My dad always called Tom Kite, "the nerd", but I know he liked Tom because he seemed like a nice guy and always went out of his way to acknowledge the crowd. We watched, "The nerd" play one of the finest final rounds ever in major championship history that day. I remember almost EVERYONE on ABC's telecast, basically giving Colin Montgomerie the title when he finished early at even par. While Jeff Sluman slid in at minus one, Kite played an amazing round in SICK conditions to win his only major, incredible in itself considering how great Tom was.
It was an absolute brutal 4th round. The winds played havoc with greens that were already rock hard smooth. Just to finish with a 72 was a mammoth achievement
Remember being so chuffed for kite back then, had years of hurt in majors and finally landed one in brutal conditions.....just makes me feel old watching this now
@@StFidjnr 85 sandwich.... The 10th had a complete meltdown... But I was routing for lyle then. Anyway, glad he won but I think he should have won more
Do you have the 2-3 hour final round video? It actually show that its was a extreme grind, a war of attrition with the golf course and the weather conditions.
@The Snowman My mistake! It was Fuzzy Zoeller! It was a comment about the dinner after Tiger's Masters win one year, as winner you get to pick the meal for dinner. "He's doing quite well, pretty impressive. That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it." Zoeller then smiled, snapped his fingers, and walked away before turning and adding, "or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."[7] K-Mart and Dunlop ceased sponsoring Zoeller after the inciden
@3:46, Tom Cruize cameo!!! Wow!! Tom Kite deserved so many more wins. The guy is pure class. And he's a hell of a golfer!!! He's a wonderful player and Tom's short game is pure.
50:35 Look at the DIVOT! Even the divots are being blown wildly by the wind. Also, not sure this is a popular opinion but I rather enjoyed the many clever dad jokes in this one.

Pebble Beach certainly is a great course. I'm not so sure, though, that a course that few can afford to play, or perhaps even be allowed to play, is "America's Course". Great course for the U.S. Open, though.
It was once. In early 80s I played it for $50. Now I think it's $1000. It's funny how golf started for the average guy in Scotland, then for the rich in the US, then average guys could play, then it became just for the rich again. Most of the great pros until the 60s were from poor backgrounds. Now all the pros are rich before they even started. Sucks
Congratulations Tom I remember that open. Just goes to show that hard work unbridled determination and sticking to your game plan can do for you.

I watched this. Absolutely brutally windy conditions. Kite was a deserved champion in a major finally. Nice one.

Ray Floyd was one of my favs. I had forgotten he was in the mix going into Sunday
Good golfer but a racist, can't forget his Tiger Woods comment.

Fantastic clutch play. 👏
The title makes it sound like Tom Kite literally strapped on a jet pack and flew over Pebble Beach

Tom kite redeem himself from his 1989 faux pax at oak hill where he made a triple bogey at a par 4 hole on sunday while leading
No mention of Jack Nicklaus congratulating Monty on winning, quite a few hours before it finished?
Always thought Kite looked like a younger sober Harry Carey.
He looks like my grandmother. Hahaha Or she him.
