James wrote this for his father (Yep, that's him in the video) who was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease and they were having no luck finding a donor for a transplant. Because of the popularity of the song a distant relative of theirs got tested and matched for the transplant. His dad is fine now. The part of the that says "I'm not your son, you're not my father", keep in mind that both James as well as father were in the military. Two grown men saying goodbye would be the type of stiff upper lip British soldiers have. GREAT reaction!! 🎶💖😎

I appreciate this reaction soo much! My brother is a police officer who was just in a horrific car accident on duty! He is currently recovering from a traumatic brain injury, he died twice on the way to the hospital. I believe he was visiting my dad (who died 8 yrs ago) because in his therapy session last week he made me promise to tell dad he was okay because he knew he was worried about him! He’s getting stronger every day, but he still has the moments between this world and that 😢

James and his father were both in the army, just like me and my dad. "I am not your son, you are not my father" was their way to say goodbye when one of them had to deploy. This song hits me like a freight train every time. My dad fought for his country in a war so I wouldnt have to. He chased the monsters away for a whole nation, and for me. The monsters chased him in his dreams for the rest of his life. RIP my dear father and god bless every veteran out there.

Having lost my parents and other loved ones in the family, I shed tears when I listen to this song. It so easy to see you are a tender hearted man who is not afraid to show your feelings. Treasure each day with your dad. Having lost my spouse recently, we did not let a day go by without saying I Love You to one another. Especially since my better half was so ill and we knew what the outcome of that illness would be. Bless you.

He told me that him seeing me so strong when the rest of the family was breaking down made him feel safe. Little did he know i was breaking down too i just couldnt let him see that. I had to chace his monsters away. I had to be the strong one now. This song is so good. (He is a lot better now but still recovering)

This song hit me hard. I just heard it for the first time yesterday and have listened to it about 20 times since. The reason is I lost my Dad just over a year ago. He came home to my house on Hospice and lasted 3 days and I stayed every minute with him. As my Dad started to pass it was just me and him in the room and he knew right before he told me it was his time to go and I would be ok. When he started to feel himself slip away I saw panic for a moment so I just kept rubbing his chest and told him to keep looking at me as I didn't know what else to do but knew it would be what he would do for me and did that for about 5 minutes never breaking eyes with him until he passed. It was one of the worst and best moments of my life.

My heart goes out to you Roman. Yeah it was like that with my mom. She would go unresponsive a lot and be in hospital a lot for that. As she had early dementia and infections would put her in a weird place. So many times, she was like why wouldn’t your dad talk to me, he only wanted to talk to you. My father had passed 12 years before. I was surprised because she was honest in what she said. I told her, mom, he would crawl over me to get to you, if he does talk to me ill pass along the message i promise. She was like i love you both so much, you always take care of me. It hurts, but in the end, it means you mean a lot to them in that state. Don’t know what more to say, it is hard, but in the end you are there walking them out. Or at least it as. The best you can do is walk the ones out of their life as they walked you into yours. Thank you.

This song brought me to my knees. My father's relationship with me when I was young was an abusive one. So much so that I spent many years not talking to him. My father spent the last years of his life living as a hermit in the woods of Maine. He was found outside his cabin months after his death. What was left of him at least. In our last conversation he tried to reach out to me to connect as father and son. I told him that I didn't think of him as my father. He replied "But I am your father!" I said "My father is six hundred feet tall and broke bones and walls and mothers. It's best for you that I don't think of you as my father. To me you are an older friend that I share a similar sense of humor with that I speak to once a year (if that) on father's day."
Eerily similar to " I'm not your son, you're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye.
I knew his mistakes, he knew some of mine. I could not forgive or forget. He was my monster.

Watching this video and seeing you cry makes me feel like it's okay to cry because I was there with my Dad and our whole Family when his Dad died in a hospital bed and that's the most painful memory I have and this song makes me think of my Father watching his Dad die. I can't possibly imagine what was going through my Dads mind in that moment. But I fear the day I lose my Dad. I don't ever want to lose him. My dad is 80 and is very frail. I'm 40 and he has been my hero, my idol my entire life. I inherited my monster from him. They were his and now they are mine. I've chased them away every day of my life I have been an adult not kept by him. It was his job when I was young. Now it my job. And over the last couple of years I've made an effort to see him every week to just chase his monster away so he can be at peace at least in the late part of this life. Your story broke my heart. I went through a similar experience with my mom after her hip surgery. I called her to tell her I was coming to visit her at the hospital, and she whispered, "NO! Don't come! Call the police. They kidnapped me and broke my leg so I can't leave. I couldn't live with myself if you get kidnapped, too." This went on for a couple of days, and this was when we found out about her dementia. She returned to her usual self (mostly) after about a week or two and lived with me for 11 years after this. It was hard working and caring for her, but so worth it. It wasn't all work, though; we did a lot of fun things, too, and I don't regret one second of the time I got to spend with her.

