It's because k is cation and MnO4 is anion....as k is positively charged ion we are taking only MnO4 which is negative ( since it is electro negative method which is negative -)hope you can understand...

It's because K is positive while MnO4 is negative.
We have to take the negatively charged one because we're doing the ion electron method
