If the house is valued at £600k his tax bill would be £240k depending on where and what allowances were part of your proposal. Still totally unaffordable. The difference between the general publics houses and a farm is the house will almost always be sold and the remaining money after tax is split between however many people that mostly already have a home and their job isn't tied or affected by this whatever. In the farm situation there would be almost always land sold to pay the tax. The reduced farm area then directly affects those inheriting usually living and working on the farm. The fixed costs stay the same you can't bring them back online with the reduced area so profit, usually small and less than minimum wage decreases even more. Less area means less security with borrowings so that cost escalates. Less area means less economy of scale and the whole thing repeats every generation until there is nothing left
@ firstly yours maths is wrong. Taking your £600k valuation, you first need to deduct the tax allowance, which is £325k to £500k, and in some cases if you qualify, a nil tax band. So take the first figure. £600k - £325k (tax allowance) = £275k x 40% giving you a total of £110k.

Food production is costly, the inputs are expensive, the weather is unpredictable, the rules are oppressive, the regulations, invented by well intentioned eco nuts put us at a global disadvantage, the governments are only interested in quotas and keeping food artificially cheap with little care for its origin, quality or sustainability. As long as the supermarket shelves stay full of cheap produce, farmers are little more than wealthy landlords that slow traffic and leave mud on the road. It’s been a generation since folks have had to suffer rationing and hunger. Farmers were valued after the last Great War. I really hope we don’t have to wait for the next global conflict, pandemic, natural disaster, or tariff war before folks wake up and remember, they ALL need a farmer, three times a day. Home grown is the most secure, best quality, sustainability produced, eco friendly and conscientiously produced food we can put on our plate. Just allow us a decent (fair) return on our investment and risk and we can talk about paying a “fair share” to the treasury.
@ I agree with buying British produce where you can, but when produce that’s produced in southern Spain is cheaper, and in a lot of occasions tastier than produce grown down the road, you can understand why people buy imported produce.

I have and pay Tax on paperwork to buy my property Yearly property tax Income tax Tax on food and clothing Tax on electricity Tax on all repairs and maintenance. Tax on all and any repair items I have to purchase Tax on my salary Tax on my car Tax on the diesel fuel I purchased Tax on my TV license Tax on my phone Tax if I go out to a restaurant And they want to tax me because I die and want to give what I have to my children. Remember who voted these people in !!!
