  • Richard Hawley’s dad was a guitarist who played with John Lee Hooker and Memphis Slim so he grew up in a home full of old blues, rock and roll and country. He started playing Sheffield clubs himself at the age of 12. A third of his records belonged to his parents, many saved when his dad had to sell some in the steel workers’ strike of 1980. He was born in 1967 but firmly rooted in the ‘50s. This podcast was recorded in his music room where pulls out a handful of his favourite singles and shows us a 1955 jukebox so hardcore it’ll “play a pizza” and a Bond-style portable record-player in a suitcase. And talks about his new double ‘best of’ compilation ‘Now Then’. Also included …
… a story about Sonny Boy Williamson that’ll make your eyes water.
… the revelation of “the source of the rock and roll river”.
    … a Monkees-related gift from Mike Nesmith.
… tales about his Uncle Frank who ran the Mojo Club in Sheffield.
… meeting Steve Mackay (of Pulp) when he was working in the record section of a Sheffield ironmongers.
… the old bluesman who spat blood into a spittoon before he went on.
… the effect of seeing the Cramps and Echo & the Bunnymen.
… getting the call from Peaky Blinders about recording Dylan’s Ballad Of A Thin Man.
… and some records the whole wide world should hear, among them …
Brand New Cadillac by Vince Taylor
Me And My Chauffeur by Big Mama Thornton
How Much Land (Does A Man Need) by Frank Minion
Ramblin’ Rose by Beauregard and the Tuffs
    Dear Dad by Chuck Berry
My Baby’s Coming Home by BB King
Tainted Love by Dave Phillips & the Hot Rod Gang
I Got Loaded by Little Bob
    Flatfoot Sam by Oscar Wills
The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark
… and “the funkiest record ever made!”

Richard Hawley is that rarest of artist: both insanely talented but also a decent, humble, intelligent, genuinely informed and a warm human being. That was, as ever with him, fascinating, funny and informative.

Brilliant! - Richard Hawley is a wonderful artist - his records are unique - evocative, soulful, beautifully recorded - many of his songs are small masterpieces (including the one he wrote for Shirley Bassey) with gorgeous melodies, his lyrics are incredibly poetic and evocative. He's bloody marvellous. My wife and I love listening to him as much as any other artist I can think of. I imagine sitting in Fagan's with pint in hand, listening to him chatting about his favourites would be time well spent! Thanks everyone, very enjoyable interview!

This was just superb!!! Richard is a total hero! I had the good fortune to interview him on a couple of occasions, and each time he was charming, gracious, generous with his time, knowledgeable, and very, very funny! Hands down my favourite edition of this excellent podcast 🙌🙌🙌

Seen/read/heard him interviewed a few times and he's always good value. But only got into his music by accident - someone on Mortimer & Whitehouse 'Gone Fishing' is obviously a Richard fan as they've used a lot of his songs as background music. Open up your door, Darling wait for me, Last orders etc. Very emotive and beautiful music.

His dad was brilliant, I played with him many times over the years in Sheffield.

Loving the vinyl talk ! I’m 45 & worked my way back by starting out on bands like the cramps’ the gun club & the fall ! Through them referencing people like link Wray or bo diddly I then got into old music like that ! I love all types of music but always vinyl !!!!

  • @spookydirt

some of those song suggestions from Mr Hawley were really rather good. I've gone and ordered his jukebox compilation off the back of this chat.

  • @KevKavanagh

Seriously one of your best. A few hours talking records and drinking with this bloke could easily turn in to days, wonderful! I was taking notes and I'm now off down that rabbit hole, I might be gone some time!

An excellent episode like this reminds us how good Word in the Attic can be. I've missed them, thank you.

  • @edwardmulholland7912

    Love Richard,

  • @danieladams9950

Funny - and unusual - how few records David and Mark were aware of in Richard's collection. How could a Sheffield boy be so grounded in Bluesology?

  • @LeonDonnelly23

What an interesting and funny man. Please have him back on soon. 👍

  • @brianharris7243

Really good interview- I recommend pausing and playing the tracks Richard shows- well cool.

  • @michaeldunne3379

Listened to Beauregard and the Tuffs. Fantastic!

  • @drychaf

I bought most (all?) copies of The Word, and lots and lots of Mojos over the years and TODAY I find this channel! Sub'd.
