  • This is a review of the ALITE Mayfly chair and the Helonix Ground Chair. I looked all over for a comparison of the two with seat back and back height reviews and couldn't find one anywhere. The manufacturer websites didn't have anything either so I hope this review helps someone else out.
    I responded to someone below with some detail information from the manufacturer websites so I'm pasting it here for reference...
    ALITE MAYFLY
    weight: 1.6lb (725g) [or 1.3oz without front feet]
    ground to seat base: 2" (5cm)
    HELONIX GROUND CHAIR
    weight: 1.3lb (610g)
    ground to seat base: 4.7" (12cm)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ALITE MANTIS CHAIR
    weight: 1.8lb (816g)
    ground to seat base: 7" (17.8cm)
    HELONIX CHAIR ONE
    weight: 2lb (897g)
    ground to seat base: 10.6" (27cm)

    I nearly bought the alite chair based on this review. Thankfully I went ahead and did some research before I pulled the trigger. The Elite cheer is heavier than the helinox ground chair, even with its front legs removed. Now at first I thought that the alite was heavier because it was Stronger. That was the wrong assumption. The helinox ground chair has a capacity of 120kg (265lbs), while the alite comes in at 113kg (250lbs). That means the ground chair is not only lighter it's also stronger will probably last longer. Finally I think anyone who is willing to carry a chair, is not going to remove the front legs of the alite chair, over carrying the lighter, stronger helinox ground chair with a stable base.
    Thanks for the review I honestly very much appreciate it, but I'm happy I pulled the trigger on the helinox ground chair instead.

    Great review, thanks. Interesting and objective without a lot of timewasting chat. It was a great help when choosing which lightweight chair to buy.

    Video is still relevant and helpful. I bought the Mayfly for 53 bucks from REI (30% off $100 then an additional 25% off that) Its a bit more weight than the Helonix, but packs tighter and that was the deciding factor.Thank you!

    Great review! I’ve been considering one of these chairs, my brother has the helinox ground chair which is very comfortable. However I am 6’3” so I think the mayfly will be my choice. Thank you for the review! The only review I’ve seen that helped

    I also bought both chairs. I really wanted to like the Helinox, mainly because of the weight. I am 6'1" 195 lbs. The Mayfly was hands down much more comfortable. The Helinox dug into my back just under my shoulder blades and also dug into the back side of my legs when I extended my legs out. The Helinox was defiantly easier to set up but that's about it. I'm sending the Helinox back.

      Fishbreath81 Nice, and thanks for the update -- I know the feeling though...sometimes you just need to try it out for yourself. The weight of the helonix is attractive. I wanted to like that one too but as you saw from my review too, the mayfly is worth the couple extra ounces. Anyways, have fun!

    Thanks for the comparison!
    I went for the Helonix because in soggy grass or sand that one will stay pretty sturdy and not sink in too much.

    I cant believe this is 6 years old. Ive never seen either chair. Wife has a Helinox 1 year old that sinks in the ground. Its 6 oz lighter. I like the Mayfly better I think. Thanks

    It looked like the Helinox was much easier to assemble. Thanks for the review.

    • @MollerFarm
      @MollerFarm  9 років тому

      Fishbreath81 Helonix was definitely easier to assemble on first unboxing but only because the Alite has the extra front feet. The Alite without the front feet is the same assembly difficulty. Honestly though, after keeping the Alite, I've assembled it over a dozen times for backpacking trips this season already but it just became one of those routine things after a couple assemblies.

    Thanks for doing this, this was an incredibly helpful review. The Mayfly is a bit too expensive for me so I actually went for some of the cheaper Crazy Creek options, I wonder if you've checked those out?

    • @MollerFarm
      @MollerFarm  9 років тому

      LastByte Funny, I had a Crazy Creek chair a long time ago. They're comfy, light and the style is available from a bunch of different manufacturers. They even make blow-up ones with that style now that double as a 1/2 sleeping pad. For me, I just like being off the ground more with less to balance. However, I could see that style coming in handy during some breaks. I actually use the Z-seat while on breaks and the Mayfly in camp. Get to a camp store and try out that Crazy Creek style chair -- the other downside to it being on the ground is that the nature of the seat causes the sides to narrow as you sit back in it which squeezes in on your hips/legs a bit. Just food for thought.

    Do you ever find that you "bottom out" in the Alite and end up sitting on the ground even while you're in the chair?

    • @MollerFarm
      @MollerFarm  7 років тому +1

      Lauren Phillips I know this was a long time ago, sorry I didn't see your comment. If it helps you or anyone else still I haven't had this problem with the chair ever. Although I may have a "wider area" that distributes weight more evenly. :) But then again, my wife hasn't had that problem either in the past couple years of using it. The chair is still going strong!

    Alite Mayfly is terrible. After a few months the material stretches and your ass is touching the ground. Also, the poles keep popping out so it's super annoying.

      Ariel Estulin ...been using mine for few years straight, never seen either of those issues. 200+ lbs, i am and we use tbem all the time. On the motorcycle on a 12 day riding/camping trip with tge chairs as i write this, actually. Anyways, sorry you haven't had the same experience... hope you found something better!
