happened but keeping the green spike is enough to keep this orchid enthusiast delighted. You get an A+ for spekaing about orchid myths. Novices can really get into butchering orchids from adhereing to myths spread on social media. Give Jan a hug from her prayer girl from the state to your right of 'bama. Thank you for this great lesson.
@@rickl.orchids I see you have put mounted orchids in a bowl, which to me, is a great idea. Do you keep them there for very long or simply for watering before hanging them up again?
Nice spikes you have past my record of spikes on one plant. I only have one spike that has some age to it left and quite a bit of it died back before I manage to stop it. Am glade your both doing well cancer is no fun but Jan just hits it over the head again and keeps going. Lucky for use your doing the same. Two years am impressed! I'll keep watching as they come out.
Hi Rick! Saw you at Roger's live and couldn't wait for this video. To be new, just as you, and have all your phals in spike; that is my dream! Learning from you all the time. Much love and prayers sent for you and Jan brother. Be assured you have all our love and support. Hug Jan for me. Have a great day!😊
Welcome back. Always looking forward to your videos. I'm so sorry to hear Jan wasn't well. Blessings for speedy recovery. Glad her Chemo ended. My Phals are doing great thanks to you. Lots of roots, leaves are healthy, it better bloom! :)
Poor Jan! Sending thoughts of love and peace and strength your way! Feel better. It's your turn to rest, relax and rejuvinate! Love to you both! Always!
Another very informative video Rick, thank you! Those Phals are looking great! So many flower spikes, wow! What you say about distribution of nutrients on Phals makes me think that's why one of my Phals is "eating" its lower large leave. I'm hoping that means she's using that stored energy to send out a flower spike. You see, I did a number to her roots with several repottings this past summer and she has been recovering from it. I won't be cutting anymore old flower spikes from any of my Phals anymore unless they get absorbed. What a great tip! Wishing you and your family the best!
I really look forward to all the excellent information that you give in your videos. Thank you, thank you! I am blessed to know that your dear wife has had her last chemo treatment and still pray for her health to fully recover. Praying that she gets a good report from her surgeon and that God blesses her path as she branches out to new opportunities from her hard work in her studies. The 2 of you are such an inspiration! Hope your Christmas is happy, full of cherished moments and full of love surrounding you. It is awesome to see the success you have with your orchids, learning and providing much-needed information and, personally the great ground you are covering with health, strength, loyalty, and commitment to each other. May God bless each of your steps.
Very eye opening video Rick. I love watching your content. It's always good to challenge 'facts' that are not actually based on evidence. Your plants just look amazing. Best wishes to both you and Jan xx
What an interesting hypothesis. I have a few phals with spent (but still healthy and green) spikes. I think I'll leave them on and see what happens. Thank you for sharing.
@@rickl.orchids I'm going to try 🤞🏻 It's a battle figuring out winter watering and ferts here in NC. The weather (and humidity) is all over the place this time of year.
So happy to see that you have posted a video! Enjoy seeing the progress of your orchids. I agree with your comments on the mini phals. I have noticed the same with mine. They are my most difficult orchids to grow. Glad to hear of your wife's progress. Sending positive thoughts for both of you. Thanks for your video.
It's great to hear from you, Rick. Happy Thanksgiving. Hopefully Jan's most difficult health days are behind her. Now she can get ready for exams and graduation. I can't wait to see your pals in bloom! Take care.
Hiii Rick... I was just thinking about you, as you haven't post any videos these days... Haven't seen this video yet, just popped in to text you... Hope you doing well. Take care.. lots of love.
