    Every 49er player that was interviewed after the game said them going for it on 4th down made them feel like they were giving them an opening. I bet if you polled 49ers they were all glad to see Campbell going for it on 4th down, I know I felt that way. I just think when you have a chance to put it back up to 17 point lead and you're playing against some good players like Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, etc. you're also giving them a chance to make a play and swing the game. I think you can say "it's our process, the statistics, etc" all you want but it's possible that process isn't refined enough to include other variables. It's hubris to think your methodology is 100% correct in 100% of the situations you might face. I think in this situation it was absolutely the wrong decision.

    Even if your rep is to always gamble on 4th you understand in a big, big game what momentum is and probability within that game. I couldn’t believe when he Campbell didn’t take the first field goal and I was astounded when he didn’t take the second. He definitely cost them the game.

    I'm so tired already of hearing "Going for it on 4th down is what got them here." What got them to that game was having the 4th best rushing attack in the league, and a handful of really clutch performances from Goff. Dan never had a crystal ball, and he didn't have one in this game. You don't have to play stupid to play aggressive. They completely abandoned the run in the third quarter and immediately found trouble and lost all of the momentum. Both of those are on the coaching staff. They'll never see a better opportunity to win the super bowl.

      Why is taking the FG "not trusting" his players. Isn't the kicker also your player. It's 4th and 10 in The 2nd quarter and you have a chance to go up 3 scores and you "go for it" rather than kicking a field goal because you are "trusting your players".

    I believe the analytics only suggests "FG vs. 1st down" percentages...not "we're 8 minutes into the 3rdQ and putting us back to a 3 score lead puts a LOT more pressure on SF". I'd have rather done the latter. They (SF) came out from halftime and score a FG, if we kick a FG that's 8 minutes they wasted...with 3 scores still to get.

    The 49ers did not out play the Lions. Lions coaches out thought the situation. Harbaugh's Wolverines ran the ball exclusively in the second half against a team that couldn't stop it. The Lions ( David Montgomery especially) were killing them on the ground and killing clock. They had 130 yards plus at half and just stopped. They lost to the Cowboys the end way.

    The 49ers' defense played well against the 4th down plays but Campbell should have elected to kick the FGs. You should be aggressive but also use your sensibility that your risky moves don't hurt the team.

    • @greglamm5986
      @greglamm5986 8 місяців тому

      That's the difference between being aggressive and being reckless. Not every decision is a strategic one. Sometimes you have to be tactical. Granted, neither of the FGs attempts the Lions passed up were chip shots. But if you make them, you go back up by 3 scores, or later in the game, you tie the score. It would keep momentum from swinging to the 49ers (if you make them). They ended up losing by three. You can't win every big pot. Sometimes the best play is to lay it down.

    You gamble to win sure.. but we already won... we had that game... now you do anything you can to stay in that spot... you match that FG ... 27-10... maybe they score a TD 27-17... now there's maybe 10 minutes left in the game. Our guys still feel good. We're getting the ball back with a 2 possession lead.. The pressure is still on them and they are sweating big time... No way anyone can make this anything else... Dan is the reason we lost that game. It was his worst day.... doesn't happen often. 3rd and goal with 1:02 left in the game. Down 10. You can NOT every call a time out. That is not an option... Unless you think you have a decent chance at an onside kick... Run the ball... I wouldn't but I don't hate that call. But you have to have the 4th down call ready. Guys have to know we need there to be 40+ seconds on the clock when we snap the ball on 4th down. We would have been able to use our time outs and a shot for 4 or more plays... That's not ideal, but with our guys we would have a shot. Nope, I like Dan a lot. I don't want another coach... But I don't want this to get blown over like oh that's what he does... NO NO NO. His JOB on game day is to keep us in the best possible position to win and make all the right calls accordingly. Last night he did not, and sadly it wasn't even close. We were prepared for the Niners. Our guys balled out. We just couldn't survive that massive momentum swing.

Is it really sensationalism to question the many odd decisions Campbell made in this game? They had the game in hand, they were pounding the SF defense and doing whatever they wanted. From the moment they missed the 4th down, the game 100% changed.

    -4th and 2, the "play call" got Reynolds WIDE OPEN for easy pass. He dropped it.
    -50yd TD, the "play call" put defender in perfect position and ball hit Vildor right in the face. That's a missed INT. (1 of 4 dropped INTs)

    I have been coaching football for 20 years over the last 30 years! One thing I notice is “football trends” like the zone read offense and then this term “analytics” comes into the football world. Hearing broadcasters and reporters use that work and coaching casing game plans over “the analytics” is one of those tends. I watched the Lions get stopped on numerous 4th downs this year. Yes, the my got some, but it has nothing to do with analytics. It’s judgement! I am a Niners fan and I was concerned the Lions would convert those 4th down calls. I knew FGs on both those call would have added to the Lions’ lead and when stopped, I said “that was a stupid call!” I respect Coach Campbell but I think he felt pressure to go for it because of his reputation of being a gambler. Coach the game and throw the “analytics” out the window. Yes, taking chances is part of the game but so is smart football.

In reality 49er coaching mismanagement in the 1st half entirely created a false opportunity for the Lions to win - an opportunity that the Lions did not deserve and certainly did nothing to earn with their play on the field. ill give him the first one. i was not about that decision but it ended up being the right call but his receiver let him down. instead of taking that into account as a potential sign of things to come, he doubled down trying instead to keep his poorly playing players confidence up. he worried way too much about having his players backs and he lost sight of winning the football game. hes still young and i hope he does truly learn from this and become a better coach, although he told the media he wouldnt do anything different, which I dont love. as HC, sometimes you need to be the big dawg in the room and do something unconventional when shit hits the fan. look at Saban in tht title game benching Hurts and putting in Tua. Put Dan Campbell in Saban's position tht game and he loses that game 10 out of 10 times. glaring weakness tht hopefully he improves on instead of being bullheaded and just sticking to your plan. just because you make minor tweaks to a plan along the way doesnt make you a liar or unloyal and he needs to understand that.

    Before the 49ers game I worried about Lions AWFUL secondary and their 31st ranked league WORST tackling. In the second half we saw their awful secondary in action, giving up play after play including a horrible 51 yard Purdy pass that BOUNCED off the face mask (??!!!) of the inept Lions secondary player (who should have intercepted it) that resulted in a TD. Plus so many missed tackles and dropped passes that you could fill 10 pages with a list of them. So, was I surprised in the CHOKE JOB of the Lions PLAYERS? No, not really. The coaching got them there and was fine in this game- the PLAYERS simply chocked. 49ers played well, but the game was GIFTED to them.

      whats more concerning is him saying he wouldnt do anything different. you lost the game. why wouldnt you do anything different if you lost? i get that Reynolds choked but because of the lead they had, MCDC had plenty of decisions the remainder of the game to still come out on top and he got every single one of them wrong. its clear he doesnt have a backup plan. all his eggs are in one basket and if that doesnt work then he has no idea what to do so he just keeps trying to get Plan A to work. if he just puts his head in the sand instead of learning from this then we are doomed. he has to get better in tht area if he wants to win a super bowl.

      And Detroit won the 1st half..SF won the 2nd half...I'm confused why asshat commentators and thier followers think SF SHOULD HAVE lost either game. I'm just saying.

      That's the problem. His ego. He knew if they converted everyone would be talking about him. Not the players or the play. Just all about the gambler coach Dan. Lions are talented but immature. They needed a coach to get them through and go to the Superbowl. Dan Campbell needed to coach the situation in front of them not in their past.
