In this video we talk about WHY we should train habits in our children, a taste of what Charlotte Mason teaches about it, and some of my favorite resources for you to get started in learning more about habit training.

This is exactly what I've been trying to get my husband to understand. Our children don't help out around the house as much as they should because *I'M* not making them help out more. Plus, I have days (or even weeks) where I do the bare minimum and everything suffers for it. Habit and character building/training is absolutely something I need to incorporate in our homeschool and house. Thank you for these videos :-)

Edit 2, over a year later: Things around the house had been on the back burner because we were trying to downsize before a huge move, pack for the move, then there was the move itself, and now, much later, we are finally getting back on track with everything. Oh, and my wonderful husband understands now 😊

I'm so excited to start working on habits in my home. We have lots to work on. We are in the process of adopting our foster son so in this season of change in going to form some good family habits. We are also starting CM curriculum next year so what better time than now:)

Great video with so many resources! You have given me much to think about (in a good way!). I feel like you in the sense that I want my kids to be raised with better habits than I was. So hard to teach your kids what you haven't mastered but worth the struggle I believe. Mystie Winkler said something like "if your bathroom stays gross all the time, your kids will use that standard. If it is clean, they will use that standard" and ever since then I have kept my bathroom pretty clean! Our kids emulate us in every way so it is so good to think on these things and live with intention!

I'm so excited to have found this video. Character development is so important to me but I feel like we've lost our way a bit recently. I've been looking for some resources like the 24 habits and knights in training books you mentioned so I'll definitely be checking those out. It's also so inspiring and comforting to be reminded that there's other moms out there for whom character development is really important. I'm trying habit training/life skills as health in part of our homeschool week this fall . My boys really need it especially my older son with special needs as he is now middle school and struggling and now I know at 39 I have add so I need it too.

When my kids see me pray I notice a little later in the day they will slip off to another room - I sneak and peek in and there they are talking to Jesus and singing songs to Him 👏❤😭 To be honest though I DO NOT have it all together and often find myself thinking "will I ever get my life together" 😩 I'm gonna check out one of those resources! If I can fix ME then my family will follow in ❤

OH MY GOODNESS, SUBBED IMMEDIATELY. I was roaring as you were describing your non-disciplined self because that is 100% me, to my shame! I pray and pray, but I am just not naturally a 'together' person! I am so grateful to find other moms that can relate...I KNOW I can homeschool, because I have passion. I just need advice from moms who have overcome scatter-brainedness, and not those perfect Type-A moms (not a dig...go Type-A's, go! Not jealous at all! HA!)

Connie Dunn I have focused on learning to raise boys because I grew up with sisters and I myself am a girl, lol! But I have a few that were recommended to me that I will share!

Thank you!! In my experience, I say wait until your kids are at least mid- elementary. Or if you have at least one in mid or upper elementary! If you do try with preschool kiddos, just know you need to keep it super simple and your expectations low! The elementary age kiddos can really add to discussion and you can have deeper conversations with them ☺️
Do you have a video on charlotte mason for beginner moms ? What books to read and start with ? It's overwhelming. I use curriculums that are based on charlotte mason but I don't know much about her teachings and I'm about to add in foreign language (Japanese) and I'd love to know how to put all my resources into place under her teaching style.
That’s a great question! I’m actually working on some videos for just that.
The first books I can recommend to start with is “For the Children’s Sake” by Susan Schaffer- MaCaullay.

Growing up, i was a hot mess, i had bad habits, i dont want my kids to have those habits, so i loved this video.. thank you for sharing:) also do you do read aloud time with your kiddos?? If so, how do you do it ??
There is hope for us hot mess mamas! We just have to learn those habits and grow along side our children. :) I DO do read alouds! For us, doing it during a meal or snack has helped. So, when my kids were little lunch time worked best. Now that they are older, I do it during or after lunch, and then at bed time while they draw or play with toys quietly.
The Read Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie is my favorite book on Read Alouds :) So good!
Oh and I meant to say I would love your tips/experience on starting music lessons at a young age. I am just learning piano myself but I’m hoping to start my now 4 yo starting around 6 or 7 (???)

Oh! Great question! I can do a video on that too :) 6 or 7 is perfect age to start piano! My daughter was 6.5 when she started and I didn’t push it. My son who is now 7 hasn’t started yet, but will start with drum lessons soon.
I've got a subscription to prodigies music.com which works from around 2ish (I don't think it's relevant earlier than this, though they have resources from birth). My kids (2&3yo) are learning how to sing and read music. We use the piano to play along and it's totally working. The plan is for piano lessons after we're done with the program, but I'm so pleased with the result from this program. Somewhere to start looking for pre-piano lessons.
Ashley, when you use Laying Down the Rails, do you use alone or alongside Laying Down the Rails for Children? Just curious if it would be beneficial to also get the supplement. Also do you think age 4/5 is appropriate to start habit training?
I believe the Laying Down the Rails book is good to read FIRST as an overview of the habits. The lessons is built just for the children. I think both are handy, but I felt like the lessons for kids were sufficient without the other book. And YES! Ages 4 is the perfect time to start habit training 😄
