Airstream - How to Winterize an Airstream Basecamp (2018)
Learn how to winterize your Airstream Basecamp! Also learn the mechanicals area of your Airstream Basecamp while you're at it.
I actually shot this video in December of 2017 but just posting now, December 2018. That shouldn't mean much to you except I have seen the 2019 Airstream Basecamp and it's the same style as the 2018 so this video should also apply to all of you 2019 Airstream Basecamp owners.
Hope this helps you and thanks for watching!

Backpacking Chair Comparison - ALITE Mayfly vs Helonix Ground Chair
Переглядів 67 тис.9 років тому
This is a review of the ALITE Mayfly chair and the Helonix Ground Chair. I looked all over for a comparison of the two with seat back and back height reviews and couldn't find one anywhere. The manufacturer websites didn't have anything either so I hope this review helps someone else out. I responded to someone below with some detail information from the manufacturer websites so I'm pasting it ...

Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the video, great help, suggestion re strut removal, I did not have small screw driver long enough for bottom clip . Instead used piece of coat hanger filed into a one sided wedge, pushing downward and working it side to side at the same time, . I found the diameter of the hanger to be just the right size to disengage the clip.
the guy with the turkey pried the retaining clips for the cable off when he didnt need to. I quit watching his video at that point. The clip for the ball would pop off easier with a shot of lubricant. It works exactly like the hatch struts on a Subaru or hood strut on a truck. Removing the taillight was a good way to show you what it looked like anyway, not nessary. The replacement bolts are not nessary. A small bottle of locktite will work after cleaning the threads with a wire brush. These ALL break reguardless of the weight you put on the tailgate. Next, the HVAC blender door Clacking motor. I like my Nissan, but annoying little crap like this drives me crazy.
Thanks for watching. I replaced the blender motor too, last summer (without removing the whole dash, actually). I took some video but haven't edited it. Honestly, the truck owes me nothing at this point, it's been fantastic in every way but I definitely get what you mean. Merry Christmas.
You never said where you ordered the replacement bolts from.
Heya, thanks for the comment. All of those links are in the description. Have a nice day.
E- Bay has them by the hundreds. Price varies.
This was amazing!!! Thank you!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I wanted to tell you I only decided to do the winterization myself because your video was so well done and easy to follow. I am grateful, and can't thank you enough!
@@MollerFarm you saved us time and money and we are very thankful!
@@sandydiamond6430 Thank you for the comments & great job! This is very encouraging to maybe make more videos. God bless!
While I appreciate the other guys efforts..yours is a whole lot better in the details. Thanks man. Not the man with the turkey. But another dude who just stops before he gets through with the job.
What a great video! I went through a whole host of you-tubers but they were all either confusing or incomplete. Your video not only clearly outlined each step, but also explained WHY, allowing me to better understand the entire system. Thank you for putting together such an effective and thoughtful explanation!
Whats years have this?
2011 Titan SV
Thank you very much for your post. It worked out for me exactly the way you explained it. Save me a ton of money. Thanks.
Excellent
Excellent review!
Best, clearest video I’ve seen on winterizing the Basecamp. Thanks! Did they perhaps combine the pressure relief valve function into the heater tank emptying valve in the 2019 model?
Anyone know why the suction on the rv fluid might not be working for me? I’m using a 1/2 inch adapter into a 1/2 tube. It attaches but the suction won’t pull it past a second or so. I tried two separate tubes and even cutting the tube shorter. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you for the superb lighting and steady, focused photography. I remove the shower head and keep it inside
Good job! Thank you!
Thanks, very good directions
Great video Dan, thank you! I was looking for something that specific, so helpful.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you.
I cant believe this is 6 years old. Ive never seen either chair. Wife has a Helinox 1 year old that sinks in the ground. Its 6 oz lighter. I like the Mayfly better I think. Thanks
Outstanding description & video depiction! Best I've seen! Thank you!!
this is the best video! thank you!
