Regenerative Braking - Paddle Switches, Drive Modes

Select Kia models have a Regenerative Braking System.
In this video, we’ll discuss how Regenerative Brakes function,
And how to vary their levels using the steering wheel mounted paddle switches and drive modes.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING is typically used in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It uses an electric motor to take the vehicle’s kinetic energy - its forward momentum - and converts that into energy during deceleration and braking.
When that occurs, the magnetic resistance in the electric motor provides the braking force and that energy is then stored in the high-voltage battery which can help extend the overall driving range.
Regenerative braking is not like conventional braking. It does not apply the vehicle’s brake system.
Regenerative braking begins when you take your foot off the accelerator using the magnetic resistance of the electric motor to slow the vehicle.
That’s why regenerative braking feels stronger than conventional braking - but that “feel” can be adjusted… and the “stronger” the regenerative braking, the more electricity is sent to recharge the battery.
The left and right PADDLE SWITCHES behind the steering wheel are used to adjust the regenerative braking level from zero to three, max, and iPedal on or off.
When you pull and hold the right paddle switch, Smart Regeneration will turn on. The AUTO indicator will be displayed.
The left side switch INCREASES regenerative braking and deceleration feel by one level with each time you pull and release the switch.
The right-side switch DECREASES regenerative braking and deceleration.
When the REGENERATIVE BRAKING is set at LEVEL ZERO, there is no regenerative braking, so the vehicle feels like it is coasting.
LEVEL ONE is the lowest amount of regenerative braking.
While LEVEL TWO and LEVEL THREE offer higher amounts of regenerative braking and may take some time to get used to.
You need to be aware that when the transmission is shifted into DRIVE, the regenerative braking system is automatically activated based on your pre-set preferences and the current road conditions.
Select Kia EVs have several different DRIVE MODES - Normal… Eco… Sport… and Snow (if equipped).
The Snow mode is only adjustable between ZERO, which is no regenerative braking, and ONE.
ECO, Normal and Sport mode are all adjustable from zero to three.
