CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) shows up in Jordan to meet with Hani Salaam (Mark Strong) about borrowing their newly acquired asset.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Fresh off of their success with director Martin Scorsese's The Departed, star Leonardo DiCaprio and screenwriter William Monahan team with director Ridley Scott for this screen adaptation of David Ignatius' novel Body of Lies. When CIA operative Roger Ferris (DiCaprio) uncovers evidence indicating that a major terrorist leader may be operating out of Jordan, he enlists the aid of CIA veteran Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) in infiltrating the elusive saboteur's vast underground network. During the course of his dangerous mission, Ferris gradually comes to question how much he can trust his presumed allies -- who include not just Hoffman, but the outwardly helpful head of Jordanian intelligence as well.

The American who's ready to walk away at a moment's notice, burn as many assets as needed for instant gratification and doesn't really care about anything else other than his own operation, regardless of his professed 'global' concerns.
Absolutely. Even wardrobe works to tell the story of who these people are: Hani is trim and well tailored while Ed is overweight and frumpy. Also, in terms of physicality of the roles, Hani presents as self-assured, measured, and still, while Ed is spastic, restless, and uncontrolled.

Ed was slippery pos in this movie, Crowe nailed it. As good as Crowe and Decaprio were, Mark Strong was the highlight of the movie for me.
Great subtle facial acting at 2:06. Up to this point Hani puts a cool facade when taking to Hoffman. Then Hoffman shows the picture that Hani didn’t have and we see a small crack in Hani’s otherwise impeccable armor.
This was my favorite part and the best rebuttal" In matters of intelligence Edward you are speaking to the king".:))
Hani: You Americans...you are incapable of secrecy because you are a democracy.
Ed Hoffman looks at Hani's bodyguard at that moment in a way to point out what kind of secrecy is Jordanian Intelligence capable of when there are clearly more than a required number of people in a highly confidential meeting concerning sharing of intelligence assets. And, at that very point in time, Hani's bodyguard returns Ed Hoffman's sarcastic look with his menacing one in a way saying,"Oh you... do not even doubt me with a stray thought of treason because I am certainly most faithful to the job that my country has entrusted me." Also picks up the matchbox sort of metaphorically speaking with body language that "you dare to go down that road and I will be ready with a lit match to burn your world." Excellent screenplay and superb direction.
yeah i saw this as well, this movie is so great, fantastic actors and scenario.

And then compare this movie with the kind of crap our country produces. That movie "Uri" was such a stupid film. Too much hype, zero substance. Zero attention to detail. I really wish there were better Indian movies, 'cause I would love to see them. At least The Family Man does things somewhat nicely.

@@muhammadzeeshanmushtaq670It is indeed a fantastic movie amongst my choice of a few others that are centred around the American versus Middle Eastern (absolutely avoidable) conflicts. Syriana & The Kingdom are the two others.
I have a great deal of respect for the pure Arabs who while mindful of the greatest natural resource of all times (crude oil) that the lands that they inhabit have been blessed with are also demanding of the fact that the world powers treat them with utmost respect and humility whilst asking them to part with some of that resource to manage their country's respective energy needs.
But on the contrary, much of the white world has been treating them with utter disrespect and downright humiliation. They have even attempted many times at bringing false disrepute to them in a bid to arm twist the Arabs into giving them that highly valuable resource virtually free of cost.
There is a beautiful book titled - 'Why Muslims hate America and what the West can do about it' - by Group Captain Arjun Das of India that sheds some much needed light of unbiased knowledge upon this fact. Please do read it if you get the chance to do so.
I love the routine Ed Hoffman does where he tilts his head down and looks past his glasses when he's serious ... but looks back up when he's bullshitting! 😎

Beautiful Movie indeed! All actors were on spot and played their rules beautifully.
"Insa" is an Arabia word means "Forget it" however we use it in so many different ways like the way Hani uses it in this scene which means "do not even dream about it" also can be used to describe a beautiful thing like a car for example it means "I can't even describe how beautiful the car is" also used to end a discussion or not enter it in the first place. However, sometimes it is a polite way to say "fuck off" or "impossible".
The only thing that annoyed me in this movie is the way they portrayed Amman (the capital of Jordan) which was the total opposite of the reality unless they focused only on portraying refugees camps.
Aman seems beautiful in the movie. The hotels pictured in the movie especially at the end where hani tells Ferris he won't help him seems beautiful. Would love to visit aman
Forget about it!
If I remember correctly, most of the Amman action revolves around the safehouse where a large number of the terrorists were hiding. Would make sense that it saw a high turnover, i.e. people not staying for very long and new folks turning up frequently.
That would be noticed in an urban setting.
Makes a lot more sense in a refugee camp setting, which people may be moving through all the time.
Friend, I would be interested in your impression of Hani's personality and approach as a Jordanian in his position. Mark Strong's portrayal of him impressed me deeply. His American counterparts came across as the cocky representatives of a young nation which thinks it owns the world. We are simply the new British in the region, the neocolonialists who with them overthrew the Iranian government in '54 for their oil setting the current disaster in motion. I can't believe Hani would have supported that endless kind of interference, yet he is working with the Americans. Farris is unusual because he begins to learn Hani's methods, falls for Iesha (sp?), and loves the Middle East. This borders on subversive for a CIA operative because he seems to be questioning the manner and ultimate aims of the Americans. A film following up this one with the same people would have been interesting!
@@chrisdiver6224Your concluding paragraph detailing the storyline is explained beautifully by Di Caprio's character in the final scene when he signs off from the C.I.A. to remain in Jordan forever (almost) with his new found love - Aisha.
Whereby he also sends a friendly warning to his now sudden ex-boss (owing to Di Caprio's on the spot resignation) on calling himself "America" thereby staking claim to the representation of an entire country albeit in his puny individual capacity.
You are absolutely right in your observation of the dubious and downright hideous intelligence methods deployed by the C.I.A. during its early years which gave rise to the many long standing conflicts of the world that continue to drag on even today with many of those conflicts' tributaries having developed and flowing in multiple mutated directions virtually impossible to backtrack upon in an effort to set them right in order to restore world order.
Symbolism in this movie is on the next level -- 1:35 that is some non-verbal intimidation.

Hani saved DiCaprio’s life in this scene, because Karami is how Hani was able to locate where the execution was being staged at the end of the film.
But didn't Hani also deliberately put DiCaprio's life in danger in the first place by literally handing him over to Al Saleem?
Sorry I just very recently watched the movie and I'm still confused about exactly how much Hani knew and from which moment on he takes over the whole thing
@@ankitapaul7347 No. It was DiCaprio who put himself in danger by setting up an asset as a terrorist in order to flush oit Al Salim. Hani faked the kidnapping of DiCaprio’s girlfriend to make DiCaprio lead him to Al-Salim.

+Octavian Augustus Hourigan In my opinion, Crowe is not an excellent actor, but any movie where he's playing a villain, antagonist or just an asshole/douchebag character is a must-see. He is just entertaining as hell playing Edward Hoffman in this movie. Can't wait to see him in The Nice Guys.