My dad is an extremely complicated man. He watched & cared for my mother at age 27, the love of his life, be terminally diagnosed with glioblastoma shortly after my birth, through the next year until she passed away peacefully at home with us. That experience changed him fundamentally from everyone who knew him before and after. I wish I got to know the before version of him but I did not. My childhood was rough...he was very controlling with me but not my older brother. I moved out at 15 and have had to periodically set stiff boundaries with him throughout my life. One thing I will forever be grateful to him for is that he NEVER ONCE hid or tried to disguise death & dying to me or my brother as something else to us. He was an engineer when my mom got sick & after her death went back to school and got his Master's degree in social work specializing in oncology & hospice care. With literally anything my dad did in life, he either hit it out of the ballpark perfectly or dropped a nuke on it fucking it all up. There is no in-between with him. BUT he ALWAYS ALWAYS got the dying & death right. He is now 74 and diagnosed with dementia. Our worst nightmare but something I just knew in my bones would happen. He had made his wishes VERY CLEAR when I was a teen that regardless of age he did NOT want life extending care ever - only palliative care....and that he wanted to die by age 75. He is currently starving himself to death before he can no longer choose to eat or drink. I understand and accept this. I've been a caregiver to developmentally disabled, mentally ill, elderly & hospice patients my entire life. He made his decision decades ago and as OCD as he is he renewed those wishes every 6 months with a notary and everything since I was a teen. He will never admit or talk about his mistakes or the trauma he inflicted on me but I've accepted that, took me many years to do so, and I do know he KNOWS the pain he caused. He's done incredible harm to me but he's also been my ABSOLUTE CHAMPION when I needed it most...an INCREDIBLY complicated relationship to be sure. This song absolutely guts me every time I put it on but it also soothes me in a weird sort of way. Like most relationships in life - it's complicated and messy but this song has helped me cope. Thank you for your reaction.

This song was really hard on me. The last time I saw my father was when I was walking out of the front door, my father an old school Marine was weeping in a chair next to the door begging me to stay. I was in the Army and had to return to my unit because we were deploying. My father passed away three weeks later.

I cried so hard last night while watching this video. It hit so close to my life.
My huband fought Adult Diabetes from the moment he was born. He wanted to live, see his children & grandchildren. He was trying to stay alive ,he had a double kidney & pancreas transplant, then another kidney transplant. He went through so much pain trying to live. He ended up passing away at his 3rd transplant. I cried as this song was being played, I cried for our children & grandson ( who we raised) when they had to say goodbye to their Dad😢😢

If you have good parents, CHERISH THEM! Some people do not realize that having good parents is such a BLESSING. My parents do not care whether I'm alive or dead. One is a drug addict and the other is a greedy, aggressive, pervert. I'm 44 now with a family of my own. Been married 23yrs and counting, but I'm still working on healing myself bc of my parents. A big part of that healing is forgiveness. Like I said, IF YOU HAVE GOOD LOVING PARENTS, CHERISH THEM. GOD BLESS.❤

James was a Captain in the British Army, his father had been a Colonel, I believe when James was of to Yugoslavia as part of the UN contingency (he was the first tank into Kosovo) his father departing remark was “your not my son I’m not your father, we’re jus two men saying goodbye” which James amended to include in the song.
James’s father (yes him in the video) had been a kidney donor and later developed stage 4 kidney failure and no match could be found and this song is Jame’s goodbye to him, James donated all the proceeds from this song to the services charity “Help for Hero’s”. This recording received worldwide exposure and a distant relative in Australia heard it and the story and got in touch, turns out they were a match and Jame’s father received his operation and is doing fine. So in some sense this song did chase the monsters away.
Apparently after this recording the entire crew were in tears, his father said something like “what the hell is everyone crying for? I’m still alive.”
