- Here is a buried vhs tape that I found recently. I enjoyed watching the 1993 US Open from Baltusrol because it allowed me to see Payne Stewart again. This is Lee Janzen's first US Open victory. I also enjoy the ABC Sports coverage especially with Jim McKay, Brent Musburger, Peter Alliss, Peter Jacobsen, Jack Whitaker, Jack Nicklaus, Mark Rolfing, Jerry Pate, Judy Rankin, and Bob Rosburg.
I also appreciate the love that is shown to Payne Stewart by the gallery throughout the day. New York fans say what is on their minds and when Payne was on the 14th hole expecting the ball to "kick straight" a fan shared an encouraging word. Paul Azinger on 16 tee shared a word too. This was a year that for the final round Jack Nicklaus was the color commentator with Jim McKay for most of the back 9. Nicklaus won the US Open back in 1980 at Baltusrol, and it was good to see him be encouraging and critical of play by the players.
Thanks for watching The Knackered Golfist.
the old aerial flyovers are so much better than the computer generated models of the holes, wish that they brought this back
so cool to have Jack break it down shot by shot. Payne was such a good guy and golfer really miss him.
thank you for posting this
Stewart's putt on 16 after Janzen pitched in might be the best putt I've ever seen that didn't go in. And if you'd given Lee Janzen a tennis racquet when he was 10 years old, Stewart would be a 4-time US Open champion.
Well said hahaha
Yes. That putt on 16 that Payne missed was amazing. More amazing was Payne’s reaction to the putt not going in.
What a commentary team, best ever and also a certain jack nicklaus!!!!
Awesome footage! I love a NYC area major championship! That intro essay by the legendary Jim McKay hit me hard, New York will never look right without the Twin Towers.
I miss Payne Stewart.
Me too.
Excellent content, if you have more please upload
This is when the game was fun this is when the cost to play the game was reasonable
Thanks for the upload, something about the players then, more approachable, real people unlike the overpaid 'stars' of the current PGA Tour.
Both Payne Stewart and Tom Watson were hugely popular here in the UK,true gentlemen in the best traditions of the game.
How refreshing to go back and see the scale of the game in check. Janzen needed to flush a 2-iron just to clear the bunker (Tillinghast's "great hazard") on 17.
That 1993 us open is one that I always will remember. I’m in California and it was the year after Kite’s win in 92. I actually look back on this event with more fondness. I loved the ABC Sports presentation of the US Open back then.
“Pushed it but the wind held it up”.
"the game in check". get off your high horse. daly was averaging 300 plus and hitting 9 irons into par 5s at the time. janzen isnt a long hitter.
@@mooneulogy8717 for John Daly to reach the 17th in 2 during the 1993 US Open was remarkable back then. No one else could. US Open set up was much more difficult than a regular pga tour event.
cheers
I'm 51 now I remember growing up in the '80s playing golf 50 cents for a pull cart $3.75 to play nine holes golf courses were way more interesting The professional golfers were way more interesting.... Current status of golf pricing themself out of the market golf courses closing left and right because they can't maintain this 75 00 yard golf courses most of the golf courses are pretty boring nowadays.....