Good to hear Jan is doing better, I have an old friend & orchid buddy going through chemo for hodgkins lymphoma. Its very hard on the body. And we're closer to you locality wise, up by Pensacola Fl right now, Scott's step mother passed away day before Thanksgiving suddenly. So sadly we've a funeral to attened. I'll have to rewatch your video when a more orchid focused mindset. Good video with lots of info, funny I have been researching potassium and orchids. Been using garden lime also. Cheers, sorry for rambling buddy. I need to crash out.
@@rickl.orchids how is Mrs now at this stage? Please Rick, do you have a face book account, because I saw random FB users sharing your work. Please have one account wonderful , thank you!
......I dont have a Facebook for orchids...I am on Orchidaholics.....on Facebook.....Jan is doing wonderfully....getting stronger and cancer free.....still facing radiation, then hopefully done.....
I agree with you. I have had problems with phalaenopsis since day one,but I think I have it figured out now. I put a green house in my house just to keep them alive. My house is just to cold for them in the the winter.
You are often in my thoughts especially when we don't hear from you; glad to hear Jan has finished her chemo; you are a resilient couple and deserve all those kind messages. Great video Ric, it has made me check my phals this morning. They have been somewhat neglected due to having a chest infection. I feeling okay now, so the orchids are my priority. Take care 🤗
......any stroll thru my garden reminds me of you Margaret, ....I pray you heal quick and recover fully soon.....I too am catching up on my plants.......thank you my friend.
Margaret and Rick----my two favorite youtubers. I have learned so much from the two of you. Thank you both. I also watch Jacolyn and Durrell (Orchids for Dummies).
i just bought me a bottle of cold pressed seaweed extract..i had some suces with algea liquid so i step up a nuge..:) best wishes for your wife i hope she recovers well.. your plants look great..:)
I've been thinking about this idea/question for a while now and would love to hear if you have any thoughts about this. I hear a lot a growers who talk about providing the most "natural" growing environment as they can for their orchids, whether it's through feeding, light, temps, humidity, mounting vs containers...and on and on. Are there any hybrids that have been so far removed from their original species ancestors by hybridization that their ideal growing conditions/environment have changed so much so that they don't grow as well in those "original" conditions/environment? You mentioned how one can see examples of clumps of phals in the wild. Could this be a type of growing habit that is more or less prominent due to hybridization? Praying for you and your wife!
......Matthew, thats a great question, ....one for coffee and a big table full of orchid growers.....as Im still new to orchids......Myself.. I haven't found any that seem to be more easily grown in our enclosed environments than in nature.......I think some may grow faster than in nature ....due to the fact we have more nutrients to offer vs mother nature....very interesting concept.....
Rick, I'm so sorry to hear that Jan was in the hospital but I'm glad to hear that she is doing better. And that is fantastic news about her finishing the chemo treatments! I pray that the upcoming scan will be positive. :) I'm looking at all of your phals and shaking my head in amazement at all of the spikes!! It's hard to believe that only a year ago all of these plants were bag babies/or rescues! You are going to have so many awesome, beautiful blooms that you're going to think you are in a flower shop! :) Are you giving them the kelp/seaweed with every watering? Blessings and Prayers to you and Jan from Caro
Caro, I always smile at your words.....yes Im still using the kelp/seaweed.........about 20-30ppm every 3rd watering.......as they come into bloom I may start every other watering....
@@rickl.orchids Thank you, Rick. I'm going to follow your advice as you are achieving some awesome results! I've never been able to grow more than one initial spike on my phals so everyone is going to get 'kelped!' I'm betting that Rick's Flower Shop will be in full bloom by Christmas. :)
Rick your orchids are looking great! I have been praying for both of you daily and glad Jan's chemo is done. Hope you are doing ok. I have a small gift I made and would like to send it to you and your wife is there an address I can send gift to? Your neighbor in Georgia.