Also got here from the turkey video. I’ll get my replaced Soon. Thanks!
Also, love the Bakflip Revolver. Just got mine last year! It’s great
great video....you said you were going to do a de-winterizing vid in the spring. Did you? Can't find.....
Yes... de-winterize please!
Thanks
Thank you for the video. Do you still plan on uploading a de-winterize video? Happy traveling.
Actually- I ended up flipping my Basecamp on a turn out in Fort Collins, CO! They have really high curbs for water diversion and from a stop sign, I started rolling to make a right turn and the rim clipped the curb and the whole thing tipped over! :( It was some event - still don’t know how it had the leverage to actually flip it… I was driving so slow from a full stop. Ended up salvaging the trip but by the time I got home to a dealership to assess the damage, it was deemed totalled. I ended up getting a 19’ Flying Cloud to replace the Basecamp. I just wanted something where I didn’t have to change the dining area to a bed every night. Hope you’re having fun with yours!
Show me the price please
How much it costs?
This is awesome! Thank you! I just bought a (new to me) used 2018 Basecamp. The nearest dealer is 2-1/2hrs away. How do I de-winterize? Do you have this video too? Or suggestion where to find? Thanks again!
Couple years ago you asked this so I’m sure you’ve got it by now. However, I did pin a comment up about dewinterizing. Hope you’re having fun with your Basecamp!
It’s Helinox, not Helonix.
Wow, thank you for this. It’s exactly what I was looking for 🙏
Thanks for this. We have a 2020, but just knowing the gist of what's what and where is very very helpful. Thankfully here in CA it's more about just draining water out of the system when idle for extended periods rather than having to winterize. :)
hi, thanks for the video. i have a 2018 BC. found everything in video except the hot water tank pressure release valve. any more tips on its location? thank you!
I didn't find that on my 2021 BC 16X either.
Appreciate it, bubba...took me less than 20 minutes to repair my 2017 Titan after watching your video. One really minor recommendation...don't bother looking from underneath the truck, pull the tail light and open the spring clip on the strut before you remove the hinge. Open, easy reach from the top and everything is held in place while you slip a screwdriver in the small opening. Installed a Nissan part and it made a big difference in how the tailgate feels when you open and close it. Beginning to wonder how long that hinge was broken before I noticed it!
This is the third year for our 2018 Basecamp. We have never parked our trailer on the it’s side fortunately. Sorry to hear you had that problem. The reason for this comment is I have watch your video and I followed your instructions and winterized my Basecamp for the first time. Thanks for your video it was easier than I thought. Lesley S
I have a 2018 and just moved from Florida to Kansas (don’t ask me why 🤔). This is perfect. Many thanks, and happy travels.
Huge thanks Dan. My first time winterizing and this was super helpful. Any tricks to prevent the plastic toilet valve from cracking during the winter. I’ve asked in the Fb Airstream group and it seems like everyone just assumes that they need to change it out regularly.
I took my handheld piece off and shook it violently until water stopped coming out. It took a lot of shaking for some reason.
Dan, thanks for the helpful video. When you fill the lines with antifreeze and bleed the kitchen and bathroom , do you also bleed the hot and cold water lines under the trailer?
great info , Thanks
I like both Helinox and Kermit chairs!
Thanks so much, great video! I pulled off the tail light and used a long skinny screwdriver from there, piece of cake!
Great help, Dan. I appreciate you walking through the plumbing system---just what I needed.
Thank you so much for this. Super helpful!!!
This was a very good easy to follow video. I would also really like a de-winterizing video.
Did you try switching the plastic piece that broke instead of the whole thing? Looks like the plastic part fell right off.
Very helpful Dan! I have a 2019 and it was pretty close to the same as your 2018. Did you come out with the Dewinterize version?
