My art teacher in college always told us not to ever use hot water on brushes, as it will melt the glue that holds the bristles in place and they will fall out easily. This was a great tip!
The second method I ended up watching the original girls video and literally ALL the comments that used it talked about how it completely DESTROYED their brushes
Thank you for this video! One warning about the vinegar- I've heard white vinegar is great for removing certain types of glue so I would be really hesitant to get it anywhere near brush handles! Using it in a solution that you only use for a minute or two is probably the best way to keep your brushes safe from fallout!
I cleaned all my brushes today after watching this. The dish soap, white vinegar & hot water was awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this. My brushes are like new without any smell at all of vinegar. Great tutorial!
I basically handle my makeup brushes the same I do with my regular watercolor brushes. Wash them in slightly warm water (not hot) with mild soap to not ruin the hairs /fibers and dry them with the bristle side down to keep the water away from the base. I actually use my drying brush stand for both lol it’s really handy and made out of metal so you can properly clean it and sterilize after using it.
Yep, I've always used oil and soap to wash my brushes. Although, I don't mix the oil with the soap because the sole purpose of the soap is to break down the oil. I just double cleanse: oil first, rinse, soap, and final rinse.
i was scared to wash my brushes for years because i didn’t want to ruin them. if you’re genuinely scared to clean them like i was trust me when i say method 1 works amazingly. it’s the only method i use for cleaning them now. so glad it didn’t ruin my brushes lol
@@alexisbyrd5130 I think yes. I sometimes use refined sunflower seed oil (that's the most common cooking oil in my country, like canola oil in the US), and it works well. Although I mostly just use a gentle soap like the third method.
I use dish soap, and a silicone brush cleaner to clean my brushes. It is super effective! My brush cleaner has a silicone part to swirl the dirty brushes, along with a spongy part to dry clean.
I clean my foundation buffing brush every time I use it, rinse it over the sink with miceller water and then wet and clean with regular hand soap. It takes less than five minutes
Right?! I usually use a beauty blender & I clean that thing every single use. My skin is acne-prone & I wouldn't dare use a dirty brush or beauty blender on my skin. I can't believe people actually use dirty foundation brushes or blenders 😭🤮 How do they not constantly break out?? So unhygienic! Like you said, it literally only takes a couple minutes! 🤦🏼♀️
Inspired by the 1st method, don't go to your kitchen for your oil, any facial oils for removing makeup works. I mixed it with detergent instead of dish soap, and it worked too!
I always blow dry my brushes after washing because i want to minimize the chance of mildew. I blast mostly the center part then i put it in a cup to finish air drying
I’ve done the first method before with the virgin olive oil but the oil left an oily residue and I had to repeatedly clean them with dish soap to get rid of it. The second method with the vinegar seemed the best but in theory the third method which is so similar to the 2nd would work great.
I use Ivory bar soap on my brushes. I have never had any problems with it but I'm probably one of the only people in the world who washes my brushes and sponges every time I use them. Ivory soap is super gentle too.
OMG!!! I used option 2 and it is LIFE CHANGING for me! Had I known it was this easy to wash my brushes I’d have done it waaaaay more often than I have been!
You’re just repeating what you’ve heard. I’ve never had a brush fall apart in years. And they are cheap enough to buy new ones. I doubt you’ve ever had it happen to you.
@@ClipZ_Gaming_1 if the water goes above the metal bit that holds the bristles together, it will soften the adhesive. So if you're soaking it in hot water too, that's a recipe for disaster.
in my opinion you shouldn't soak your brushes if the water goes over the brisels. i use the shampoo - vinegar - conditiner method but it's only good for bruses only one person uses.(not for professionals). i have one set of bruses, i have been washing them once a week for 7 years and they still feel brand new.(they're from Real Teqniques)
I found using a clarifying shampoo like Neutragena’s clear clarifying shampoo works pretty well, but did take a few times to rub and rinse to get them clean, especially the dirtier and/or larger brushes.
Thank you for sharing your video with us regarding cleaning makeup brushes. I want to tell you it really work number two with the vinegar hot water and the dawn soap. I put a little twist on it I put the water in an old bluebonnet cup (lol), put the water in the microwave and let it heat for a minute and 30 seconds. After which I put vinegar, baby shampoo a tablespoon, and a tablespoon of white vinegar stir it put my brushes in it and also put my puff pad in it as well and within 30 seconds to everything was very clean even my makeup puff. Again thank you for sharing. You may want to try this method against well. Keep up the good work!

I use baby shampoo and a silicone face scrubber to wash my brushes and rinse thoroughly. After squeezing them out, I put them in front of a small fan to dry completely. It works well for me, although I think adding the step of micellar water first may improve my routine.
These were great!! Olive oil and soup was fantastic and made my brushes sooo soft. I did have to make a slight modification because I have a skin thing, but my dish soap worked great too! 🫧🫧
I personally use sone shampoo first, swirl it over my palm and tgen clean it. Afterwards I use some condiotioner and do the exact same process to take the remaining gunk out, but it also makes em really soft and smell reaaaally good. Wouldn’t putting the makeup brushes in a cup with any liquid make it also go inside the brush handle and mess with the glue ? like you said it wasn’t good if you put the brush facing up on the water from the faucet
Agree. I use Johnson's baby shampoo. Never soak brushes in a cup of soapy water. Use luke warm water and dry lying flat. That was a bad idea with the cup.
Wow! Thank you I am happy that now I don’t have to buy anything from make up stores to clean. I would love to know which make you brushes you consider good quality from your experience. I have been experimenting but I would love some feedback for some longer lasting quality brushes especially for foundation and eyeshadow because I use those a lot
I know this is an older comment, but the Real Technique brushes have been really great. I've had mine for over a year and they are still going plus you can get them super cheap during the holidays
Anything that was cleaned with vinegar will not smell like vinegar at all after you let it air dry. People are always scared of using vinegar because of the smell, but vinegar EVAPORATES. It never leaves a smell once the object is dry. I used to rinse my hair with a vinegar solution, and it never smelled.
Okay so I've tried several methods, however not these, the comments are good, however I Love my Ulta solid brush cleaner , fast easy and really gets the job done
I shake my brushes after rinsing them and make sure to wipe from the tip of the handle through the metal part and squeeze the bristles so drain any water. I like to wash my make up brushes in J & J regular baby shampoo. I just pour a small amount into an empty plastic tumbler and add warm water then I place the brushes in the glass and swirl them around. I also use a plastic rubber facial scrubber to swirl the brushes against the little plastic bristles, then I rinse them and dry them on a soft towel, then I shake them and place them in a plastic brush dryer so they are upside down. TIP: rinse the brushes in COLD water to completely dissolve the soap molecules so they don't leave residue in the bristles. I have also used lavender castile soap but it is harder to rinse away.
Same here. Johnson's baby shampoo is great. I pour a small amount into my silicone brush scrubber, rinse with warm water, lye flat to dry. Then I spray the bristles with brush antiseptic spray.
Do not submerge and/or let your brushes sit in any water or soapy water over time it will loosen the glue in the ferrule and your bristles will start to fall out.
I think any of the techniques will work THE BEST with brush mat.... I believe the way that mat washes of gunk, no other method can replace that... But yeah i am a bit uncomfortable with using olive oil XD...
All valid too me, but Better to Use Mild soap! me, using J&J baby wash/shampoo in luke warm or cold water and yup, wash downward to avoid water residue that holds the glue. I also had brush rack to hang downward and then dry.
