I played 2/5 NL back in 2006 at MGM Vegas with Chris on my right. He could not have been a cooler guy. People were interrupting him in the middle of a hand for a picture or autograph. He never got upset and obliged every request. We laughed and took a few pots off of each other. There was some drunk jackass talking shit to him and Chris felted him. Great time.
Hole Card Camera was a game changer for sure! Watching the older main events before them it is just not the same. Seeing the cards made the game marketable as an event to watch.
I agree. I like that the innovation has continued today - one frustration I have watching older poker videos is that you're not given any info like blind/ante sizes, stack sizes, or positions. Today we usually get all of that.
For me it is the addition of poker commentators and now content creators. Poker is more fun to watch when understanding the basics, which content creators help with. Poker is more fun with jokes, which commentators help with.
Poker after Dark helped the boom, I think that legends with unique style and personality like D Negs, Tony G, Phil Ivey, etc etc helped a lot, Phil Hellmuth with his blow ups and his funny moments, Doug Polk and Joe with the podcasts, and of recent Triton poker has resurged the poker tournament community.
Wrong lol 😂 that movie came out in 98. You can go look at graphs of people entering poker tournaments in the amount of poker rooms that they had before and after Chris moneymaker won. Casinos didn’t start adding more poker tables because of the movie rounders 😂
Rounders didn’t even do that well the year it was released. It was the same year as Saving Private Ryan. It became a cult hit after Moneymaker won the WSOP.
I think the idea is that villain didn't 3-bet preflop, didn't raise flop, called slowly and reluctantly on flop, etc. Enough to consider bludgeoning with the 3-barrel. He can rep A-K, etc, and opponent clearly isn't.
The poker boom of 2003 was a confluence of factors. Moneymaker’s run ignited it, but some other factors that led to it include: -Advances in online poker technology and little regulatory oversight -WPT on the Travel Channel -A good economy where more Americans had disposable income -A lower number of poker rooms creating more games running at any one location
All of the things you mentioned happened after money maker won. Poker was being televised for decades before that. Sites like party poker were already around. Those sites skyrocketed in popularity overnight. Anyone who is playing on them before Christmas money maker one will tell you. The amount of people entering city no tournaments went up almost 1000%.
On the topic of the hand, I think I’m calling, because I think Moneymaker would check a lot of his flush draws on the turn to not get shoved on, and the K is nice removal from 2 pairs and top set.
he has played at the local card house/tourney spot a few times here in kentucky, most people say hes a really nice! he also holds a yearly month long moneymaker tour at the hard rock in cinnci that i regular at, always a lot of action and he also plays cash during the event!
The movie Rounders!! That’s what affected the poker world in a significant way. I played hundreds of hours with you, Jonathan Little,at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas back in the early 2000’s. you were actually easy to play against, (super nit) at the time we referred to nits as “rocks.” Basically if you were in a hand and I didn’t have position I would fold.Lol😂
What are you talking about. Rounders came out in 98. You can clearly track the poker boom to 2003 when Chris moneymaker won the World Series. It’s not even questionable. And if I were to put my house on who would win in a heads up match of poker you or Jonathan. I’m picking Jonathan 10 times out of 10. I wonder your career earnings off of poker 😂 the game needs people like you to keep the cash flowing
Not a bluff I could pull off, but sweet. I think that having many excellent players, including present company, creating content has made the boom crazy.
Thanks for the analysis! I have a quick question: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
The biggest impact to the game as far as bringing in new players and making their main stream. The person responsible for showing players whole cards was Henry Orenstein.
lol when did Brad Owen start playing poker? I wonder? A lot of these people plan on live streams aren’t what I would consider to be a professional poker player. Unlike poker after dark where we would get to see the top professional professionals play each other for large steaks. A lot of these live streams like hustler casino are some of the worst players I’ve seen get televised. They make Chris moneymaker look like Phil Ivey. People like Nick airball Doug Polk rampage Ludacris. All of these people doing live streams or vlogging poker is a direct result of Chris moneymaker winning back in 2003
@ I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with you. My point was the 2003 money maker spark the first boom. I think there’s been a recent huge uptick in interest, and I think that has a lot to do with the vloggers. I did not make any comment on the skill of any particular player. That being said, I would like to play a high stakes game with Air Ball!
@@jeffreylehman1159 yes I would definitely agree with you and that poker has gone through its peaks and valleys. Yes, we are currently on another upswing in popularity because of live streams like you mentioned. And yes, it doesn’t always mean the person is good by any stretch of the imagination. I think Wolfgang has the most watched poker short clip, and it is one of the boring hands you will ever see 😂😂😂 I honestly wonder how many of his followers are actually of age to play poker
I think Rounders was part of the poker boom as well. This is not to say that it was some exemplary display of great poker. It was just great characters. I think people fantasized about being in the card room with the characters in that movie; maybe taking a big pot off of Teddy, or those tourists who sit down with the Chesterfield regs at the big casino. Also, you're absolutely right that the hole-card camera was crucial in building interest.
Is moneymaker not a pro? He was deacribed as not by the commentator but surely moneymaker deserves to be called a pro for having made his $€£ in poker for the last 20 years more than a lot of vloggers? Or does moneymaker only play part time? More credit to CM commentator please!
Rounders is the best poker movie with some of the worst poker being played. Definitely didn’t start the poker boom as much as Chris Moneymakers 2003 win. I used to go with my Father and uncle to the Mayfair Club in the early 90s. It wasn’t one location. It actually moved around a few times over the years. I got to see players like Erik Seidel before he was shown in the Rounders movie. I would always have snacks while waiting for and my name is Joe. So they would call me “Joey Snacks” It’s a shame the club closed before the poker boom really kicked off. I think the Bellagio stole the name and tried to open up a card room called the Mayfair club, but it’s nowhere close to what it used to be when it was underground and you needed to know somebody to get in.
It is funny that you say Shen will not have too many hands containing an 8 that call, when he has K6. Guess an 8 would be at the top of Shen's range and he would not be that strong?
I mean, Moneymaker has a nice story, but I feel I'm not the only one who got interested in the game, watching young Daniel Negreanu crush people in televized cash games.
Shen was capped. His cards might as well be face up. Anyone here calling off your entire stack with a lousy pair on the river? Chris knew that's exactly what Shen had. Shen had to make up his mind: be ready to call every street (opening the door for Chris to bluff) or raise the turn. Passive play don't win no chicken dinners.
:::sitting at a poker table, i look up::: ... Chris Moneymaker has taken seat #1... NO Worries!! I had absolutely NO FEAR....[only because it was a Pai Gow Poker table] ;-)
Big bet on flop. Big bet on turn. Smooth jam on river when backdoor flush comes in. What value does that? Only AQ and even then not always. You backed into a flush betting what on the flop? Call.

