This is what made me find joy in basketball as a kid. I was bored with how I grew up watching my
Local HS team play and most colleges, but I noticed that the NBA players, they “made things happen” much more frequently instesd if just running sets over and over for the sake of running a set. I realized the most efficient way to make a direct impact was to simply get past my defender, draw another defender, and read where the open shot would be. There was just something so simple yet effective about it. I was young and admittedly a little too obsessed with passing, so if I had been a bit more open to just taking the open shot after beating my man at least 5-10 times a game, that would have made things even better I know now. That being said, after honing my drive and dish game I went on to set and then break my varsity assist record with 16 and then 18, I had 14 assists in a half, 9 in a qtr, and a plethora of other high volume assists and potential assist or points created games. All basically because of the drive and dish. I do think working on your peripheral vision and sort of just having a feel for the game can also help, always innately looking for that little opening to slip one past the defenders head, but even without those tools just being able to draw help and “dump it off” is so impactful as this video states. Personally I think the most important part, at least for me, was putting in so much time honing my 1 on 1 blow by moves. If you can realllly shake your man, it just opens EVERYTHING up. Become a player who forces the D to constantly try new defenders to stay in front of you, and you will be amazed at how easy everybring else will come.
Oh, also work your butt off on being a good shooter too. I didn’t truly fathom why my coaches tried to press that on me during my career. I simply didn’t care to shoot. It was that simple. I didn’t “like” shooting and I was so rigid about it. But once I grew up and on my own naturally found myself desiring to improve my 3 ball and mid range, it legit blew my mind how much it made the game easier for me tenfold. I had been used to eventually having my defenders back off on my once they realized that I was hard to contain but didn’t like to shoot. So my impact would eventually fall off once teams had played me a few times. Once I incorporated the ability to hit 3-5 3s casually, it was as if defenders were playing me SO close. They didn’t want to leave any space. And of course, this made me true desire of beating my man off the dribble to get to the rim hilariously easy. It has led to a lot of “what am I supposed to DO??? Too fast, but can’t leave him open”.
I share this personal story not because I am anything special. Didn’t even play college ball. I share it because maybe it can help someone like me who could have gone from good to GREAT if they had truly learned to balance their game and hone a few areas to perfection.