Hello dear orchid brother! So good to hear your voice! So glad to hear everything is better now. Bless both you and Jan. Your both in my prayers. I’m still here. Fighting the good fight but getting drained. It’s been so very hard. But on to an orchid question or two, my Cattleya’s are not blooming. I’m keeping them same ppm as my Phals. Orchid whisperer said she feeds her Cattleya’s 400 ppm same as her vandas. You think I’m under feeding mine? They are all growing new shoots, like mad, but no signs of blooms. Also did I hear you say your using the Jacks? Did you get it figured out? Your such a blessing to me and I’m sure others! Hugs and love from WV ❤️
....most of my catts are to young...immature to bloom yet....some are getting buds, sheathes.....but most are just to young....bag babies are young seedlings usually.....Ive had most of mine just a year now......they are growing very well with large growths......once mature they will start bloom cycle.......I prefer to feed lower amounts.....but I feed often....Im only feeding 125-140ppm, and mine are doing fine....I am using the Jacks more now......the Nitrate is better in cooler temps....than the Bettergro.....
Phals, and especially mini phals never, ever, stop growing. Vandas are the same. Hungry customers. My Vandas are still outside. They are loving the mounts with Spanish Moss. That dewpoint at night is the grow time. Water is MOST important at night not day due to the dewpoint and moisture accumlilation during this period.
Happy Thanksgiving! We all have much to be thankful for. In the high desert here in Az I've found out lava rock doesn't work for me, it dries out too fast having to water every other day. Want to try water culture. First with no fertilizer s after many water changes and eventually an eighth t. per gal of water. Don't want to burn the roots. I just don't know and I love my Phals! Help appreciated. Thoughts?......Az girl🌵😎🌵
...phals love calcium......if they have enough they grow roots non stop........with good roots they can get feed with every watering.....Phals love a good meal.....
Hello again! Absolutely love your videos! I enjoyed your explanation of the phals and the flower spikes. I have one question, you stated in a previous video that once the last flower has opened, the just give water. Correct me if I am wrong. No fertilizers, including kelp, when in flower? This could last 3 months?? Or would your advice be something else? Thanks again, Rita
..........good question........I drop the N down a bit is what I mean......i push N all thru bloom to maximize the spike, and bud production.....after they are budded out and starting to open.....they still need feeding......just not large amounts of N since the growing is pretty much finished at this point.....
I could write a book singing praises to the Lord for the positive attitude that you have with what you're dealing with and also what Jan is coping with!! It's truly heart-warming! You receive so many wonderful blessings from your subscribers which also touches my heart especially since we live within a sad World of hatred and malcontent. Keep up the great loving attitude! I do have a question. How do your mounted Orchids survive without a shred of moss to cover their roots? Also, your plants live in ROCK! I find that amazing! Mine are in Semi-Hydro. I guess that can be considered a similar environment, no? All of your plants look so healthy! Congratulations from all that you have learned in such a short amount of time! Better yet, thank you for sharing your knowledge with your public! I have just started using CaliMagic but it's too soon to brag of any results. I, of course, expect great ones! : } I also grow African Violets and had purchased lights for them 10/31/18. It is AMAZING how they have transformed, already, because of them!! They were not blooming although they looked VERY healthy! Well, I didn't want to write a book but it seems like I might have. Give Jan my best. Tell her that you both have another prayer warrior out here in Pa.
I will pass along your very kind words, thank you.....no moss is needed, and they will grow on about any surface.....the secret is in how they get watered......I soak them......they stay moist for several days ....I never spray them or give them a quick spritz of water......only soak....