I didn't... Never got a chance to, unfortunately. While taking a slow right turn on a trip enroute to the Grand Canyon, the right rim clipped a curb and flipped our Basecamp over! It was so strange. I'm going to make a video with photos and explain what happened at some point soon. Long story short, insurance deemed it totalled. I was freaked out that it flipped so easily so we ended up getting a Flying Cloud 19' to replace it. Being a foot wider, it feels much more stable than the Basecamp. It was some ordeal. I did, however, reply to a gentleman's comment below with my process for dewinterizing. I may put that process in the description too. Thanks for asking and better luck to you and your Basecamp. Loved that little guy!
Good video. Nice job.
Hey there! Great review, thanks for the video! We haven't yet tested the Helinox but we have tested several of the Alite chairs and loved them. Unfortunately, the Mayfly was our least favorite. The simplicity and durability were awesome but we found there to be better options. For anyone interested, our full review can be found here: www.expeditionrecreation.com/gear/alite-designs-mayfly
Great and detailed video!
And, to dewinterize? Do you just hook up the water to the city system and run it through the plumbing (not the water heater, keeping that isolated) until the pink goes away?
David Wilkins For dewinterizing, I actually use the freshwater tank system and the onboard pump to flush the RV antifreeze. You can actually use bleach in water at a safe ratio to either sanitize or disinfect your fresh water tank - then use that water to flush the RV antifreeze. It’s not a huge deal since you’ve already drained your freshwater tank from the winter - but - there’s residual water in your freshwater tank that has sat over the winter. Even though the tanks are safe for holding water, anywhere there’s moisture and un-purified water can lead to mildew or eventually, mold. That’s the logic behind using the freshwater tank to clear the lines during dewinterizing. As for the process: I use a tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water. (You can do your research on the ratio to confirm and also lookup the fresh tanks total gallons). Once filled with the bleach/water ratio, turn the pump on and let SOME of the freshwater/bleach flow through the hot and cold pipes on all fixtures (dont’ forget the outside shower & toilet) - enough to clear all the RV antifreeze out of all lines and fixtures - then I let it sit for a few hours. Some will say you should let it sit for 24 hours - it’s up to you. I usually let mine sit for 4 or 5 since the trailer has only been sitting for about 4 months. After the bleach water has sat in the freshwater tank to sanitize, I then use the outside shower to clear the rest of the bleachwater into 5 gallon buckets and dump it (doing this so you don’t ultimately fill your blackwater tank prematurely). Now, you’ve A) flushed the RV antifreeze, and B) sanitized your lines further by flushing bleachwater through...but there is still bleach in the lines, of course. From here, I fill the fresh water tank 2 more times. Each time, flushing just a few gallons though the inside fixtures to now have a lesser bleach-to-water ratio in the lines. Of course the remainder bulk of water I clear out using the outside shower (again to save space on the black tanks). After that 2nd fresh-water-only fill (technically the 3rd tank fill), I open the hot water tank and close the bypass valve. This way, new, fresh water will flow through the hot water tank, too. (just make sure you are using the hot and cold fixture valves now to clear water - you should have been before, too). After this final fill, the bleach-to-water ration is so small it’s undetectable (and more than safe to drink). I can’t smell or taste any bleach at this point. (ps, I use the buckets of water to water the plants or something useful) If you follow the above, you’ve effectively cleared the rv fluid, sanitized your water lines, sanitized your freshwater tank and haven’t hit your capacity on your blackwater tank yet so when you pull into your first campground for the season, you have some room to spare ;).
Dan Moller excellent! I’m still a newbie, and these instructions are very clear and detailed and will be easy to follow. Thank you very much!
@@MollerFarm Hi Dan, thanks again for your great winterizing video! On de-winterizing you mention 1 tablespoon of bleach per freshwater gallon...how are you adding that mix into the Basecamp freshwater system? I assume that you are using a tube and funnel, with the measured bleach ratio in a bucket....correct?
@@larsmeyer1950 Super late reply here, sorry. You assumed correctly - I just use a funnel and put the bleach in first. Then I run the hose water through the inlet to wash the inlet and dilutes the bleach at the same time. Hope you're enjoying your basecamp!
