A clever harmonic device used in good taste by both Jacob Collier and Claire Fisher but hardly invented by either of the two. Debussy used the same thing in La Mer in 1903.

@@francoomarlopezlopez well quartal is also a huge part of la mer (was the first word that came to my mind), I remember hearing/seeing fifths in the conclusion chords in the video but I'm also dyslexic.
Thinking about paralel fourths, perhaps it was inspired by the Javanese gamelan debussy saw at the world expo. The only other explanation would be if he heard a rock musician play power chords.

-Jacob: sunny weekday morning in which you wake up well rested and smile out your window as you drink tea gettin ready for work.
-Joao: walk at night with your dog, you notice that the trees and plants move differently at night… they seem fresh and relaxed

Clare wore it better because Jacob has the album. I've been a fan of Mr. Fischer for years. Check his arrangements on 'The Family' album produced by Prince.

You could argue Clair wore it better. But the comparison is apples and oranges, aesthetically speaking. One is an arrangement of one overdubbed skilled human voice many times, the other, an orchestra of many skilled players resonating in the same room. The aesthetic difference is huge and therefore, the comparison almost moot.
Also nothing is new, as Debussy was doing this 100 years ago. We all steal.
I used to go to Clare's house to hang out. He played music like this on his organ, improvizing it as he went. It simply stunned me that he had such a brilliant harmonic skill.

Jacob is without a doubt the ultimate musical sponge in a fascinating and admirable way. Little Blue also sounds more transparently like Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” (a piece Jacob has performed live)

Playing rich chords on the piano can make us forget to phrase each note for it to really shine. I hope studying strings arrangement and arranging string quartets for piano would help me with that

I think the context is just too different, it's so hard to say. I think if it's just the individual phrases I prefer Clare's arrangement, but I absolutely adore A Noite as a whole. It feels like a much more compete piece. Considering A Noite is basically it's own track then that isn't exactly surprising. The passage that leads into the phrase you talked about in your video is just so dissonant and crunchy, I love it (ua-cam.com/video/4PIMR_oGRcU/v-deo.html). And using that to almost descend/calm out of it into the bossa style track is just so clean. Would love your thoughts on that?
Although there's no doubt Jacob's taken massive inspiration from Joao's music, and definitely potentially that piece specifically.

Like João's "Amoroso", Sinatra with Tom Jobim, Tom Jobim's "The composer of Desafinado Plays" or "A certain Mr. Jobim", etc.
I still prefer Clare Fischer's work though.

Some of those chords sound like they're from the tune "Guess Who I Saw Today?"
It’s a bit of a stretch. Jacob regularly uses chords that make this voicing look like a triad. Not to mention the different inversions and as someone else already said; the context. It’s much different and hardly “stolen”.
You have to remember that Jacob has cited Clare Fischer's arrangements as an influence.
He's also cited the album João

@@silver1788 Yeah, I'm just ribbing 'im. I know everyone has different tastes and "good" taste isn't real but it's fun to pretend it is. My favourite Jacob stuff is mostly off of his debut and bits and pieces from the first Djesse, couldn't get into the second volume of Djesse. My favourite tracks of his are, "All Night Long", "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" and "Close To You". Least favourite is "Moon River", makes me wanna puke.

@@silver1788 Its a 5 note (pentatonic) minor voicing of stacking three fourths and and a major third. This gives you a minor11 voicing.

Of course I am aware because there are many pretentious interviews and also many overcomplicated ideas that this guy throws around needlessly. The absolute only thing I would give that person credibility is the innovative use of current technology for performing with his voice. No need to worry defending things that simply cannot be defended

Whether or not JC had this in mind, it's too brief a moment to describe as 'stolen' in any dishonest sense. Creating tension and release through use of harmony is something composers have been doing for a long time, just as they have borrowed from, and been inspired by those who influenced them, consciously or otherwise. Interesting observations should not be used as pretexts for false alarms.
Indeed, the list of "almost stolen ideas" is pretty huge (no offense). I used to be a big fan when I listened With The Love In My Heart (and I just got waay stunned) but slowly I started thinking there's some kind of "emotional barrier" he simply can't break through. It's like he seems or feels more like a performer and arrenger trying to be a sing-songwriter and suddenly you just don't feel anything. I do not intend to fall into the classic cliche "music doesn't have to be complex to be good", I'm a jazz musician myself but there's something nearly wreid with his music lately. In a nutshell, I look forward to Djesse vol 4 buuuut

There is no such thing as being original, nobody is.
I'm sure the title is supposed to be an exaggeration.
Jacob is in my opinion, one of the most inventive, creative arrangers.
He wouldn't be like that without his influences, which he often cites.

Although there are several examples of songs, musical motifs, or Jacob's melodies that are very similar to previous ones, the important thing is the subsequent development that is given to the song, which Jacob knows how to give us. What I feel lately is that his emotional genuineness is almost nil. His songs sometimes seem more like a "salad of ideas" where the emotional is totally overshadowed.This, although it is a personal assessment, is something that I share with many people, especially Spanish-speaking people, like me.