..TZ....keep in mind..moss will help with hydration....and if I had a recovering plant or a plant that had poor roots...moss isn't a bad idea for them. ......however,....moss has a low ph, and its ph drops quickly as it decays......low ph keeps them from growing roots, and absorbing nutrients correctly....If I use moss, its only temporary.....I remove after a few weeks if not needed.
I appreciate your additional information. It's been mounted for a long time and growing ever so slowly. Since I started CaliMagic, the 2 roots that it has had seem to be growing and there is a new nub poking out. I do soak it every 2 days. It's my only mount. I just watched your entire video and am flabbergasted at the number of flower spikes that you have!!! On just one plant! You are definitely on the right track!! Keep up the great work!
Hey Rick, I hope you and your good wife are having a good day. I watched your video where you made up a batch of nutrients with Epsom salts, cal-mag, and Bettergro to a concentration of 150 ppm. I thought wow I could do that. I like the control. I've also watched the video where you discuss pH and you said "let it swing". I think I know what you mean but I'm not sure... 1. From what to what? If 5.8 is the sweet spot then 1 pH on each side of that? 2. Should I vary it (for example) from 5.5, then 6.0, then 6.5 and repeat on a schedule? My other question is: I live in a fairly temperate environment - my green house stays between 55 - 65F November to March - WINTER. Should I vary the concentration of my nutrients ie less in winter, more in summer or should I just fertilize less frequently or both. Days are short too My media is almost exclusively orchiata bark and growstone mix - well draining and fairly airy. I'll ask you about summer stuff another time...
great questions Paul.....ph swing is important for giving them a varied diet....I let mine swing from 6.0 - 6.7 +/- .....Feeding in that range gives them a good balance of nutrients and in high absorption ranges...During the cooler shorter light level days I feed less often and less strength....right now Im feeding around 125-140ppm total nutrients.....when spring approaches I will increase my feeding levels..
I bought a peloric orchid. It is a phal. The petals curve in instead of opening full out and sort of flat. It is very pretty, but you have many ideas about what makes orchids tick, so I wondered if you might have an idea about how to possibly help my orchid with its blooms. Anything idea would be appreciated. I feed no-weekly half strength. I have a plant room for the cooler months and keep it on a covered patio at my home in Houston, Texas. JUST FYI.
.....my phals have taught me that they really like a lot of light......just not direct light.....give them lots of filtered or dappled light.....and because they don't have bulbs or canes for nutrient storage, like other orchids.....they require a steady supply of nutrient's to grow and bloom correctly..….more so than other orchids...….every time they get water they should get food...….With their thick leaves and long root systems......they are calcium hogs...….give them plenty of calcium and they will never have root issues....it will also keep pest off them....
@@rickl.orchids Thanks Rick, I knew I could count on you for at least an idea. This phal is reblooming and after 2 years with my orchids, IT'S ABOUT TIME. Blessings on you and Jan with prayers for your improving health.
........thanks so much Brenda.......the secret to growing Phals is the more steady supply of food you can give them the better they grow and bloom.....find a routine that works for you and them and stick to it.......skipping meals or letting them go for a few extra days .......will make them drop lower leaves and eat their flower spikes.....Genetics can play role in growth habits as well, so be sure and research your orchid........especially if species vs hybrid......keep plenty of calcium around them and they will have very strong root systems, .....good roots allows the plant to absorb nutrients' better..........learn to watch the roots for signs of when to water........have a blessed day......and thanks again
pray for her rick in my extreme close circle we had to do withthe same nasty disease, so hold her tight brother i can not anymore😭strength to you both HE is with us do not worry

