Raging Sea Destroys Promenade @ Aberystwyth West Wales

- Raging sea is destroying the promenade at Aberystwyth A Victorian/Georgian seaside town. The promenade is being torn apart by massive waves driven by strong winds and tidal surge. Video and images capture the state of the promenade at low tide on the 5th of January 2014 but more tidal surges and high winds predicted for this coming weekend. Enjoy the video everyone. Thanks Jackie. I believe the big clean-up has started and many volunteers have offered to help. Not sure if the promenade will ever look the same again as the councils are talking about a new design promenade for the future to prevent this happening again. HH and all the best. Tony

Thanks Richard, the promenade was lovely before this big storm and don't think its going to be open to the public this summer with all the repairs to be carried out. There's even talk about an all new promenade planned.

Thank you. I'm so glad someone at least is having nice weather, it seems everywhere is experiencing some freak weather changes at the moment.
i lived in Rhyl in the 1980s and the whole coast was destroyed by the sea, it pushed about a mile or so maybe more taking out my school/infact all schools and the town centre was under water by nearly 4 or 5 feet, [probably lower] i was young "around" 6 yrs old but still remember it well. you wont find much about the history of it for some reason, same with the marina lake disaster either "which" i was also living near it when it happened.
First of all thanks for watching and sharing your experience from your childhood. I had a quick search for this disaster at Rhyl and your right there isn't much information but did find some images of nearby Towyn when it flooded in the 90s. I traveled 40 miles to see and record the devastation in Aberystwyth but was worth it i think.
Wow . That must have been scary for the people living there . I hope no one was hurt. We have had some crazy weather . And we are only 8 days in. The year is just getting started . Best wishes my friend.
Yes i'm sure it was for the students living there and of course the shop and hotel owners alike. More stormy weather predicted for this weekend. Luckily i'm living more inland and on high ground. All the best mate.

Thanks for looking in Paul, This is just one seaside town along the coast that suffered extensive damage but managed to capture most of the damage at this one.

Yes its a nice place and this damage will certainly put this seaside town on stop for a long time. I'm living 40 miles from here and just had to share the destruction of the promenade. More bad weather is on the books for us. Fingers crossed and hope it wont be as bad. All the best.

good video mate. the start was not low tide, that is the normal high tide height, then we had the super high tide with the storms. at high tide normally the water does not come on to prom by the pier, and only the last step of the wooden jetty is in the water. and thats only the support posts. good coverige thou. thanks from aberystwyth.

Luckily I'm living on high ground but very unfortunate for those on the seafront.
I'm actually living 40 miles away from this seaside town but had to record the devastation and share with those who are unable to visit this lovely tourist town. We are in for more bad weather and now predicting some of that Siberian cold weather as well so the clean up and repairs to the promenade will be delayed. Thanks for watching Drew. LOL i had to grin watching the man depositing some litter in the litter bin. Its unimaginable how much power the waves have and these images and video was taken at low tide. Must have been quite frightening for the students living in those flats facing the sea as it slowly eats away at the promenade. Thanks for watching Freddie.

We certainly are and have predicted more stormy weather for the coming weekend again. I feel sorry for anyone living near the sea or land liable to flooding. Flooding can be so distressing. The cost of repair could mount to millions just at this location alone. Take care mate.

Your right there Thomas. The wall was approximate 20 feet and still i got a soaking from the waves so i moved on lol. the amount of shingle washed up on the promenade is tremendous and will take a long time to clear before restoration can begin. Weekend promises more bad weather so we can expect even more damage along the coast and inland. Luckily i'm living on high ground and less chance of being flooded out unlike thousands of homes, farms land and shops that have been washed out. Nature can be a right bitch sometimes wouldn't you say. Take care Thomas and be safe.
i think there was a tyfoon or cyclone or hurricane in irland close to uk thery
its a crying shame the money that will cost to put right.i suppose theyll be the last on the list being up north.hope not to many people were injured all the best mick.we have our caravan on angelsey.i might have a ride down in a few days
Hi Mick, the damage to the promenade will probably cost millions and many years to repair. Its a great shame as Aberystwyth is a very popular tourist town.

Seems like Aberystwyth took the full force of Neptune's wrath. That was a beautiful promenade before last weekend. Hope they will find the necessary funds to pay for the repair works before the summer.
Yes your right it was and will be restored but at tremendous cost i would imagine. The force of the waves lifted large stones and slabs of concrete even snapped iron railings and threw them around like matchsticks. The flooding of hotels and shops will certainly put a hold on things for a while. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best.