Tony G speaking was the greatest thing that ever happened to televised poker.
You got there phil
On your bike
I saw you there during 2nd break on Saturday. You were lamenting that hadn't played a single hand yet. Your videos helped me SAT into the minimain.
Moneymaker is one of the nicest and coolest poker player i have EVER MET.
what impacted the poker world / poker popularity: rounders

High Stakes Poker......with Gabe Kaplan
classic!
I’m confused, you said there are 36 players remaining but only 151 get in the money 1:08. I’m assuming you mean the reverse

WPT had its moment for sure
The WPT was huge as it created year round excitement and visibility for tournaments

I didn't think of the hole cam, was thinking more recent. Yes, watching poker when you don't know the hole cards is watching paint dry excitement.

@gophukyurselvs3621 He didn't say he was better than Little. In fact he said the opposite. He said he avoided Little unless he had position.
I admit I get a kick out of seeing Moneymaker make plays. Just like in the main event!
Not a bluff I could pull off, but sweet. I think that having many excellent players, including present company, creating content has made the boom crazy.
If Shen paid attention to MMs face when he made the call he could have possibly gotten a live tell that he felt uncomfortable with the call.

A legend of a bluff to get someone to fold K pairs over a straight draw.
Crucial to get the faces of poker. Hellmuth, Durr, Ivey, Dnegs etc. Every sport need these players. Less Howard Lederers.

3x pre flop then almost bets pot on flop