I am giving my orchids dolomite lime like you suggested.Could you tell what else I need to feed my orchids and how often? Thanks and glad to hear from you and my best to Jan.
.......if you give them plenty of calcium, thats 95% of the work.....other then that...give them low amounts of nutrients ....often....and occasionally some kelp/seaweed,....

Sorry Jan was having trouble, but thankful she is home and feeling better. I pray for you both frequently. Thank you for taking time to make this video. I know it's not easy when you have so much going on. Prayers for you both!
I love your work with the Orchids, you've taught me SOOO MUCH in such a short time.THANK YOU RICK L.
Ricks orchids always look the healthiest. So green and amazing, missed ur videos Rick, best wishes to yall
I enjoyed re-watching this one from last year again. Hope you and Jan are doing well. 🌱💚
Just Beautiful plants thank you for sharing. I will love to see more of your plants. Xoxo

Would love to see a vid on how you do it with information on lux par lumens somehow simplified not much out there to help.
Again glad you guys are hanging in there thoughts and prayers your way buddy

May God bless and heal you.
.......very kind thank you.
I'm so glad to hear Jan is done with chemo. Thanks for the update. ❤️
Your knowledge is vast on plant's I don't think it matters that you've been growing orchid's for only two years. You have given all a lot of information that people with 30 years haven't. So thank you Rick.
.......thank you my friend.........I want everyone to have the same success as i am.....
That is great to hear you and Jane are doing well. Your phals look healthy and happy, beautiful green shiny leaves , I love that. You will have lots of blooms within 2 months! Looking forward to see them bloom.
thank you Mary......cant wait to see them all blooming...
All the best my friend and God bless. Thanks for the videos also. Greetings form Greece :)
Very happy to hear your wife is doing much better now, wishing her continue improvement in her journey to good health, thank you for the video .
Hi Rick, it's nice to hear she is doing better. Prayers for her.
I'll try that ...i forget more than I learn from you! ... I spent my free time rewatching a few of your fertilizing videos yesterday
And hopefully I don't loose any more minis. Thanks Rick
so glad to hear that Jan is doing well. Love watching your video .
Hi Rick. Happy to hear update on your wife. Hope you're doing well also. You're both amazing. Thank you for this piece and all the info you provide.
Much love to you and Jan. You, sir, are a very good man.
Great to hear from you! Glad Jan is finished with treatments. Praying scan results are good news. Take care.
Your orchids look amazing! I aspire to your level of excellence! Wishing you and Jan many blessings at this special time.

Being out in the fresh air and tending to ur plants is so therapeutic. ......Amy, its always a treat when you visit here.......thank you for the kind words.......blessings back my friend.
They could learn a lot from you!!!
very kind thank you my friend.
Lots of prayers for both you.😇
........I never tire of hearing feedback such as yours........thank you
Hi Rick think for the information. Say to Jen you are all in my prayer God bless one love
thank you Ivylyn....
Thank you for this great lesson.
thank you my Georgia girl........love your kind words always.....

Very good information! I'm glad I was able to find your channel trough Roger!
My prayers are with you. You have a great sprite
thank you Clifton......

I am blessed to know that your dear wife has had her last chemo treatment and still pray for her health to fully recover. What an interesting hypothesis. I have a few phals with spent (but still healthy and green) spikes. I think I'll leave them on and see what happens. Thank you for sharing.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Jan. Thanks much for the video. 🤗❤️😖

Hugs and love from WV ❤️

hope all good at your place 12 17 18
Phals, and especially mini phals never, ever, stop growing. Vandas are the same. Hungry customers. My Vandas are still outside. They are loving the mounts with Spanish Moss. That dewpoint at night is the grow time. Water is MOST important at night not day due to the dewpoint and moisture accumlilation during this period.
.......I agree.....the phals never stop growing.......amazed at the temps your plants are taking.....love the observations you make....
Rick L. Orchids Thanks Rick. Will use your recomended Cal/mag. Blessings to you and Jan.💞
Rickkk my duddeeeeee!!! Happy thanksgiving man! You sound like you feel a bit better, hope thats the case. Much love from Mauritius
Hope everything goes well
I could write a book singing praises to the Lord for the positive attitude that you have with what you're dealing with and also what Jan is coping with!!
I will pull off the moss on the only Orchid that I have mounted and see how that goes. Thank you so much!
..TZ....keep in mind..moss will help with hydration....and if I had a recovering plant or a plant that had poor roots...moss isn't a bad idea for them. ......however,....moss has a low ph, and its ph drops quickly as it decays......low ph keeps them from growing roots, and absorbing nutrients correctly....If I use moss, its only temporary.....I remove after a few weeks if not needed.
Hey Rick,
I hope you and your good wife are having a good day.
Days are short too
My media is almost exclusively orchiata bark and growstone mix - well draining and fairly airy.
